View Full Version : First Big Warship Convoy

I am new to the game and have been playing about a month now with the GWX Gold mod, I am on my first real attempt at a career out of Wilmshaven on my 3rd patrol.

It's Nov 1939 and so far all I have run across are a bunch of lone targets either commercial freighters, tankers, or an occasional ASW warship, so basically I am jonesing to run across a nice fat convey to tear into. Well last night I am on my way to patrol AM34, it's fast approaching dawn as I am heading West in the straights North of Britian halfway between Scalpa flow and AM34 when my lookouts spot a warship just NW of my position.

Initial reports show the ship to be an ASW and I am already in his coverage area, while I am trying to maneuver into his blind spot my lookouts spot a convoy that this ASW is screening for. Its' still pretty dark out and the seas are so rough that the ASW does't detect me, the downside is that even at flank speed my sun struggles to maintain 10 knots as it loses propeller contact with the water in the swells. I look over the convoy and I see 4 Destroyers screening for the Battleship Hood which is due North of me over 7000 yards off and heading SW at 24 kts, how frustrating as I am lucky to peak at 13 kts as I give chase to try and close the distance for a torpedo salvo.

Now for the suprise, as I try to close on the Hood my lookouts report more ships lagging behind the Hood, two Revenge class Battlewagons are cruising along towards me at 21kts followed by another 3 destroyers. I realize that there is no way for me to close to torp range on the Hood so instead I plot an intercept course for the other two Capital ships instead.

I sprint ahead at flank and eventually close to a little over 3000 meters before my AOB starts to degrade, it's now or never so I launch a 4 torp salvo at the lead Battleship and put my most effective torp room team at work to reload so I can fire another salvo at the 2nd trailing Battleship. Just as my tubes are starting to reload I get to watch my fist salvo close on the lead ship, it kills me to watch two torps slip past the rear of the ship and miss, the 3rd torp hits home and the 4th just misses the bow and slips past. All tubes are now reloaded as the Battleship searchlights flicker on searching for the source of the torp that hit it, my firing solution on the 2nd Battleship is now locked in, it's another long shot salvo of 4 torps that end up with another 1 in 4 success rate.

It's so frustrating watching all these Capital ships slip out of my grasp as they manage to steam away from me even wounded by torps. Now the rear screen of Destroyers know I am in the area and they begin to tighten the net on me, I try to slip away on the surface in the rough seas but I am spotted, so I dive and end up playing cat and mouse for some time until I finally manage to elude them and continue back to port.

Luck was not with me this hunt, had the seas been smoother I might have had more warning of the approaching convoy and had a chance to move into a better firing position to have a real shot at sinking a Battleship. It was fun to finally run across a convoy though, especially one with 3 Battleships in it, oh well maybe next time.

I know the frustration. I am playing gold also and all of the task forces that I have run across have been a destroyer or 2 with some asw trawlers lol. Not exactly what I would classify as a task force. It had to make you almost jump out of your chair though when you saw those big boys coming at you! I have had the same luck with the weather. So far I have ran across 4 convoys in 4 patrols and been unable to do anything to them because the seas are so rough that I cant even see the ships until they are about 600 meters away. Ironically as soon as I just give up and change course the weather gets nice lol

Nice writeup! I love reading such detailed after action reports. It does give you a rush when you see a gaggle of fat targets coming at you, doesn't it? One of my favourite encounters was to the south of Rockall Bank. I was surfaced, sailing south as dusk was falling, when one of the lookouts reports a contact to the west. It is sailing east at a good clip. I swing around to intercept and go to full speed. I am hesitant to do so, as I do not wish my wake to be detected, but I am gambling that the darkening sky will conceal me. A few minutes later the sighting reports are coming in; there are four or five destroyers clipping along. I wonder what they are guarding. Then a minute or two later an aircraft carrier hoves into view. That's it! I stay surfaced as long as I dare making my high speed run to a point from which I have a chance of a hit. When my nerves can no longer take it, I dive to periscope depth and reduce speed. At about 4,000 metres I fired off a salvo of four. I forget how many hit, but that carrier went down. I didn't stick around to watch the torpedoes; as soon as they were out of my boat I dove deep and steered to a different course away from my launching point. The escorts proceeded to hunt around my firing point and beat up the sea with depth charges, but I was deep and silent, slowly pulling away from them. To top off that patrol I managed to find a convoy and added more tonnage to my score. Best of all, I got back to port safely and had a wild time celebrating my Knight's Cross with those sexy French nurses.

I have to be agree with Kaleun1961. Very nicely written. I've had many encounters with Task Forces in both SHIII and SHIV where all I could do was watch them sail by and be able to fire torpedoes. It is a very helpless feeling.

Nice job! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Nice narrative, CaptSinkem.

Trust me, next time, take my advice, and surface, go to flank speed, hard to starboard, then hard to port, and all the while use both your deck gun AND your flak gun against the Battleship!!!

That should do the trick.

If you start taking damage, just hit: "Ctrl-Alt-Delete".

Fun encounter. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I sunk a Revenge battleship with my deck gun once. Crippled it with my last 2 torps and it was dead in the water, listing heavily. I parked my sub under it to avoid the destroyers and had to wait about 20 minutes for them to finally leave.

Then I surfaced on the blind side of the listing battleship where no guns could reach me and blasted away at the hull at point blank range until it went down. A very satisfying moment. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
