View Full Version : More FPS Tweaks - How to Get Around Dare Audio

Hi.

I just recently got this game and while I am only into CO-Op and SP play... I absolutely love it!

But, like many of you, I am experiencing low FPS in this game which seems to be a trend with all new Unreal Engine games being released.

However, as you may know, what makes this game different from other Unreal Engine games is that it uses a proprietary sound format called "Dare Audio" which seems to be a HUGE resource (CPU) hog.

Anyway, here is how to get Raven Shield to NOT use Dare and to use either the regular AL windows or DefOpenAL files and hopefully give you a boost in FPS. After I did the following steps, it gave me a boost in FPS that were averaging around 60 to now in the mid 100s depending on number of backup Rainbows and enemy Tangos in the map. Much more playable than the 30 or below that I was having.

1) This requires a file from the most recnet patched version of Unreal Tournament 2003 or a similar file:

DefOpenAL32.dll

2) Copy this file to your RavenShield\system directory

3) Rename it "OpenALAudio.dll"

4) Open up a text file with Notepad and paste the following (without the lines):

------------------------------------------------------------
[Public]
Object=(Name=OpenALAudio.OpenALAudioSubsystem,Clas s=Class,MetaClass=Engine.AudioSubsystem)
Preferences=(Caption="Audio",Parent="Advanced Options",Class=OpenALAudio.OpenALAudioSubsystem,Immediate= True)

[OpenALAudioSubsystem]
ClassCaption="DefOpenAL Audio for Windows"
------------------------------------------------------------

5) Save the text file as "OpenALAudio.int" using save as all format and NOT a text file.

6) Find your RavenShield.ini, DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES and make it "Read Only"* (Properties>Check Read Only box>Save).

*The reason you have to make your RavenShield.ini read only is because if you just set the audio render to "OpenALAudio" or something else it WON'T start. It must be hard coded that it has to use the DareAudio.dll to at least start. This is why you must then go into preferences each time and select the specific driver each time you start up (see step #7) because if you alter the driver and the RS.ini is not read only, it changes this value and RS won't even start.

7) Launch RS and then bring down the console, the "`" (tilde) key.

8) Type "preferences"

9) Select "Drivers"

10) Select DefOpenAL for Windows".

11) Close Preferences window

12) Make sure EAX and 3D Sound are UNCHCKED in your Audio Preferences menu

13) Play Raven Shield and hopefully, you should have slightly higher FPS.

You can also try the "ALAudio.dll" as well. Simply open up the ALAudio.int with Notepad and paste the following (without the lines):

------------------------------------------------------------
[Public]
Object=(Name=ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem,Class=Class, MetaClass=Engine.AudioSubsystem)
Preferences=(Caption="Audio",Parent="Advanced Options",Class=ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem,Immediate=True)

[ALAudioSubsystem]
ClassCaption="OpenAL for Windows"
------------------------------------------------------------

Then, just do Step #7, but select "OpenAL for Windows" instead of "DefOpenAL Audio for Windows".

Doing these little tweaks helped give me added FPS that make the game much more enjoyable without sacrificing any of the audio quality this game has.

In addition to these tweaks, you can also turn down your hardware acceleration to see if that gives you even more of a boost in FPS as has already been mentioned on these forums as well.

Just remember, this may or may not work for you depending on your sound card and system setup, but for those of you who have Creative Labs cards, this should definitely work.

Let me know if this helps or not because I am just curious to see if it makes any difference whatsoever on different systems.

You could also try this on Splinter Cell as well and see what effect it has (I haven't yet).

Now... The next challenge. Getting the game to run in OpenGL.. J/K... Or I am?

where do I get this UT2003 file?

XyZspineZyX

Actually, there should already be a similar file in your RavenShield\system directory:

DefOpenAL32.dll

The reason I said use the one from the latest patch of UT2K3 (patch 2199) is because it is a more recent version of the file.

Actually, now that I think about it, go to windows\system32 and look for this file there as well if you have a Creative Labs card and the latest driver.

You can tell if it is newer than the one that comes with RS if it is bigger than 144 KB and also by right-clicking on the file properties and looking at the version number.

Hope this helps.

Here is a picture that proves that doing this -- if you can get it to work -- Increases FPS.

http://home.attbi.com/~dmoudry/prison.jpg

Notice the 91 FPS in the right corner.

