I am making enquiries about a good quality agp card for il2. I currently run a nvidea fx 5700le. What else is there & does ATI have a card IL2 specific, I remember seeing a post of a card with the pacific fighters artwork on it.
I am interwsted in a X1600 pro 512, is this a card that can compare to a nvidea 6800gt. What are the pros & cons with ATI vs Nvidea?

Never seen a IL-2 specific ATI card.

I don't think the X1600Pro can compete with a 6800GT but the X1650 XT might be able to. I can't remember if that comes in AGP flavour or not. The X1950Pro is apparently now available in AGP flavour and that might do the trick very nicely.

ATI and nVidia differences...well you'll see a half dozen arguments for one or the other. There's, in reality, not that many big differences between them and ultimately its matter of which card is best in the price/performance/features bracket you're after. AGP limits things somewhat but you're bound to have a great card either way.

So what gives us good frame rates is it core clock speed or mem clock speed?

I believe that there is an AGP model of the nVidia 7 series, and that should run IL-2 very well.

I think clock speed and memory size combine to give performance. Memory size allows the card to store information, and clock speed allows the card to process the information. There are also a whole lot of other things that determine performance - have a look at tomshardware.com, they seem pretty good for technical stuff.

As Icefire says, there is an AGP version of the X1950XT, which should be a storming card for IL-2. You'd probably want to check your power supply was adequate.

Cheers,

I just got the saphire ATI X1950pro and although i had some trouble gettin it workin at first as rocketdog says it IS a kick a$$ card http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif

BUT,unless your runnin at least a 500wt power supply be prepared to have to upgrade to something pretty chunky(Im runnin a 480wt supply and just ordered a 670wt modular power supply!)But if you get it the right power it's a fantastic card that wil give you some lovely eye candy. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif

Being able to run IL2 with eye-candy turned up with good frames isn't totally dependant on your video card. RAM and processor play a large role as well. But if your processor is a P4 3.2/AMD 3700+ or later and you have 2GB of decent RAM, then these 2 cards will make IL2 purrrr.

ATI - X1950 Pro

NVidia - 7900GS

Both are available in AGP and currently represent the fastest video cards available in AGP respectively.

Well I got the HIS 1950 pro and it ain't all gravy let me tell ya. We've been discussing this card like mad over at the Tech Support forum so you might wanna look over there. I think the main problem with this card is that Cat 7.1 drivers aren't really optimized for the agp version of this card. I think a lot of problems will be "sorted out" with Cat. 7.2. At least I hope they will.

I just bought myself a Geforce 7800GS GLH from Gainward for my AGP slot. Runs IL-2 at 1280x960x32 with Water=4 and Effects=1 very good. Effects=2 runs decent, as long as the screen does not get too crowed with smoke.

You need a 350W PSU minimum for this VGA. It's connected to 2 HDD connectors.

Good card to bridge the gap until 2009, when I will be buying a new PC.

Only bad thing is the "Black-circle-on-the-water" bug.

I have a 7800GS (upgraded from my outdated 5950) and it runs Il2 very well. Perfect mode, water=2 about 75 fps on average and with AC with mirrors about 60 on 1724x768x32. It will run Il2 with everything turned up to its highest (about 40-45 fps)but I am a huge fan of getting the most fps and it still looking decent.

Where can I find a 7900GS AGP? I have looked everywhere for this sucker and cannot find one. I will do a total system upgrade sometime early next year.

Id say anything above an XT1650 or a 6800GT... Try here (http://castle.pricewatch.com/s/search.asp?s=AGP+video+cards&Page=15&c=Video+Cards&srt=t&view=&his=0&paging=1&mpi=37&mpc=Video+Cards&sci=37).....hit next to scroll to the next higher priced round of cards.
