This video/article was originally intended for AC1, but applies very well to AC2 due to the lack of a built-in story replay feature:

AC2 has a lot more autosave points than AC1. I'm pretty sure it saves every time you start a mission, finish a mission, reach a checkpoint, find a feather, end a cinematic, exit a store menu, upgrade the villa, find a statue, find a glyph, solve a glyph, or sneeze too loudly.

So that system probably wouldn't work too well.

EDIT: It also saves when you open a chest.

Ac1 already has a mission replay feature so this video was never needed for ac1

^ Did you guys even read the article?

I guess I have to explain. AC2 does not let you replay individual story missions. Suppose you've finished the game, and you would like to assassinate Marco Barbarigo again. How would you do it? Right now, you would have to replay the entire AC2 story up to the point of the assassination. A pretty big nuisance, right? This article shows you how to load the Marco mission in just a few minutes. It makes it much more convenient to replay parts of the game.

AC1 lets you reload previous memory blocks, but you have to repeat the talk to Al Mualim, Kingdom travel, investigations, etc. This article shows you how to load directly to the talking to the Bureau leader before the assassination. Again, it saves a lot of time.