This wasn't even the high as it would go around 120-130. This with everything maxed at 1024x768, no AA, no AF and with LOD at 16.

I'm not trying to gloat, but doing this tweak gets results... At least for me... Until an official patch comes out that addresses the Dare Audio CPU drainage problem and other things.

Thanks, it's nice to see that someone is trying to fix the issues. The folks at Ubi must be busy waiting for sanctions to work.

i found the 144kb one in my postal 2 system directory. might try this tomorrow. you did turn off the 3d hardware acceleration though, this could explain some boost right? dave, you have mail if you want to try it out, post your results.

Ok after I get the advanced options to pop up I hit Audio and it says DXAudio.DXAudioSubsystem (failed load). Is this because I'm at the title screen? Is this normal?

Mr_NiceSTARS:

You want to hit DRIVERS -- not Audio -- That is a few levels down from Audio.

I did the same thing when experimenting.

What you are doing is forcing the game to use a DIFFERENT DRIVER than the default Dare one, thus freeing up CPU cycles that Dare somehow "hijacks" that cause low FPS.

Like I said, if you leave your RS.ini unlocked (not read-only) and then exit the game and look at it, it changes the audio render to whatever you choose instead of Dare Audio...

BUT like I also said, it must be hardcoded that RS can't start up unless you specify the Dare Audio in the audio render line because if you just leave it as AL Audio or something else, the game won't start and you get an error dialogue box upon start up.

In addition, this also should automatically disable 3D sound as well. If it doesn't, I'd do it as well.

The thing is, for me anyway, that I still get the 5.1 speaker sound using this -- as I should -- Since it is an AL format that 5.1 sound is based on.

If you need anymore help, let me know...

If you have a Creative Labs card, go to Windows\system32 and look for one there. It will be called "openAL32.dll".

If you don't have this file or a CL sound card...

You can also just do what I said above and use the "ALAudio.dll" that already exists in your RS\system directory (see steps above in my first post).

Or, if you have Unreal Tournament 2003, copy the "DefOpenAL32.dll" from that game's system directory to RS\system directory and use it.

Both methods work equally well, and in fact, I perfer the ALAudio.dll one to the DefOpenAL32 one myself (It sound better and gives better FPS).

There is no "ALAudio.dll" in RS/system. Only a file called "ALAudio.int"?

...found it. It's called "OpenAL32.dll".

You know how you type "preferences" in console you should get a menu with different settings to adjust. Do you know what allows you to do so? I've been trying to tweak the game so it would run smoothly, but in that Sound Tweak, I can't seem to get the Preferences menu up. The console freezes and I have to ctrl+alt+del to minimize RvS in order to have the console responding again without the menu ever popping up. Do you know where I can just change the settings in a file and not in that menu? or what file makes it able to come up?

Or Where can i make the changes on the driver settings in an .ini file or any file and not through "preferences"?

DaviDLaX12:

Once you launch RS, at the menu screen is when you should pull down the console, type preferences and set things to what you like.

This is the ONLY way to do my sound tweak as RS is somehow hard coded to only allow the game to start if Dare Audio is set in the ini file(s) for some strange reason.

Also, remember, you are adjusting the DRIVER section of the preferences and NOT the Audio one. DRIVER should be a few levels down.

However, as far as just ini tweaks, here is my RS.ini file in all its glory:

------------------------------------------------------------

The only real chanages I made that weren't stock are:

-Menu Resolutions same as Game Resoultion
-Cache size is set to 128 instead of original 32
-Changed my LOD (Level of Detail) to 16 from default 12 (decreasing to around 9 gives better performance but looks less detailed; XBox detail is 9)
-Internet/LAN speeds set to 2500
-Internet/LAN tick (update rates) set to 101
-I added a bunch of D3D parameters from UT2003 that may or may not have any effect as far as visual quality

You can also change the Dare.ini file parameters as well to be lower number of channels (16 instead of 32), lower frequency (11 KHz instead of default 41)... But this is independent of actually getting around Dare itself and using my tweak to avoid it all together.

I mean, yes I get around 120-130 FPS... But that drops when I add another team of Rainbows as well to around 75 FPS.

The thing to remember is that this game has a TON of AI going on for upto 8 Rainbows (on various teams), plus the Terrorist AI which is damn good.

MP should take care of the CPU having to process AI threads... But then the problem here is the crappy netcode UBI seems to be using more than anything and no FPS tweaks can help that.

Hey kungfu, after I do all that for the tweak, I get into raven shield and go to preferences. Then I go to drivers and audio...but the drop down menu only has dare audio. Is there some way you could contact me on Aim my sn is griev0r. I tried posting my probs but it just got deleted 2 min later... thanks buddy.

Great stuff there, seems like ALOT of stuff to try out...hopefully this'll fix my framerate troubles ...got fps like 10/15/20 in Mission 2 for example...and overall just definetely below average for a AMD XP 1800+ with Geforce 3, i'll make sure to take a look at this first thing tomorrow after work....

When I type preferences and go to 'audio' it says the render device was not found... is that normal?

When I go to drivers, there is only one choice, it is a bunch of jumble ending with DareAudio something or other, and I followed your steps above.

Should I reinstall?

I tried this and it made no difference to my framerate. not sure why no performance boost if others are getting it.

i dont have some of ur settings,.... why ?

XyZspineZyX
04-22-2003, 04:48 AM
Everybody:

1) If you follow my instructions to the letter, once you are in the Preferences dialogue box and go down to DRIVERS you will first see the Dare Audio with a bunch of garbled parameters.

This is normal.

Now, if you did follow my instruction carefully, you should then be able to click on that same bar (box) and a drop down menu will give you a choice for OpenAL Audio or DefOpenAL32 Audio depending on which one you decide to use.

Just select it, close the Preferences box and go back into RS and look at your FPS (console> type "stat fps" (no quotes)).

2) If you don't have any choices other than Dare Audio in the drivers then make sure you have a file called ALAudio.int or OpenALAudio.int in your RS\system directory.

If you don't have these files, then you probably didn't save the text file correctly as .int file (just "save as" and type OpenALAudo.int" and save it). The .int file is what tells the Unreal engine what to use/load as far as sound devices.

3) This is one temporary work around that may or may not add any FPS depending on your setup.

Every computer is different and some depend more on the hardware than others so anything is possible (or not possible as the case may be).

4) As far as my RS.ini file not having certain settings...

I stated earlier that I took some things from the UT2003 ini files and added them to RS to see if they make any difference or not.

My guess is that they don't since the RS engine might not be reading some of the parameters.

I always experiment with different settings on Unreal games to see what may or may not actually work that the developers might have not told us about to either enhance visual quality or FPS (hopefully, both).

5) Honestly...

This is something that UBI should have tested, tested and RETESTED in the QA phase before this game ever got out the door.

As a gaming company they should know that action gamers demand high FPS for the fact that if it isn't a decent, playable range (60-90) on average that there will be a ton of complaints...

And maybe the actual devs DID take this into consideration, but the marketing guys gave them an unrealistic deadline so they pushed the game out the door without having the time to properly test things so now it will be up to patches to bring this game up to the level it should be at.

Unfortunately, this is the trend that all recent games seem to be following and I for one am willing to work around it... But as a lowly gamer, I can only do so much on my end -- like this tweak -- And it is ultimately up to the developer to FIX the game to where it performs at an acceptable level.

First, thanks so much for the interesting tip. Second, it doesn't do anything for me at all. I'm still getting a whopping 10 - 12 FPS despite my Athlon 2400, Radeon 9700 Pro, Audigy 2, and 1024 MB RAM. I'm just praying the patch will fix the ridiculous FPS issues. It's obviously not a problem with the sound on my box.

Other people have been experiencing the preferences crash/lock up as well.

That should be a clear sign that "this game ain't right".

Meaning, you should at least be able to get into developer mode (the console) without it crashing or freezing.

All other Unreal engine games -- Like Postal 2 for example -- Work flawlessly with the console and preferences.

This may be a clear indication this game is worse than we thought if not even the console works correctly for some.

Anyway...

Thanks for the encouragement, fellas.

Like I said in another post, I don't mind tweaking games as I find it oddly "fun" in certain aspects...

But there is only so much that I/we can do on our end as this game obviously has some major flaws that are holding back performance -- One of which being Dare and I am sure there are others that we can't even identify because they are hidden deep within the coding itself.

The one other thing that I have to say about all of this is that while games always take time to be at the level we expect them to be... Far too often the trend, now, is to release a game that doesn't perform at an even acceptable level(s) on decent, custom-built gaming rigs that can run most OTHER games of similar specs (Unreal engine games; FPShooters) with much better results.

It may be "next-generation" and "pusing the envelope", but that doesn't mean we should all have to go out and buy P4 3.06 Gig chips and Radeon 97000s either... And even people WITH these specs still can't run the game so what does THAT tell you???

David:

Make sure you make your RS.ini file READ ONLY as this is what happens when you try and start up the game without having Dare Audio as the initial sound driver.

This is what I was talking about it being hard coded for some strange reason (it has to start with Dare... But you can then change the actual driver to something else).

Replace your audio render line with "DareAudio.DareAudioSubsystem, make your RS.ini read-only and then it should start up again.

To be able to get the "Preferences Menu" up, make you in your Display settings that you're running at the same Color Quality (32bit or 16bit). This worked for me (Thanks Tiberius1). Hope this helps! Oh and btw, very nice tweak, got an increase of about 5 FPS, but now it's not so jerky in fire fights /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif . I wish I could figure these things out hehe.

Hm...I didn't notice any sound quality drop, but on the other hand, I don't use EAX so I wouldn't know. I'm not a sound "buff," but it didn't affect the quality of the sound to me.

The reason I ask is because I find sound very important in RvS. You really hear footsteps and whatnot if you listen carefully. EAX only enhances this experience!

Alright, I am so frustrated. I have tried doing this for like an hour. I did everything exactly as you said, and this open al for windows doesn't appear in the preferences menu under driver. I don't know why. Please help. I went over your instructions about 10 times, and redid it, and still nothing. It only has the jumble of words with dare somwhere in there as an option.

thanks

Thanks for all the info. This is for Kungfu. You stated in an earlier post that you had set your menu resolution to the same as your game resolution. How did you do that?

Okay, i'm crashing when trying to go to Preferences from the main menu. I went to check that I'm running in 16 bit in-game (same as desktop), but I can't find where I set that option for RavenShield. I checked the options menu in game and the Direct3D tab of my control panel and didn't find anything. Feelin n00bish right now; where is this setting??

BTW, running 9700 pro with Cat 3.2s.

Thanks!!!

Went ahead and switched my desktop color depth to 32bit, and was able to get the 'fix' running correctly.. all I can say is wow! I'm playing at 1280*1024 with a framerate always over 90, and hardly any stutters at all. Raven shield is so much more fun now, thanks a ton!!!

All I can say to Ubi...fix Dare. It is suckin big time and ruining the game experience for a lot of people.

What I did was go into the Default.ini and change the parameters as follows:

[WinDrv.WindowsClient]
WindowedViewportX=640
WindowedViewportY=480
FullscreenViewportX=640
FullscreenViewportY=480

I simply changed the 640x480 values to 1024x768 respectively. I just got sick of the shell menu being in a totally different -- often skewed perspective -- On my monitor.

Change this both in the Defaul.ini and also the RavenShield.ini as the RS.ini doesn't always read what's on the Default.ini for some reason like it does in UT2003.

For those of you who got the tweak to work...

I am glad I could help some of you.

Yes.Dare Audio is definitely a huge system resource hog -- along with other problems that are code-based that none of us can fix on our end.

I flat out told UBI (in a respectful manner on another thread in the GD forum) that ignoring the big issue of low FPS is going to kill this game because unlike other games like RTS, high FPS is how we aim in this game (or makes aiming easier) and aiming is what Raven Shield is all about.

The fact that the Devs are not going to address the low FPS in the next couple of patches absolutely astounds me and I for one think this is a totally unacceptable "solution" on their part and is only doing more to hurt their company's reputation along with the R6 name as well... Which is a shame on both ends if you think about it. Oh, well...

Hi, thanks for the info on the menu resolution. I tried the sound tweaks and got a minimal increase in fps. Does this tweak work under windows 98? After a default install, the game runs better in win98 than winxp by a small margin. Also, does the game have to be patched to v1.1 for the sound tweak to make a big difference? Right now i am still runing v1.0. On average, I get 20-30fps, and with the sound tweak, I get around 30-35 most of the time. It usually stays in the yellow, although sometimes it still dips down to the red. Also, what version of the creative sound drivers are you using? Currently, I am using (i think) the first version for winXP. Previously, i had the newest drivers and they introduced a small ticking noise when i used the digital out to my reciever, so i switched back to my older ones. I am currently running cat3.2's on WinXP SP1. On my 98 install, i have cat 3.1 with (i think) standard sound drivers (they could be current downloaded drivers but i can't remember, i gave up on the game for about 3 weeks and in that time i got a gamecube so i haven't until now given fart about the game). Anyways, thanks for the tips and your time figuring this stuff out as UBI (cough, french company, cough, don't buy anything else from them, cough) obviously doesn't care about us american gamers. hehe sorry for the political references, but i extremely do not care for the way the french have handled them selves latley. Anyways, thanks in advance for any help.

Just a note and a bump.

I haven't tried this tweak because I'm already getting on average 110 fps playing.

I have only made one tweak to my system and that was changing 'UseVSync=True' to 'UseVSync=False' under the [D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice] section in the RavenShield.ini. That one change boosted my fps from 40-60 to 90-140. It only goes below 100 if there is some action and smoke.

For those of you who may not have read other threads and are getting really crappy FPS, don't run at 1024x768. I see a lot of people posting running that resolution. For some reason that resolution just doesn't work. 800x600 I run around 100 FPS, 1280x768(or 1280x1024) I run over 100 FPS. 1024x768 I run at 30 FPS.

I run everything at high quality settings except rainbow and tango detail at medium, currently have audio acceleration turned off, but it didn't make that much of a difference.

I know there is a bug or problems with ATI cards versus Nvidia cards (I have a Ti4400) and I don't know if it is soley drier related, or just how the card reads the RS game code...

But that is definitely a common factor with other low FPS with ATI users as well (as well as turning off TruForm).

I would definitely patch to 1.1 -- Even though, in theory, it shouldn't affect FPS since it was merely a CD-Key check fix...

Re: 1024x768 Resolution...

I've read the same thing on various threads in that high end cards like the 4600 and R9700 Pro are geared toward higher gaming resolutions and therefore, coders are now making games purposely perform better at those resolutions because of the way cards are designed.

I've tried the highest res that RS can go (1280x1024), but I didn't see any real difference even with my tweak in place.

Others have said that you can go as low as 800x600 and get about the same response (without my tweak; the nomral 30 FPS on average w/nothing going on).

That, again, tells me that there is definitely something WRONG with this engine because by definition, you should be able to get Quake III statistics if you run at anything below 1024x768 -- like 640x480 -- Yet that is NOT happening with this game according to many who have switched resolutions in the hopes of getting better performance by sacraficing visual quality.

I did this and I like it. but what I like more is using the ut2003 D3DDrv.dll file for my ravenshield. holy crap it's faster. way faster. I can actually run it at higher resolution now. I always ran on 800x600 and now 800x600 is fluid and smooth. I run on 1024x768 and that is a tiny bit jerky, but still very playable.

same concept here.

Big Perm:

If you followed the steps I gave correctly...

All you have to do is then click on the box with the jumbled DareAudio parameters and it should become a drop down menu box where you should be able to see and select "OpenAL Audio".

If you click it and it still gives you no other choices, then make sure you saved the OpenALAudio.int file as an "int" file and not as a text file.

The "int" files tell the Unreal Engine what drivers to use and what to load up. We are trying to get it to load up OpenAL audio instead of Dare because Dare is a huge resource drain.

Let me know if that helps or not.

Some people can't get this to work and for some, even if they do get it to work, it doesn't help them.

This is because all systems are configured differently as far as hardware goes, including soundcards and how the PC processes information.

ok guys... ive got it worked out, for all u who could not get it to work, i think i know why, ok the authors instructions on making the .int file is what confused me and may have u as well. im not positive on how to save as a .int file, but anyways this is what i did, ok in the system folder, there are many int files, now they dont look like txt files(not white with scribbles on them) they look different, ok now find one of those int files and click copy, now paste it onto ur desktop, now rename this file to its proper name "OpenALAudio" dont put .int on the end, ok now, open this file up with wordpad, which can be done if u double click it... click choose program to open with, and select word pad, ok now u have to delete everything that is inside that file and paste the lines the author so generously gave us into the file. now save it and put it into ur system folder and u are good to go, just do the rest of the steps and u should be fine. gl /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Glad you could get it to work, Big Perm.

