View Full Version : Can Dust Be an optional item?

Is it possible to have the dust at taxi and take off an item that can be turned on or off like skins? I have a minimal system and it's replacement is is a ways off. When I fly w/ many others and take off together my screen goes to a crawl from about 20 frames to 9. I have tweaked all I can but I still avg 20-25 frames (w/ no cockpit lose 5 if I use it) when the screen isn't full. Add fog to dust with the above and I have a slide show. It was said that it would not affect the game but it does mine.

I wonder if thery can be lightened and removed from concrete airbases.
Smoke effects causes fps drop on short distances.

Good point, now really fair to folks with average systems.

At the start of WW2 the German army lacked experienced anti-aircraft gunners. The average gunner was so bad that the USSR decided to help them out. They did it by forcing some of their pilots to fly I-153 flak magnets. These planes were slow but very sturdy. This allowed German anti-aircraft gunners to get a large amount of target practice on a relatively small number of planes. Thanks to the Soviets help, by the end of the war the German anti-aircraft gunners were amoung the best in the world.</center>

while it looks very very cool is it not friendly for AA and AF on nvidia cards, and you can no long creep up inches off the ground becuase they can see the dust from 9000m http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have a 2 year old GeForce3 and don't have any fps problems with the dust. I also like it as it tends to show up anyone on an airfield when I am strafing or dive-bombing. Normally I cannot identify anything without doing a low pass first.
However, if people are having fps problems with it then optional would be ok. I turn off the clouds for plane intensive missions for the same reason.
The more options the better.
Cheers!

Yes. I agree it seems unnescessary and an option would be good for lower users. I`ve never seen such dust except on the North African front and snows of the Eastern front. It`s nice , but I feel it`s a little OTT.

Well, I'm going to play Devil's Advocate and say why making it an option, at least at the individual level, would be a bad idea.

Being able to go inches off the ground undetected is no longer possible because of dust. If one user can turn it off or on, it gives them an advantage/disadvantage on the individual level. Making it an option for an entire server would be fine, but individually, I disagree.

For servers it would be at the host's discretion, like all of the other settings. I think that these guys are getting fps hits offline, which is where the individual choice needs to be allowed.
Another reason I like the dust is I can see when the a/c in fromt of me on the runway begins his takeoff, without having to swing hard to one side to look. (offline again, and no externals).
Cheers!

Dust is smooth as silk on integrated motherboard SiS video chipset (don't ask how I know this I am not saying /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif ).

You know...think of how lots of contrails do NOT hit fps (for me anyway). Maybe there could be something from the contrail grafix they can use for the dust. Dust Rules!

yes about nvidea cards have problems with the dust,
Im my system (a p4-2.6,1 gig ram and a ti4600) i would get slow downs in FPS when i start the engine and then the dust was introduced and it made it whorse.

but i changed the video card to an ATI 9800pro and oh my God, it proceses those effects like nothing.

now i can start the engine while being in a cloud of dust from the plane in front of me BOTH AT THE SAME TIME and my frame rates doesnt show any slow down.

thats more evidence the the ATI card is a way more superior card than the GEforce4

BTW, what's with this... smooth as silk... I have a 9800 Pro... ATI is supperior.

D'oh! Really. A 9800 Pro is better than a Ti4200? Wow. I learned something.

Sniper explained pretty clearly that he has a minimal system, even posting specs. What? You want to make hem feel worse? (Before 'you' go 'there', it was obvious I was kidding with him.)

Sniper, are you talking about online or off? Either way, if you play online on servers that allow no-cockpit, at least use no-cockpit while taking off. (Or, do you use no-cockpit all the time.)

Make sure your system is 'tuned' up. Have you? If not, do a Google on system performance. Maybe you want to post your FB settings to see if they can be optimized. (Not saying you do not know what you are doing, but if you are not sure, then post.)

What sources have you used to tweak FB?

no cockpit all the time. And online only. give 12 plane coop+dust+plus alot of eye candy= screen shots. Mountain map can be a problem too. simple Df maps and 12 ppl are ok but a little jerky.

Best i can do is everthing medium but objects, open GL
havn't tried over clocking yet and have done some of HawgDawg's recomendations. Havn't figgered out the reva tuner yet but have a link to a beginners site.

That damn dust is a tactics killer. Though the game's called [/b]Il-2 Sturmovik<b/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif Forgotten Battles. Those planes have to fly low NOT to be seen so easily. And now you can see them at glace 5km away because of these dust trails... And sometimes one hast to fly as low as 10m AGL. Really bad...

I'm in just to say that, while I truly love the effect, I think it should be set in the conf.ini, and toned down over grass and concrete, besides when it's raining. When raining, on concrete it should be white, as it is now over water and snow.

I love it any though.
