What is the biggest convoy you have come across in the game so far ?

Mine came last night, directly West from Ireland, I came across a 22 ship convoy(incl, Destroyer) coming from America. I sank the Destroyer first time out, and it was hunting season. Sadly though, i ran outta ammo, and those star bursts just dont cut it as hard core ordinance. I managed to sink 69,000 tons. A mixture of T3 tankers & large cargo, along with a few small merchants.

I hadent come across convoys until 2 nights back, now they seem to pop up quite a bit. No wonder i am top U-Boat ace in my SP game. Started 1940, now half way through 1941, and sunk 300,000+ tons so far http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Yesterday on a mission, also around ireland, i spotted a large convoy whit over 20 ships.
i couldnt find any escort ships whit them.

But the worst thing was,, it was on the end of my patrol and i was about to head back to base and i had only 1 torp left :/

Only thing i could do was to dive down and wait and let them all pass me over my head.

nothing much i could do whit 1 torp left against 20+ ships http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Edit/ forgot to say that the date was around september 1941, was suprised to se a convoy at that early stage.

september 1941, EARLY? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

i already ran into convoys in early 1940, and probably would have done so in 1939 if i was in a Type VII near IReland and not in a Type II in the north sea.

Sept 1941 is late man!

I've been looking at the campaign file that's responsible for generating random elements. Out of the half dozen or so random convoy templates I found on the map, no convoy allowed for more than 22 ships, not counting escorts. This should be easily moddable, though.

Yeah - ran into one of these large, unescorted convoys north of Ireland on my second patrol last night (November 1939) - unusually calm seas, so i got to use my deck gun - managed to sink 12-13 ships for around 70,000 tons - finished off the last small merchant I could sink with star shells, cause that's all i had left (I think he would have sunk anyway, but I had forgotten to toggle particles back on from using my UZO so I couldn't tell he was already on fire)

BTW - anybody know what the secret is to firing star shells so they'll actually work right? No matter how high I elevate my deck gun (for increased range, you would think), the star shells always burst low and close, between me and the target ship, so they really don't help very much - great idea in theory but doesn't seem to work in practice http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I believe Star Shells were mainly used for lighting relatively close to yourself. So they seem to modelled correctly in game.

The light range is quite high to be honest!

I found the largest convoy (and the onlyone at the moment) tonight. October 1940(I think), first patrol of my second career(crash in the firstone whrn camimg back home, against the lighthouse, **** time compression http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ) North of Ireland, 18 merchant coming from America with a DD as escort. I sunk 2 and the DD sunk me http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif , but the pitty is that I had sunk 30 tons on my way to the patrol area, and now they are gone....

I came across a 40 ship convoy NW off Ireland. Sadly, the seas were so rough I didn't score too many hits.

Well, I've had less luck Googling this topic than I thought I would, but I don't think you are correct about the expected range of star shells - I haven't found anything definitive yet, and nothing at all yet about German submarine-fired star shells, BUT what reports I have found so far about US, Japanese and British/Australian naval star shells indicates that they were intended to be and were used to illuminate targets at normal gun ranges (out to 9,000 yards at least, from the reports I've seen so far), so barely being able to get them 1,000 meters out in SH-3 seems a bit under-modeled (to borrow a phrase I see all the time over on the IL-2/FB/PF forums) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I did find a couple of reports of star shell failures where both Japanese and American star shells occasionally fell short (basically obscuring the target/blinding the gunners, which is what is happening with mine in SH-3), so maybe the SH-3 devs have just modeled a high rate of "dud" star shells and I'll eventually get some that work

I ran into my first convoy in Sept 1939, on my first patrol. The largest I have seen so far is 20 ships plus escort(s). Thus far, I've only found one escort with a convoy, but I know that's going to change too.

There I was taking the shortcut?!? through the Irish Sea found a 20 ship no escort convoy near Liverpool.

Bad weather, planes, and some duds all equaled a total of two tankers and a couple c-2s limping along.

What I thought was pretty cool was the DD's and planes that arrived a couple hours after my inital contact.

can you explain where you found it, and how you openend it? have you tried moding it?
i desperetly want to increase convoy size, space between ships, and escort size. only one escort is just unrealisitc imho. also i would like to see asw trawlers removed from transatlantic escort duty. they where deffo not assigned to travel across the north atlantic.

The odd thing was, when you sink a few of them in a convoy, they dont seem in a hurry to get away http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif Best thing they do is enter zig zag movement.

I also agree with above, for a 22 ship convoy or whatever, surely there would had been more escorts(destroyers).

Also, with my 22 ship convoy 3 or 4 of them were conciderd neutral, as they were American ships. I suppose because they werent considerd enemies until after Pearl harbour. I still sink American ships though, even if it says neutral http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

The only convoy I have seen had no merchants in it whatsoever. It was only my second mission for Flotilla 1 in my IIB. 100% realism.

I had just reached my patrol area when I get a couple hydrophone contacts of warships. I set an intercept course and come upon them at almost the perfect angle.

The convoy consisted of 5 destroyers encircling 1 Dido Light Cruiser. Having only 1 torpedo left I decided to take the shot on the cruiser. I set it to magnetic pistol, 1 meter below the keel. Manual TDC and all that and my shot was good and sunk the thing. I was disapointed that the destroyers didn't try to find me after that but just kept the same course. Was a nice 5700t boost to my tonnage that mission.

best spots for convoy activity thus far in my experience have been in grids AL an AM and also the region close to gibraltar.

I am trying to ween myself off these starshells. In the Early years they seem useful when everyone is unarmed but later on they just seem to get a lot more attention and reveal your presence.

They might of left it at 22 ships for stability reasons but we won't know till we try it out. I know my computer started running a little sluggish when a ran into a 20 ship convoy with three escorts.
