View Full Version : Map tails for GWX2

I can't remember where the link is, or where I read of it, but there is a way of reinstating the map tails fof ships and aircraft for GWX 2. Does anyone know how I can do this?

Thanks in advance http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Grey tails

Found after a quick search on the other forum... http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=127147

I have to say, I've got used to 'no tails', and I prefer it now. Maybe because it's because I like drawing stuff on the navigation map... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

When the contact is reported, the message you see gives the target's heading and speed. All you need to do is draw a line on the map from the target marker, in the appropriate direction of the provided heading. Then plot an estimated intercept course as normal.

On my ship there's always someone, who's assigned duty it is to keep the plotting map updated with incoming contactreports (bridge, sonar, radio). So of course position and reported heading is noted on the map. None of this require my presence. Nor should it. I need my sleep. Or may be on the bin http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
Only contacts made from the boat (sonar, radar, eyes) requires my immidiate attention.
But that's the procedures on my ship. I know other Kaleuns prefers to have hands on everything, but I like to do as little as possible and leave as much as possible to the men. Attack plans and plotting interception courses, that's when I insist on stepping in.
Some talk about "immersion factor", but I treat that part like "beauty". In the end it's all in the beholder of the eye (or mind).
Each to his or hers own one.

Happy Hunting!

I'm getting used to the additional challenge presented by no map tails. It means I have to be more careful/vigilant, when trailing contacts.
It keeps me on my toes, and makes me feel even more successful when I finally find them - and take them out.

I believe I have the answer to this topic.

Check my forum The Barracks (http://barracks.freeforums.org/) Go to the "GWX 2.0" forum and you will see the info I posted for our group. You shouldn't have to register to access this forum.

This information has been verified by a GWX Team member I connected with over at subsim, as I asked the very same question there, so you can know this info is accurate.

Here's my view of the subject.

I kinda like it without the tails, now that I finally have GWX-2 running more or less smoothly.

A real U-boat did NOT have the target's direction just based on an intercepted radio report. The range was quite approximate too.

No map tails gives us a durection, like SSW and speed. Quite enough, if you think that there were no allied planes near the US coast, and they barely transmitted a contact if it was one ship. Since minimizing transmissions is a scientific way to prolong life.

it just looks more realistic to me this way

I agree about the realism also, with the exception that you would know the direction and heading of your own boat.

It's just a shame you can't put tails back on your sub without adding them to enemy ships.

I agree with the sentiments with regards to the map tails, and I think it's a great idea. The reason I wanted them back is that I have limited time to play this game as I'm far busier in real life these days, I still want to enjoy playing the game even though my time is far more limited as before so I believe in cutting to the chase - I found with out the map tails I was playing for much longer.

A feeble excuse maybe but until I have more time - full realism is out of the window for the time being.
