View Full Version : The original "Butcher Bird"

12-10-2005, 09:23 AM

Predatory songbird found in most parts of the world except Australia and South America. The plumage of the European and North American species is mostly gray, black, and white; the tail is long and rounded, and the wings are rather short. Some African species are brilliantly colored.

The name butcher bird reflects its habit of impaling its prey‚‚ā¨"small birds and mammals and large insects‚‚ā¨"on a thorn or sharp twig before tearing it apart with its strong, tip-hooked beak.

North American shrikes include the loggerhead, great gray or northern, and California shrikes.

I'm no bird watcher but I haven't seen a Shrike in North America for 25 years. They must be headed the same way as the Ivory billed Wood******.....

Not common in the UK either - I've only ever seen one in my life.

We are supposed to have the Great Grey (Lanius excubitor) and the Red-backed (Lanius collurio).

I've seen quite a few in the parks here in South Dakota.its name just makes me think of the missles used by Wild Weasel crews during 'Nam to take out radars. On a couple occasions I've seen these little rascals "dog-fighting" other birds, but was never aware that it might actually be hunting them http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Up until quite recently, maybe 30-40 years ago, country hedges were 'laid' (yeah yeah, ha ha) by the old method of half cutting the main stems with a bill-hook, before laying them nearly flat. The excess was cut and burnt, sure, but the process was far more natural than the replacement - the tractor-mounted flail.

Nowadays a swathe as deep as 4 feet (1m +) is just munched off the top and sides, including shrikes' larders, and anything else that gets in the way. Just more 'f*** the planet as long as we don't scratch our shiny aoutomobiles' syndrome. Sad.

Shrikes are cool. Wasn't there a brit plane that was supposed to be named Shrike? That would have been funny. lol

The baddest avian hunters around though are Owls. Those things are killing machines. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif
