A driver ditched a 737 fuselage in the middle of a city street after he got lost and flipped his wig. Days later...it's still there.

In further developments, 500 Pakhis boarded it, thinking it was a train. The fuselage tipped over and 270 were killed and another 117 are missing.

Besides the obvious: use of a common appelation for the purpose of belittlement and ridicule? Jeez, I dunno, what could be wrong with use of that term, which is historically a racial slur?? Heck, the Irish love being Micks and Paddies, the French love being called Frogs, and the Brits are so in love with the term Limey that they buy limes all the flippin time, right?

Advice: don't plan a trip to Nigeria using your brand of logic http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif use your head, man!

btw, in canada, paki is used by all ppl

its just a shortening of pakistani

i used to drive taxi...LOTS of indians and pakis...both of them called pakis..well, pakis...

it all depends on the context

one who is ignorant and scared says it with a certain tone, in certain situations...
thats when it becomes derogatory to the individual

the pen or the sword? either need a hand to wield it

I don't think a single Englishman blinks an eyelid when the term Limey is thrown around these boards.

but then.. we love to be hated. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Besides I don't see how a contraction of a word can be offensive... it's only offensive if you wish it so.

But that is for another forum.

Walking up to a Japanese person and calling them a "Jap" is equivelent to walking up to a Black person and calling them a "Ni**er". Neither is good, and will likely result in the offender getting knocked out.

Morever, being a mix of several Caucasian races and receiving slurs from another Caucasian isn't quite the same as being of African, Indian, or any other distinctly "dark" and ethnic people and recieving slurs from a Caucasian. Particularly those from a group of people who have historically colonized, dominated, and in many cases, inslaved the same people that they now deliver slurs to, and in the same breath accuse them as being "oversensitive".

Even though I myself have never enslaved anyone, I grovel in apology to the millions and millions of dark-skinned peoples of the world who have been offended by me. Believe me, I do not want to run afoul of this community and our wonderful mods by a hurtful joke on my part.

Please forgive me. Oh my God, now I feel like Michael Richards. I need to go back to my Guadalcanal missions to relax. I am flying an American Imperialist Wildcat against the Betty bombers of the people's Imperial Japanese Army of Liberation.

Hi all,

We Brits are called 'Poms' in Australia. I've been over there a couple of times and been called a 'Pom' during friendly conversations.

For instance...I was having a few beers with a local guy and he remarked that I was a typical Pom as I was not wearing a jacket in their winter season whereas all Australians were wrapped up.

I take no offence but it's regarded by the PC Brigade in Australia to be offensive to Brits http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

And what does 'Pom' stand for??

'Limey' relates to the Royal Navy issue of lime-juice to counter scurvy. What did the US Navy issue http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I have to agree with Breeze & Avro here.

It all boils down to "intent".

It don't bother me to be referred to as a hick or redneck, so long as it's not "intended" as a slur. I've had many friends of various ethnicity's & all but one or two felt the same way.

What does bother me, is when the hyper-sensitive PC types try to press upon me "their" idea of what I or anyone else should be ok with based on their own insecurities.

Treetop64

I totally agree with you on the intent point. The problem is when the intent is to cause hurtful feelings when using the slur (and it often is used that way against some).

I grew up in the midwestern United States for the most part, and I was the one non-white kid living in an affluent white neighborhood and going to an all-white school. I was ganged up on and had racially driven comments and practical jokes played on me on almost a weekly basis while at school. More than once our home was vandalized with toilet paper in the trees and spray paint with messages like "Go Home, Ni__er!" sprayed on our garage doors. Had to put up with that **** for years. Years. There's more that happened, but you get the point.

Now tell me, what was the "intent" of that?

Imagine the difficulty a teenager has in maintaining quiet dignity in the face of that.

These occurances are still common in this country today, more in some parts than others.

The funny part is that I don't even look totally Black, (My dad was African-American, my mom was German/Italian mix)but the fact that I don't look white either was enough to bring that on. Obviously, my dad had to suffer the same stuff, too.

Those sorts of experiences makes one "hypersensitive", if you will, so excuse me if I came off that way. I know no one here means it in that way, and I don't mean to imply that they do. But when some people react in what is percieved by others as hypersensitive, then usually there is a reason for it. So, when we hear of racial slurs being spoken about so casually and treated as though it's no big deal, well, it is a big deal to some.

I'm not even thinking of pressing upon or imposing what you should think or say on the matter. I have no right for that. I'm not so naive to think this is a problem that will ever go away, because it will never. If you think I'm just shoveling sh*t, well then I'm sorry you feel that way. I'm just making an attempt on exposing a different perspective on the subject, and hopefully create some understanding, that's all.

Also herd that from some very nice hispanic guys when i got lost and got off the freeway in Echo Park. At 2 am on a sat morning. not the right place for a "Cracker" with a southern accent to get lost. i was way outa bounds. (truth be know i got out of bounds the min. i crossed the Texas N.Mexico state lines)

My point is this. no matter how much we try and hope for change ppl are still going to use dergotory terms for ppl of other ethnic back graounds. period. and ppl will be offened by it. it is all part of the politically correct world we live in today.
However there is no justification for the use of these words once the person learns that they are offensive.

I feel bad now becuse i thought it WAS funny. and i honstely didnt know where the cash was or what natio0nality/race/creed/religion those ppl are. i read the word "Pakhis" and honstly thought it was plural for the ppl from a certian country. as in American. Now i'm not stupid in the least bit, but just ill informed.