And also thank you for hosting the files.

OpenAL is a Creative Sound Blaster format so if someone gives you grief about hosting a "copyrighted" dll... Just delete the links.

UBI has got to get on this and recode the engine.

I don't care what anybody says and what they want to do or not. They are going to have to because a workaround like this should not have to be done in the first place to get the game to perform at acceptable levels.

Try this with Splinter Cell too and see if the frames go up. I am just curious; it's the same system and Unreal Engine build.

Also...

I'm hoping Dragontch comes back and tells us how to use the D3DDrv.dll from UT2003 to help as well because if it truly does give better frame rates then I am going to be doubly peeved at UBI for making us -- the people who paid $50 USD for this game -- Having to "patch" the game together from components of other Unreal Engine games to get this one to work the way it should have been released!

However, the thing I noticed with this tweak is that even though the game is more playable...

FPS still dip down to lower end numbers (20-30) from like the 100s on certain maps and that just tells me that there is something definitely WRONG with the RS engine.

UBI needs to make it perform better in the sense that it is more consistent and reliable to give us a better (smoother) playing experience.

In fact, if you and your Clan mates could post here or on the thread I put in the GD forum, it will help Berlu (a Dev) see if this is really a problem with the game if he can see different computer specs and whether or not it makes any difference at all.

I think it does (obviously).

TitoTrinidad wrote:

That's probably the main difference because you are already forcing your CPU to do some of the sound processing -- Unless you have an NForce board where the on-board audio is designed VERY well and doesn't add to the CPU -- So there is no real "bi-pass" going on as with dedicated sound cards.

If I may be so bold as to suggest you invest in moderately priced sound card because I bet you are also getting slow performance in other games as well? Maybe not as slow as RS, but I bet they could be faster, especially with that CPU and GPU you have.

I would suggest anything BUT a Creative Labs card (lower end) because the drivers suck and the sound quality is pretty bad as well. I used to have an old SB Live! Gamer, 5.1... But switched to my current one and haven't looked back.

Sound is a HUGE part of why certain games perform well or not (as in RS's case).

It is often the most overlooked aspect in terms of performance as well.

Hi KungFu_CIA, Thanks for taking your time to produce such a compehensive guide to improving the frame rate in RvS./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

You are quite right that sound (cards) is/are more often than not the real cause of poor video performance./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I have tried you tweak and it works very well and was easy to understand.

Also thanks to Big Perm for hosting the files, that made it even easyer.

Now to my main observation,/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif I got a large increase in FPS from around 40-50 to allmost steady at 78 FPS. But that was with my old VIA MoBo (ASUS A7V-266E), yesterday my new nForce2 (ASUS A7N8X) arrived, and now my FPS is steady at 78 with or without the Dare sound system. My system is otherwise identical, except new RAM PC2700 iso PC2100, same amount though.

I dont know exactly why this has happened, but I have had the VIA chipset under suspicion for being buggy, for quite a while. I have had so many performance problems in varoius games, that I knew something was broke on my system - all the benchmarks 3DMark2001SE & 3DMark2003 were on par with what I would expect from my system but when it came to the games like RvS, the problems came out.

One thing I know for shure my ASUS A7V-266E and SB Audigy is a VERY bad combination.

Cheers TT

If I may be so bold as to suggest you invest in
- moderately priced sound card because I bet you are
- also getting slow performance in other games as
- well? Maybe not as slow as RS, but I bet they could
- be faster, especially with that CPU and GPU you
- have.

Yeah, I will probably do that. This probably isn't the best forum to ask, but what soundcard will give me the best performance for a (very) reasonable price. Philips is pretty cheap over here. Is it worth it?

Also will that guy post the D3d.dll thing.

