View Full Version : Got a problem with all my P-51's. Strange triangles on the wing? Any ideas?

Okay, not really noticed this before as I usually go around in my P-47, but after loading up a 'Vanilla' IL2 4.09 I went and loaded up a P-51D 20NA (it also appears on the B and C Models too) and took it for a flight.

Looking out at the wings I saw this:

Now this is a default skin, so not a custom made error, but I don't know what it is that causes it.

I loaded a Custom skin too and got the same result.

If this is part of the model, then I'm embarrassing myself, apologies, but if it isn't, what is causing it?

I don't know what they do but they are supposed to be there..

Note the ones on the port wing also. They may have been there to add stability. On my scale Mustang they are raised up like little airfoils..

A part of the model. I'd guess these are aerodynamic fairings for aileron actuators.

My guess would be that they are there to direct sufficient airflow over the control surfaces at lower speeds, or any speed. Laminar flow wings means that the "hump" is further back and they might have had issues with good enough flow over that area. Especially since the wings on a P-51 are very slippery and it might have been some issues controlling the flow direction over/under them.

Think Venturi tunnels, or the directional "flaps" you see on modern rally cars etc. All to direct the airflow better to gain efficiency over a specific surface.

Or they could be actuator fairings like others have mentioned. Never seen the actual shape before on a real plane, so I don't have any references.

Okay, thanks guys. I think if they were a light-grey texture then it wouldn't have been so-obvious, but I just couldn't work out (when you see a real P-51 image) why there are two Black Triangles? Just doesn't even match the 'skin' texture colour?

Thanks for figuring it out though, much appreciated.....just need to work out how to fix it now!!!

Well, I went and updated a custom skin, with the same resolution 1152x864 (what I usually record with Fraps) and found the 'Black Triangles'.

So after changing the colour of the texture I now have this:

Will test again at higher resolution (1920x1200), but it's a pain to record at the rez. with FRAPS.

The starkness of the shape has more to do with the lighting. Notice that the fuselage is also wrapped in shadow.

Lightening them will only make them glare more if looking from the other side of that image http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Found some imeages of real P-51's too, P-51H:

I know about a guy that is really into P-51's. I'll send him a message. This has gotten me curious.

Clarence "Bud" Anderson's P-51-D:

A restored "H" in flying condition? Whoa! That's a rare beast. Gotta google more info about this one!

I think I have 'fixed' it myself. For some reason I was in DirectX mode (without noticing) and then saw that by changing it back to OpenGL, the Black Triangles disappeared. Cool!

Yeah it looked like a glitch in the lighting engine (the Gladiator has one just behind the cockpit where a particular panel always appears "in shadow" even in bright light, the workaround is to lighten that part of the skin).

Seems like the bug was only in the directX version.

Ok, got the answer from the "P-51 Guru". The humps are there to clear the bell cranks on the aileron controls. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Check out this link from another thread.
http://www.stclairphoto-imagin...Mustang/P51_swf.html (http://www.stclairphoto-imaging.com/360/P51-Mustang/P51_swf.html)

you can zoom in and see them on the wings.
