The P-38 Lightning did fly some strike missions. They often carried large bombs under the wings and dive bombed. One of the more famous of these missions was on Ploesti. I believe 40 P-38s took part and put a part of the oil refinery out of action.
Then there was the droopsnoot lightning with an extra person in the front with a Norden bombsite.