I think we'll find the "D3d.dll" tale is just that, someone having sport with us.
Anyway, Mr.KungFu, thnx again, the audio swap is helping people. And I will tell my clan bros to post on the other thread as you requested. ..
Some curious things I've observed in respect to the audio swap...If I'm not on the main RS menu screen when I try to enter the console to swap drivers, the swap doesn't take...all outward appearances say that it occurred , if I close console, then reopen it, itshows OpenALAudio as the driver. And if I check the Ravenshield log it shows the swap, however if I check TaskManager my CPU stays at 100% in use..If I then go to RV's main menu and do the driver swap again then check TaskManager ,CPU usage has dropped.
But this drop in CPU stress is only in game..just standing in game CPU usage is 10-15%, when action starts ,or I just start runnin&gunnin it goes up to 50-60%,
and if I go to Menu or Server Select screen , it climbs back up to 90%, and my framerate will drop ,..fpsranges are:Menu screen-200-300 lol,Server Select screen-40-45,.and in game avg.60-80, but as you've noted it will still drop to 20-30 under certain conditions or in certain places. My overall fps. gain w/audio swap is 45fps ingame w/action taking place.
It's relly a shame they coded this game so poorly, it could been a real classic.I know they need a chance to do they're patch magic, and all great games needed a patch or two, but these problems seem to be related to the basic structuring of the games coding. But hey , I've been wrong before.lol.

Philips is good *cough, bias; I have one - LOL, cough*...

But really, I think the Philips Seismic Series is a great card in both sound quality -- for both games, music and especially MP3s -- And reliance in that it installs without a hitch and has excellent driver support.

The latest drivers -- if compared to the SB Live! series -- Are like comparing an '57 Chevy with a Porche 911 Turbo. They are both good and nice cars in their own right... But the Porche, for 2003, does its job much better and much more efficiently AND it doesn't install all these registry changes that you can't get rid of if you ever decide to switch cards again like all CL cards do.

The Turtle Beach Santa Cruz 5.1 is also another highly recommend, non-CL card.

Spracker:

Thank you for that information.

It really DOES help out in that I can tell Berlu (a Dev) this and hopefully he can narrow it down even further.

What this sounds like is memory leak problem because it's like RS -- either in SP or MP -- Goes through "phases" in terms of performance (with or without tweaks) in that people have said the game actually will start out fine with acceptable FPS (60+)... But after a couple of hours, it drops down to below 30 and they have to reset the game.

That means there is some kind of leak going on because a game's performance should not drop gradually over time like RS does -- Which I noticed it does as well.

In addition, I had to reformat my HD last night and did a clean install of RS -- version 1.0 -- And did my tweak and it is the same as with 1.1. While I didn't expect a change (because the 1.1 patch was only for CD-Key problems), that just proves the engine/game was put out before it was finished and.or, like you said, the coding is all screwed up and is NOT letting out hardware process it efficiently -- Which is the exact cause of why were are getting low FPS in this game, but not others where the code is more organized and optimized.

I also put in DirectX 8.2 (Direct Play) and still get the same performance (w/or w/o my tweak so it's once again, the game and not hardware/software related).

HI, interesting tweak you found there!

I don't really see any difference though in the FPS.

I can chose the the OpenAL from the drivers section in the preferences menu, I do so from the main menu when in RvS.

I don't see any difference and the CPU is still at 100% usage. Any suggestions reasons why this doens't have any effect on my sytstem? I have a soundblaster 4.1

I tried running at both high priority and standard, both disabling hardware acceleration and with full from dirctxdiag. Im getting the exact same results as before though. No fps boost what so ever. I saw another post regarding the same thing, the guy said he CPU utilisation showed he managed to get the change to work, and it was cause he wasn't going to preferences from the console when in the Main menu. That is where I tried it too but no good;/

Any help as always greatly appreciated.

Might do when in game in the CPU respect but my fps is almost identical, I know so cause I have found areas that are resource hungry and know how I get minimum e.t.c. and Im always testing against those spots.

Nah, unfortunately is not working, 100% CPU usage in both cases. Tested while in menus and in game idling when I start, both with Dare audio and with the DefOpenAL.
Would anyone have any suggestions please?

Whenever I try to go into my "preferences" folder in the console, RS seems to stop responding. I was wondering is there another way to change the "Dare Audio" file to a desired one? Or can I fix that console crash?

