The title speaks for itself. Anyone have these games and what are your reviews on these ?

I notice they are getting cheaper and I'm wondering if they are worth it to pick up.

I have SFP1. This one was keeping me away for about one week from IL2.If you install all patches and add-ons it becomes a nice sim. Dogfight harder than IL2 though , much harder.Especially against those Migs.They turn circles around you.This is a BnZ game if you fly USN/USAAF. Neat. Tons of weapons.Open architecture.Cute. Wings over Vietnam is just a remake as I heard.I will buy it though

It depends how much abstraction you can stand.

Their maps are half-sized, which, with jets is crucial: for example in Vietnam, I've seen reports of fully loaded Thuds flying from Thailand to Hanoi, hitting targets and still making it back on fumes. Impossible: you had to hit the tanker before entering NVietnamese airspace, and most likely on the way home, if you used any full military or afterburner. You just can't have any kind of realism if you don't include fuel constraints.

Then, there's the community:
The modding community in SFP1 is at once the savior and the big detriment of the sim. On one hand, they're extremely prolific, and have added countless weapons and planes to the sim, some of it of very nice visual quality. On the other hand, they have little regard for accuracy, and even less for any kind of critical commentary on contributions, no matter how well meant or factual. They take any kind of comment besides, "Oh wow, GREAT JOB" as a personal insult to themselves, their mother, all their ancestors and their dog.

Then, there's the sim engine itself. Online has really never worked properly, and the developer has gone on record as saying he's not up for supporting it for online play. So, if you like the online aspect of IL-2/FB/PF, you can just about forget about it happening in SF/WoV.Then, to add insult to injury, most of the missions provided with the original sim suck, and can't be easily edited, so you're stuck with a very finite set of scenarios where the goal always seems to be "bomb the comm building". So much for the "boxed" scenarios.

So, although it's got some things to recommend it, the lack of full online co-op and dogfight play, and the "sim-lite" abstractions have kept me from getting into it. sort of like, "All these planes and nowhere to fly them except in canned offline missions." I own a copy of SFP1, and have been kind a close to giving WoV a try, but the big BIG underlying faults of the sim, the developer and the community have stopped me from doing so.

I have heard that the online multi play for SFP1 has been fixed, and works properly, and that WOV is ncely polished with none of SFP1s faults

I have SPF1 and will reinstall soon with all patches...the radar was always a treat to use to finds the enemy, and is realistic, inc the FCS...the one big complaint i can remeember having about it, aside from its THEN lack of online multi working, was that even a few rounds of 20mm would destroy ships! lol

I just may give WOV a try

I heard some people who fly it say they enjoy it alot, they say scenery is same quality as cfs2 and models are not the best looking either but runs very well and fms are done very well. I havent flown it so cant say.

I have WOV, and its a good game. But compared to Pacific fighters...its not in the same league! P-F's is way ahead of the pack! Being a big fan of the vietnam air war, it fills in a large void in that time frame usually missed by most sim makers. Its very close to being historically accurate, graphics are good (not great) and its easy to get up and running in short order.

I wouldn't say it's that easy to get up and running, since it has so many mods to it!! It's a real challenge to keep up on all the mods and additions: planes, weapons, terrains, scenarios, loading screens, the mind boggles!

But I think that's healthy, all things considered.

its not bad to tinker with.

there is a lot more action compared to SFP1. some graphic detail settings have been added thru the latest patch i believe. (now you can set the horizon very very far back. lo-mac style shadowing on the aircraft has been added as well (i forgot the hardware term for it)

if you dont like the speechpack, opening songs, or other game sound settings from SFP1, then you wont like this. it it EXACTLYthe same. a slight letdown, but i always enjoyed the speechpack.

consider it as LO-MAC "LITE" in the vietnam era, and can run full max graphical settings on all but the slowest computers. not my FAV, of course but in the world of sims, its a nice "coffe table book" to pickup and get hands dirty with from time to time, on an era not to often found in our world of sims.

Had alot of fun flying the Mig-17 in SF. Problems in WOV I've seen remarks on are the carrier Ops aren't really very good at all.

One nice thing is it's an open sim so it's pretty easy to change campaigns to your liking.Some really nice things but a pain to get all the mods & weapon packs working together if you're a bit disorganized like me. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
A few real nice people in the forum but mostly they come across as prett intolerant. I hate to say it but that has stopped me from playing SFP! just because I don't feel comfortable asking questions over there & some of the Attitude I find kinda offensive. Prety lame to let peoplekeep ya away from a sim tho & it may be better now, just don't critisize anything or ask why a seemingly irrelevant plane is modelled.
The answer is 'cause someon want ed to make it-but somebody will prolly take offense if a ya ask.

main point if ya like early Jets give it a go! SF P1 can probably be picked up for $5 somewhere so that will give you a good idea of WOV which is little more than a patch from what I hear.

I spent a lot of time on SFP1 and kept up with all the mods and add-ons for awhile. I could never really get into it and eventually gave up.

I think this sim had the potential to be like IL2 for jets. Graphically, it looks quite nice. The flight models were ok for the original aircraft that came with the game. That's about all the good I can say. Here are the problems I had with this sim.

Many features of this sim were not completed. Missions are randomly generated and they suck. There is one campaign which I have never bothered with. It is possible to download a mission editor, but no way to edit mission briefings, etc. There are many mods out there and most look great, but flight models are often very poor. While this improves the sim, it also contributes to its inconsistent fragmented feel.

Like I said, the sim had lots of potential and the raw material is definately there, but its lack of polish and attention to detail prevents it from being something great like IL2.

Since my simming time is scarce, I will probably not go back to it.
