Last year I picked up a copy of SHII and installed al the third party add ons. It stopped me playing FB for three whole weeks! Yes, I will be getting SHIII.

If the pre-release hype is anything to go by this will be a far better game than SH2 which I enjoyed. I'll be getting it, though likely not in the first mad rush, I'll wait a month or two.

Been waiting a LONG time for this game. Had the original Silent Hunter and spent hours upon hours playing it. When it comes out, 1st QTR 95 by all accounts, I will probably be locked on to that game and will most probably have forgotten the battles of the skies for a bit. I plan to roam the pacific, fight, er, battle my way through destroyer escorts.

And the graphics do look awesome.

I didn't even know about this game until I saw the ad in the Pacific Fighters manual. Not sure if I would like it though.... sub sim seems to be boring. Am I wrong?

It's the immersion factor bro. It's not a quick paced shoot-em up. Stalking the convoy or lone freighter, getting into position without getting spotted, calculating the torpedo data, launching the fish, and sweating out the imminent retaliation are but a few of the pros for me. There's also surface battles, air attacks, navigation, boat maintenance, etc. Again, it's for those times you really want to get immersed in a role.

I have never played any of the Silent Hunter series, but this one does have me exited... I am eagerly awaiting it, both for its graphics and promised realism...

I'll get it when the time comes. I'm sure the snotty kid at EB-Games will look at me like I've been hitting the glass pipe when I ask for it, but I'll get the game just the same!

Wouldn't it be great to work a way to play it along with PF ACE combo? I've heard those who say it would be too easy for the planes to get the kills, but somehow, I don't think so!

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gifThe weather affects of SH3 would a Great add-on for IL-2/PF.
Did anyone catch the Rough Weather Video of SH3... it reminded me of my Navy day's.
Also coming up is the Knights of the Sea... PT Boat game. Which is getting help from some of the IL-2 Team. And is coming along Fine. Check out the Demo video's on KotS Forum page.

just watch the movie 'das boot' and you'll be in love with a uboat http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ok, its not for everyone, but i must admit after watching that movie.. i've been buying every sub sim that came out since. its about hunter instincts.. whether u r a fighter pilot or a uboat captain.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif Have you checked out the Rough Weather Screen Shot's of KotS Tully? Wow!
Both the SH3 & KotS are going to be First Class in the Weather Graphic's.
I'm still amazed at the SH3 video with the U-Boat going through Heavy Sea's. It looks as real as it gets.

I've looked at vids for both products. I also picked up Destroyer Command recently out of the bargain bin (AUD$10 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) and I'll be giving that a shot over the holidays. I had to retro-fit suitable drivers for it but it's looking like it could be fun http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

Rome Total War is another that can draw you away, if accurate tactical modelled and detailed phalanx's and legions are your sort of thing. Kept me at it on near a month and I still use it every week for a change of pace.

SH3, ahh yes, been waiting for this one. Its a rare game in that for almost every question put to the developer, the answer is YES. The detail going into this game is astounding, there are so many things that aren't a neccesity but are thrown in anyway. Here's a couple of examples from the homepage -

Q = "Will Silent Hunter 3 feature a MP3 player."
A = "Yes. In the €œRadio Room€ there will be a Gramophone implemented as an MP3 player."

Q = "8. Will the command bridge and the other rooms tilt in the case of diving, impact, battle or storm?"

A = "Obviously, we have paid attention to all those details that should convince the player that his boat is out on the ocean. Expect to see provisions (ham and sausage strings) hanging from the ceiling and moving like crazy during storms."

How cool is this! Can't wait.

Take a look at the preview over at Subsim.com (seems to have server problems at the moment though)

Being an exsubmariner myself, I can hardly wait. Ever since I started playing SH2 and heard about the development of SH3, I've been anticipating the release of this game. There is a certain thrill involved in hunting ones prey. My blood pressure invariable goes up and I become nervous trying to figure out where the destroyers next depth charges will drop, and how I can manage to get away from them. But still I'll probably be like Tully, and wait a few months before rushing out and getting it. Hey woofiedog, where did you serve in the navy?

I had Wolfpack back about 10 years ago, and it was fun to play on a Sunday. Sub Sims are about 2 hours of nothing and 10 minutes of action. I just got Silent Hunter II for about $6 last week. Still pretty much the same. But those 10 minutes are fun.

Edit: But after watching some of those video clips, action looks awesome. Silent Hunter II is just the basics as far as gameplay and views go. I can only get 640x480 resolution out of it.

Hi all,
For my sins I once played Janes 688i Los Angeles class sub sim for 14hrs straight (my offline record) Hunting a Russian sub for all that time, he eventually sunk me! Funny enough I am no longer married to the women I was at that time!! They have no sense of fun!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I miss Aces of the Deep badly...