Hey Kunfu CIA I have a very similiar system:

WinXP
asus a7v8x mobo
Athlon 2700
ATI radeon 9700 pro
1024 mb DDR 2700
and phillips edge 705

What new drivers for the phillips card do u have?
Also I actually get better frame rates with the onboard sound. As soon as I throw in the phillips my fps dip into the 10's! I get a steady 60, I use v-sync, with no drops with the onboard. Im going to try ur method in hopes to fix the problem with my phillips card since I like the sound quality much better.

not sure what happened, i was playing fine saturday, yesterday i tried some of the stuff u guys mentioned, and couldn't even open the game. i got a directx error, saying i couldn't play because i didn't have directx 8.1b or higher, however right when i got that error i downloaded the new directx and it still didn't work. now i'm redoing my entire computer. this time i'm smart and am putting a partition for the game that is easily formattable. i do learn. now i'll try the sound, see if that works.

So i check the Ut2k3 site and i see patch2199 is not the latest. Now its v2225.So i re instal my Ut2k3 game and try the new DefOpenAL32.dll and now i can start the map "bank" with a great 60 fps compare to 18-25 before...many other map run like charm now
I dont understand that tweak but it work lol so i dont ask

the new file is 0.9.9.1/156kb
the old i use first is 0.9.8.7/144kb

Maybe this can help

Thxs a lot for that tweak it's helped my FPS a bit more now.

I got a Geforce 2 MX 400 64mb ram, amd athlon xp 1800+ at 1400mhz and 384mb ram. I got all the details on RS set to high and resolution of 1024x764 with around 10 - 20 fps. But with the tweak I get to around 30 sometimes and the game feels much more smoother http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

XyZspineZyX

that's the latest patch for UT2k3. nothing to do with RvS except for the openalaudio.dll and if possible the d3ddrv.dll will help too.

XyZspineZyX
09-17-2003, 07:33 AM
did nothing for me at all..

your best bet is to just re-install, get the latest drivers
for your card, and tweak the .ini file bit by bit and test as you do it.. also check out catalyst drivers.
as far as i can see the DARE sound does not have much to do with FPS..
And if you have a processor with thats above 2.0 ghz it should not make any difference..
and if i gives you a FPS rise it aint gonna be much..

XyZspineZyX
09-17-2003, 08:55 PM
true, i'm still going to use it cause it doesn't seem as jumpy though. also a way that increased my fps was to lower the MaxLODTextures (i think that's the name), the only problem is if ur really into the graphics, u are definatly gonna loose some of them. i was willing to have that consequence, and thus i can play with an increased FPS.

XyZspineZyX
10-05-2003, 12:13 AM
I know this is an old post, but I just did as you said and now I get the message:

OS: Windows NT 4.0 (Build: 1381)
CPU: GenuineIntel Unknown processor @ 1692 MHz with 511MB RAM
Video: NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600 (4523)

Failed to find object 'Class OpenALAudio.OpenALAudioSubsystem'

History: UObject::SafeLoadError <- UObject::StaticLoadClass <- UEngine::InitAudio <- UGameEngine::Init <- InitEngine

every time I load up my system! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Although once i had finished stes #7 and onwards I then went back to main menu and tried to go online to play on a RvS server, but again, as soon as I go into the Multiplayer Menu area the FPS drops no end straight away again, so I doubt it will make much difference tbh.

XyZspineZyX
10-05-2003, 12:43 AM
the reason y it won't load anymore is because u didn't make ur ravenshield.ini read-only. to fix this open it up, look for AudioDevices and change the line to:

AudioDevice=DareAudio.DareAudioSubsystem

cracking tip mate.. the sound one that is. and it works for me too in case you hadnt guessed.

what narks me is i'm running an athlon 2gig, 256mb ram, ge force 3ti200 and win xp and its still a bit of a dog even with this fix. still, no more pauses which made it unplayable up until now.. well not for the first hour playing.. then it turns to shyte again but that seems to be a common theme too!.

hmmm..

me soundcard is a tad crap.. a creative pci 128.. i guess its time to sort that. games still a hog though..

XyZspineZyX

it is a tad crap.. well totally crap probably.

dunno which to upgrade first. there's plenty of people on here posting with tons of ram or flash audigy 2's and stuff still getting carp fps..

i dunno.. could recycle the cd.. seems a shame.. :-)

10-07-2003, 08:30 AM
Well for the record, I am yet to see any improvement with my FPS. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif And like jaz255 wrote, there doesn't seem to be any reason to upgrade as other people with a top of the range system seem to be having problems.

There's something more underlying than just a soundcard issue I think.
