Hi Allhttp://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
I stumbled onto something last night that I am recomending to anyone still owning a copy of CFS3. It is FREE, and creates an entirely new game using your CFS3 installation. It will not bother your original game. Let me repeat: It will do NOTHING at all to your CFS3 directory, except copy for the purpose of creating an entirely new game based on CFS3. There is also an updater that you would want to run after the installation. You will get new AC for the game, and a Korean map to play your Korea campaigns and missions. I am really enjoying this, and I am seeing now that CFS3 (after all this time!) has actually become fun!

Mods: My apology for the OT, but alot of us went out and bought CFS3, only to retire it eventually. I was out $110.00, because I bought a copy as a gift for a good mate (best friend/squad mate) for Christmas. If this can bring enjoyment to the disapointed members of our community, then it is well worth allowing the OT. The little jets are really fun, and is a nice distraction while awaiting the final patch(es?) for FB/PF.

The download is about 85 megs, and is well worth the wait. I hope that you enjoy it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hi,

I dunno - CFS3 looks less and less of a villain if for no other reason than no one is prepared to fix obvious bugs in CFS3, either.

I've been enjoying playing CFS3 with the Firepower and Battle of Britain add-ons, IL-2 still gets most of my time but I feel some of the ranting about CFS3 on here is a little unjustified.

Big Bear,

Let me know how you like it. Make sure that you read everything when you install. I dl'ed the expansion from simviation.com , and it included the patch in one zip file. The first time that you fly you must change the default base to anything else. After that, you never have to do it again. This will even create its own EXE, just like the CoD expansion. Very cool for a freebie! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

What a kick A$$ free expansion. Its like a whole new sim for free. The cockpits are friggin awesome too. It definitely seems to be a work in progress but since I only spent 10 minutes dowloading it I'm stoaked. The flight models don't seem to shabby either. I thought the Mig v. Sabre combat was fairly realistic and the number of free maps and planes is just great. I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in the Korean war era, like myself, and would like what amounts to a totally free sim.

Interesting. Glad you guys are getting something out of CFS3. I never bought it. Do you think this makes it worth buying it? How much is it now anyway?

I've always though CFS3 was worth the money. With the firepower addon it really is a great sim and this Korean War addon is one of the main reasons I like the game so much: I can fly just about anything I want and if I look hard enough I can find if for free. I don't know if I'd say this makes it worth buying all on its own but you could probably find CFS3 used for $15 then another $20 or so for firepower. I think there is a lot of good things in CFS3, and lets face it, if Il2 wasn't around, we'd all be playing it.

If you're confident that you won't have to go through the tweaking process, I'd say its worth reinstalling it. I think most newer systems don't have a problem installing and running CFS3 right out of the box, of course when it first came out that was a different story completely http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif.

This last point is very true although Il-2 has clearly shifted of late into the market space that CFS3 didn't fill. More sales but at the expense of realism and fairness, it would appear.

I think the main problem with moving from CFS3 to Il-2 and vice-versa is that they are very different animals. CFS3 does certain things better but Il-2 has the better all-round feel. Interestingly, Oleg said that the CFS team stole the damage modelling from Il-2; an unusual statement considering the damage modelling in CFS3 appearing to be so poor. Maybe we just think it's better than it actually is? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Totally agree, but between the firepower addon and the way PF has been going lately, the "feel" (as far as flight models are concerned) are becoming closer and closer to one another and I actually sort of like the gritier look of CFS3.

For online I'm all about PF, but for offline play CFS3 is slowly but surely becoming my favorite. I'm constantly looking for new version of planes, and I find the ones that have the best flight models (as far as I can tell) to make the sim as realistic as I want it to be. I just think the two compliment each other very well but CFS3 never got a chance because it was too hit or miss on computers at the time of its release and I don't know who allowed it to be released with those god aweful cockpits.

Hi,

I agree. When CFS3 came out, it was a nightmare to get running but now it seems a lot easier although I still have texture problems. FPS is just as good as Il-2 if not better even with all the eye candy on + lots of planes in the air.

The biggest bonus for CFS3, of course, is the add on planes which are now of a good quality and easily displace the poor originals.

The other interesting thing, of course, is that CFS3 would have been dismissed out of hand on this forum not so long ago but it now increasing appears to have more fans. Whether this is because CFS3 got better...or Il-2 got worse...is up to you. IMO, it's both.

Cheers,
Norris

Looks interesting. A question: Do I just install this straight over CFS3 (which hasn't been on my computer since the week after I bought it)? Or would I have to buy the "Firepower" addon and etc. to get the best out of it? In other words, is the Korea stuff affected positively or negatively by patches/addons which you have placed underneath it? Or is it its own sim, with good graphics/flight models etc. regardless?

Does it still make use of the dynamic campaign?

I only saw two Korean aircraft on the website. Is that all?

I noticed there are naval aircraft, but I don't suppose there's a working carrier?

Has the AI been improved? IIRC, you couldn't change difficulty level in the campaign so you got stuck with AI that were set on rookie level.

How are the encounters? Is it again 8 planes (your flight) vs. 4 or 3planes (enemy flight)? Can we encounter bombers now or is this once more non existant? (In CFS 3, the only way to fight bombers was to do a CAP or be very, very lucky with an intercept mission).

That's it for now. Thanks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

There is certainly damage, explosions, and other effects that I see that you won't without the Firepower addon. I really can't say one way or the other whether flight models are affected in any way but Firpower did do like a total revamp of the game when I installed it, even improved FPS. The models and the cockpits are all new and they looks great. I would say it would still be plenty worth the dowload with the stock version of CFS3. I've just been having a blast doing doghfights with the Sabre and the Mig. There's also the F-80 which flys a lot more how my grandfather used to always describe it, corsair, yak 9, a panther (cockpit, and I think the FM, aren't finished yet), F-51, Skyraider, and A-26 Havoc. Its really a lot of stuff for free when you throw in ground objects and maps and since I've been jonesing to fly some Korean war stuff for a while, I'm really excited about this.

IceShade-

I haven't tried the campaign at all and look at my last post for the list of aircraft. I haven't seen a carrier and I doubt there is one. The AI I have is the Firepower version of the AI.

It is for free though and once again the cockpits are awesome. For me this was great because I have CFS3 installed with Firepower, I like the game to begin with, I have broadband so the download only took ten minutes, and I really wanted to fly some Korean era planes.

OK thanks for the info...Sounds like Firepower will improve everything across the board, but if you don't get Firepower you have to go to 3.1a. I might give it a try (the Korea stuff does sound interesting). Thanks for pointing this out!

OK, let's face it. We all know, CFS3 dosen't compare to IL2. But I still feel it has it's place. Mabey that place for some is on the shelf, or even the garbage. For me, I admit, I still have a go at it from time to time, and since installing some of the mods from Netwings, as well as the Firepower add on, the game has become more bearable. There is a terrain graphics tweak over at Netwings, that really improves the looks of things. In addition, there are sound mods for the FW190, as well as the Me109, which greatly improves engine sounds. Like I said befor, Il2 is still the best out there. For realism, FM, Cockpit detail, and overall play, it's hard to beat. But I'm not ready to give up on CFS3 just yet. And I think this Korean add on, just renewed its' lease on life, for me at least.