I have SH2 and I think it's fairly good, but the campaign bugs me. I don't want to recreate historical missions in my campaign, I want to go around and see what i can do.

Those weather shots are very impressive! My one question that I didn't see asked is:

What card was used to make those trailers? Do I smell the 3.0 shaders only available on new Nvidia cards?

SHIII will be the AoD killer if they don't spoil it. Anything I heard, read and saw was totally positive. Great graphics (superb water without the need of a GF 6 series http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif ), great sound, great realism, great gameplay, great campagin system and great future plans (DC2, other sub additions, eventually even Pacific when it sells enough).
For comparison, SH2 had medium graphics, mediocre sounds, bad campaign (20 scripted missions, no replayability), quite some realism flaws, especially bad uber AI (you couldn't even hide somehow) when it came out. The later added multiplayer also was real pain in the *** as even 2 players on LAN were lagging http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. With many user mods, especially Projekt Messerwetzer Patch, it's quite good though. There's even a random mission generator called Kriegstanz. Netcode got better. But still there's the AI that makes destroyers see and hear you everywhere. Some graphical mockups are available, too. And a big sound pack ripped from "Das Boot". But technically the sound still sucks.
There are still ppl out there that play AoD sometimes... I've got it ready at least, haven't played it for some months now http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I just watched the vids and the effects are awesome. This will be a great sim.

HOWEVER...

All those cool effects like destroyer depth charge launches and the torpedo underwater shots will never be seen during realistic gameplay. It seems like such a waste. The topside weather effects will be great but you will spend most of the time below decks.

Also, I hope that you can have your crew speak German with subtitles.

I think what he means is that "Full switch" games wouldnt or shouldnt have external looks enabled for obvious reasons. Sub warfare is a game of patience and stealth.

You have to appeal to casual/novice players to make any real money and so you have to allow external cameras, in which case you have to animate depth charges, et al.

You hit it right on the head Fehler. If one is to play with any sort of attention to reality then one should never see a depth charge launch. Unless of course your were watching from afar through your periscope. Then surface vessel effects could be enjoyed. Your persuers would likely hear you though if you were close enough to see them drop charges through your periscope! Therefore it would be pretty rare (or suicidal) to actually see a charge barrage. You should be 300 ft or deeper at that moment.

And submerged torp viewing should be right out. Now if you could record your attacks for playback after the real time simulated action then all this makes sense. I think it would be pretty cool to watch a documentary of your success.

Also...

I wonder if you could get your crew to do that neat little string trick that submariners do. You know, the one where they run a string taught between the two walls of the sub on the surface then watch as the string slakens due to the walls being compressed inward at depth. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Well, IMHO it's a game, and it would be fun to be able to have all of those views if I wanted them. Like most sims, there should be some realisim settings.

Read "battle beneath the waves" by Robert C Stern

Subs in WWII weren't notoriously strong. Water is a great medium for the transmission of energy. An explosion that close would likely make any of the needed holes in the pressure hull (for hatches, head, torpedo tubes, radio equipment, periscopes, radar detection equipment, etc) fail, and that could be catastrophic. Also, the bolts inside the various pipe flanges would shear, and could cause wounds similar to a bullet wound. Add to that that even if your sub didn't sink, many crew could be seriosuly hurt by being slammed violenty into equipment or down a hatch, if a depth charge went off nearby.

"nearby" is a relative thing, but a dpeth charge needn't actually strike the sub to 'kill' it.

In excellent movies like "Das Boot" they show explosions quite near the sub that don't breach the pressure hull to deadly effect. that is a concession to telling the story.

Can't wait for SHIII

SH3 will be a simulation hit, the next step in the right direction, consequently spashing bugs and filling the gaps in SH2. I'm really looking forward to this game.

KotS will be nice too. I'm glad publisher and devs realized that you can program shoot-em-ups and silly games for consoles, but you simply don't have the resources to program a real sim on these and the customers of consoles probably wouldn't buy them anyway.

I hope this is a sign of times ahead, equal to those were Microprose and Janes battled for the best sims. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

Microprose...Wild Bill, where are you?!?!

Silent Service and Red Storm Rising hooked me on simulations. I would study the manual before I even loaded the game. When Dynamix took over the crown of 'best sim maker' in my book, the manuals were at least as much fun as the sim.

What ever happened to the Dynamix sims? Their 'Xplanes' was my first experience with vaporware

Aces of the Deep was pretty good in its time. Based on the German Type II, VII, IX & XXI boats. Much smaller then the US Gatto class boats, but could certainly dive a lot deeper and in faster time.
