View Full Version : Attacking 18 HE111s.... Not easy...

Winter. The war`s become a bitter fight over a small bit of land- Stalingrad. Everything seems to be in this stretch of city, destruction, war, death - Flak, lots of it!

Any our squad was reduced to just 3 aircraft since Jerry Aces have been chipping away at us. We were flying cap when we came across a 18 He111s in flight, being escorted by 2 109s.

My Leader and his Winghman got caught up fighting the 109s so i went for the bombers. I flew high above them and prepared to dive. Whoa! My plane was knocked by so many bullet hits to the fuselage! I backed off wide to the right and quickly dived, raking the lead bomber, but again, taking hits from the porcupine like hits from all the bombers.

I attacked from below, then above, petrified I was going to be pilot killed, waggling my rudder to put the gunner`s off. I smoked the leader in one engine, but that was it. One other He111 had gone down due to a lucky flak hit, but the rest had dropped bombs and were away. I kept attacking and eventually, they jammed my guns. But no damage elsewhere, though I know I was hit a lot. Lucky me.

My wingmen were no where to be seen, neither were the 109s. I radioded base for their location. I headed back.

I was given permission to land and arrived on landing approach. throttle back, flaps down, gears down... gears down? Gears not responding! I aborted to fly around. Started hand-pedalling and the gears slowly came down. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I Shift-F2 about to see how my aircraft was - looked ok.

Then I had a look at the mass of bombers I`d seen and spotted the leader, approaching landing. His left engine had quit, but he made a good landing on the runway, if a little fast - bah!

But then I noticed he wasn`t stopping, he just kept rolling at full speed on the runway - his right engine was on a runaway! Classic. He rolled on off the runway, took off slightly, hit the ground, rolled on about what seemed like half a mile until he hit the first trees of a small city. LOL.

Quite an interesting mission in which I have had to re-evaluate my impressions on the basic sim...

1. Gunners are way too accurate. 18 He111s present a wall of fire that`s nigh impenetratable. Now I used DCG that enables this, so those on DCG probably won`t notice since usually there`re less bombers... Maybe gunners are made more accurate to make up for low numbers compared to R\L?

2. With the Tower giving quite accurate vectors to target and home, one can actually fly IL2 without the need for the player plane on the map icon.

3. He111`s AI engine`s can runaway out of control. Nice.

Just my 2p.

Its not just DCG, DGEN will do it too! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif With the DGEN settings on high aircraft density, you can have a whole mess of AC up in a mission.

I started a new Russian campaign (Amagi's Disaster on the Frontiers) and took it almost completely full real, except external views (I like taking screenshots).

My very first mission was two flights of German bombers, 111's and Ju-88's hitting our base, heavily escorted by 109's and CR-42's. There were so many aircraft up that target identification was really a problem. And by the time you lined up on something, somone else bounced you. After shaking some pesky 42's, I drove in on a flight of 111's and ran smack into a wall of VERY accurate MG fire. The promptly potted me in the engine, and my speed and HP dropped immediately as the plane began pouring smoke. The smoke in turn seemed to draw every fighter in the area. My poor little Mig-3 got creamed almost instantly in a 3 ship 109 drive by. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif I managed to survive and bailout....

Mission 2 was an almost textbook repeat of Mission 1, except this time I managed to take out a 109 on a head on pass (definately a golden BB kill) and I grabbed alt quickly. Spotting a flight of 111's, I climbed to their 9 and dove in on them, hitting the leader roughly at his 10. Pass went great, sent both his engines smoking and opened up his fuel tanks, and even managed to kill a gunner. Then on the roll out, I swear every single 111 managed to shoot me at least three times as I exited at high speed. In a repeat of mission 1, I was bailing out as my Mig brewed up. The smoker eventually went down, but I was on the ground by then.

Mission #3 was an intercept, and once again, I managed to get flamed by the bombers. Once again, I got one good pass and sent a Ju-88 to the ground, but my "safe" exit strategy went out the window when all the remaining AC suddenly banked and I found myself staring at about 11 7.92mg's. Once again, smoking engine and I was heavily wounded.

As a whole, our squadron had lost so many AC and so many pilots were killed or wounded, that they disbanded the squadron and sent the surviors to the hospital or the reserve pool! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Bombers are definatly a hazard, particuarly early on!

I presume you have selected massed bombers in DCG.

The mass bomber option in DCG really can cause you hastles if you are not careful .. both in fps (mass bombers combined with forced ground starts bring my system to a halt) and also logistically.

Bear in mind that DCG is generating a mission that is hopefully balanced and then with mass bombers "any heavy/medium bomber unit will spawn with up to four flights regardless of the number of default flights selected." in otherwords you have suddenly increased teh difficulty of the generated mission substantially.

Perhaps if you have the mass bomber option selected you might want to set the bomber AI in DCG to default at "average" or alternatively modify the missions to have some extra support flights on your side.

As for the tower vectors .. with a printed map the two vectors will give you a precise position .. combine that with the rule of thumb that one 10km IL2 map square takes 2 minutes to cross at 300 kph and you can navigate quite well with map icons off.

That's what I've heard about the gunners. Instead of shooting more, with less accuracy, they shoot less... with a lot more accuracy. Sucks, huh?

If there are more than 4 bombers, either stay above 700km/h (with me-163, I can zoom amongst 20+ b-17s with impunity), or just be incredibly patient. Keep looping around for headon attacks.

There's an ingame map with plane icons? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Nice going there S.F. I definately feel your pain. I'm on the other side of the world, figuratively, trying to bring down Bettys with 7.62 MM pop guns in my Hurricane. Squad started out "alright" but it's gettin' mighty lonely in the Officers Mess I tell you. How different this sim would be if we had to play on "OLTL" "One Life to Live" mode.

If you lost your life, in any manner you couldn't just play the mission over again you had to start all over again. Imagine working your way up from an I-16 to a decent crate via grit, determination and luck, only to be PKed by some "Annie Oakley" in a Heinkel. Pheh...
