Too bad that we don't have any flyable French planes.
The Morane really could be usefull in many settings.
France - Finland - and in the dessert settings aswell.

Apparantly the Morane was twichier than the 109 (according to the Finns). Wonder how the Dewoitine was in comparison.

You'd never get me flying a Morane; the guns were notorious for packing up at the most crucial times, in most cases the cannon wouldn't work at all!

THe early Hispanos in Morane were considered extremely unreliable by Finnish pilots and ground crew, that is why they often changed it to russian UBS, or sometimes even to M-2 brownings.. i've heard about fitting MG151/20 in the hub as well..

Actually the people who flew the most time on French planes during the war (namely the Devoitine) are the Bulgarian Air Force. They intercepted Liberators flying from Africa to bomb the Ploesti oil in Rumania. The Germans shipped most (captured) Devoitines to Bulgaria after 1941.

I did read a test flight report made at the time which said in the air it was a fine handling aircraft but it had poor take off, landing and taxiing characteristics. I seem to remember that it saying the rudder was not effective until the aircaft was travelling level, also the view out on the ground was restricted. This caused accidents.
The French made some very ugly and some very pretty aircraft before the war, hopefully we will see some in an addon to BoB.

Nice website! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The Dewoitine D.520 was without doubt the best fighter in the French air force in 1940. Apparently it was a bit nervous and had less engine than the Emil, but it had better performance at high altitude and it could easily outdive it. Remember also that Molders was shot down by one of these.

From what I understand, the D.520 was the French equivalent of the Spitfire and given time and development like the Spitfire did...would have emerged as another top fighter aircraft of WWII.

What if...what if.

The D.520 saw plenty of action. The Vichy French used it against the RAF in the Syrian campaign, the Bulgarians used it against USAAF bomber raids and even the Italians used it for home defense.

Blimey. Didn't know the Arsenal VG was that good. Thanks for the link, Gozr. Shame that barely 10 were finished by the time of the German invasion. I'm just reading that more than 700 had been ordered...

It surely looks the part.

http://www.haddock.f2s.com/il2/forums/Arsenal_vg_36_39.jpg

And some stats I've found on the same book:

Arsenal VG33
- Max Speed: 558 Km/h at 5200 m
- Range: 1200 Km
- Max Alt: 10900 m
- 1x 20mm Hispano Suiza Cannon + 4x 7,5mm Mac MGs.

Dewoitine D.520
- Max Speed: 529 Km/h at 4000 m
- Range: 998 Km
- Max Alt: 11000 m
- 1x 20mm Hispano Suiza Cannon + 2x 7,5mm Mac MGs.

No, as HK said, everyone is waiting to have boB requirements on level of 3D modelling. Without the details of how the 3D models are to be made, nothing can be done, except gathering infos, and honing skills.

So, everyone is waiting http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Bulgarian Dewoitine D.520

In 1942 Bulgarian Government was ordered from Germany 20 units of the captured in 1940 french fighters Mourane Solnier MS.406, but later their delibering was canceled at Dewoitine D.520 expense, wich was more capable fighter than MS.406.

To the Royal Bulgarian Airforce 96 units (from 120 ordered) of the captured from germans in France Dewoitine D.520 was suplied in late summer of 1943.

Initialy, this plane was not favorite of bulgarian pilots - there was a several crashes in the beginning of its using. But in 1944 with D.520 was achieved more victories against american bombers ant theyr fighter escort than with famous Messershmitt Me 109 G which was the multiply fighter in RBAF during the WW II.

At the end of the war most of bulgarian Dewoitine D.520 was used like escort of Bulgarian bombers Dornier Do 17 and Avia B.71 in theyr missions against germans in Macedonia.

Looking at the cockpit layout, it seems that the instruments on the lower center of the panel are important ones. I hope that I can see how much fuel I have left or what the oil and radiator temperatures are without having to move the stick to either side for a quick look! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
