They still exist in parts of Asia and Africa and perhaps a few other places in the world that are less civilized.

You really get something for your money when you take a cruise there. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

But sadly they dont have hook hands and exotic birds on their shoulders.

And for sure they dont have a chest hidden on an island somewhere. Or..... maybe they have one ? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

I was just thinking that they should have q-cruseships and some u-boats there. Imagen a current german type 212 vs a couple of pirate ships.

Try to traverse Malacca Straits, or stay at anchor outside a Brazilian or African port and come to report back to me sailor. I was about to loose my life as a watch officer outside Lagos, Nigeria once (from a boarding attempt) and I'm happy I can tell it now.

We'll soon be seeing cruise ships with deck guns mounted fore and aft!

How I hate those! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

Good news!

You don't have to sink them.

I guess they have to mount some high tech guns with autoranging, they could even throw together a competition who sinks the pirates first gets a stack of poker chips worth 50000 and free drinks in the bar....

...and let the passengers form teams and take turns on the guns. Instead of playing bridge on the deck.. five rounds each!

I'd like to see the NRA hire a cruise ship and sail through one of those pirate lanes. That would be really interesting to see on video.

I swear I was thinking the same thing before I read your last post.
They could double the fee and still fill the ship. They could have bench rest matches and 3 gun shoots. They could travel all the pirated areas.
Sounds like good times.

Now that would be something to watch... an irregular auxiliary cruiser (I wouldn't go so far as calling it a merchant raider). A nice throwback to the 1800s.

Juicy cruiseship with enginetrouble... sitting duck, until of course 2000 armed men pop up at the railing, out of portholes and ramps.

I'd love to see the looks on their faces. It would be like the scene in "Taps" when the bureaucrats came to close the academy and suddenly something like 50 M-16's are locked and loaded simultaneously and pointed down at them.

Most likely it would be more like the deathscene in SHIII... "What the he**..." *Game Over*

back in the early 80's while in the corps stationed in the phillipines this was a common thing and still is in some areas of the china seas there are some shipping companys that use {private naval armed guard's}...{the moneys good } http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

Yup , piracy is all crazy, another reason to pack heat on the boat. I read that its not bad in South America as it is around Borneo and those islands, at least theyre more likely to hit you at anchor , unlike the Borneo area where theyll raid your ride while youre underway. Anyone know if they have weapon lockers on board cruise ships? I think i would find it pretty humorous to drop those big nice marine deepcycle batteries ontop of them while theyre trying to climb up the side.

Cruise companies would do good to schedule a few NRA conventions on board.

"Alright, everybody, target pratice off the port bow"

You could market it by telling the NRA members that they we get a chance to fire "exotic" weapons...Like the Quad 20mm, or the five inch quick fire Naval gun, or for a special price, get behind the computer on the Phalanx.

The cruise line industry announces new standards in total pirate defense. As depicted here, deckguns are now standard for second class decks and above. See your steward or ask the cruise director for instructions on use and for firing a few practice shells once clear of port.

Come on... the pirates would never attack anything that was obviously armed to the teeth. Only hidden and small arms would be useable.

I'm still seeing that phalanx of bullets as 2000 excited NRA members open fire... Talk about a broadside.

By the way :

Piracy was also used in WW-2. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Look here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_auxiliary_cruiser_Atlantis)

For an example the Atlantis raided a british ship and collected secret information about british troops in Singapore.

- Radio cypher codes
- Troop power
- location of military installations

simply everything http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

These were given to Japan that later used the information to overun Singapore.

You all missing the point here. We are talking about pirates who boarding MERCHANT vessels, not that fancy, X-mas tree lighted floating hotels. Those (hotels) rarely "visit" waterways where the bove mentioned "gents" operate.
And btw... Soviet era merchant vessels was ARMED with machine guns on deck. So, they had zero pirating actions on them. I don't know if they still do the sport.

Edit: what a cruise liner do at Somalia? Re-acting "Black Hawk Down"? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

It was about a hundred miles off the coast. I don't think Somalia was on the itinerary, just sailing by. There is talk that they must have come from a cargo vessel that was nearby, as their boats were too small to likely have sailed out that far from Somalia. I also haven't heard yet whether the would-be pirates were Somalis.

Just another satisfied customer those fellas in the lifeboat with RPG's and guns. I think the captain threw them overboard after they caused too much a drunken ruccis among the cabins. -joke- http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

On the serious side now, I would, if I were captain, just run them over if they were dumb enough to be aft or bow of my ship. AHEAD FULL!
http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Those People dont learn. If you RPG them from the deck, they scatter. Then it will never happen again. It doesnt take much to pack a few martials aboard. But of course we know that they wont. everything is money. If they werent so cheap to higher a few guards this wouldnt ever happen. The reason why the little lifeboat full of malitia pirates were so bold as to attempt such a take-over is because free people can be read like a book. They do the opposite of what the genevia convention tells us what not to do to the enemy time and time again and uses that against us. They are not even uniformed soldiers. It doesnt take much to get rid of that problem. Have a flaming liquor bottle anyone? Drop one of those babys into that boat will send them flaming home. Would teach them a lesson. someone has to! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

Well taskforce, the pirates tend to attack at night, at least in Asia. They aren't very detectable, even if you have guards posted. And if they get aboard and there are guards shooting you **** well know that they will not stop. They have gotten this far, a few armed guards aren't going to stop them from taking passengers hostage and perhaps even excuting them to make the guards stop.

In all honesty, the ships need to sail at good speed and simply be very hard to scale. Then they can perhaps get close under the cover of darkness, but won't be able to get aboard, and everybody will be blissfully unaware.
Better yet, just don't sail with cruise liners near pirate infested areas, it isn't as if they are the most lovely waters already.
