View Full Version : Wondering: Why the staggered release?

I forget why exactly the staggered release dates exist.

I recall when AEP shipped. It was claimed that the US market was more lucrative if I recall.

Now the US gets to wait. OK, North America.

I am wondering about why though. It seems to me that since the last staggered release was so hotly disliked that Ubi would have learned from that.

I must assume that there is a solid, good reason for UbiSoft to choose a staggered release, and just as valid a reason to pick one region over another as choice of first release.

I just can't figure out that reason. It seems to me that in this world today, we can do some pretty nifty logistical things, but apparently we can't get a product released all over the world all in the same month?

That makes no sense to me.

Can anyone post a reason that a staggered release exists at all?

Could it be that PF, since its a combination of the PTO and high profile a/c types in American lore is therefore far more mainstream than previous titles? Americans do mainstream really well. I think we invented it and Hollywood stole the patent. That was my assumption, FWIW.

Just an idea but all I can think of is that staggered release is due to supply and demand. I think that there will be a greater demand for this product in US so it will take longer for the manufacture and distribution to be set up to cover this area than for percieved demand in europe.

Umm... this argument was used to explain the OPPOSITE with EAP!!

Maybe they know that the US will go over PF with a fine tooth combe because it`s a subject quite close to heart (for obvious reasons) and there will be a resultant hue and cry of inaccurate FMs, DMs, etc, etc... Even if only off by a miniscule amount.

And UBI & Oleg are putting off the volcanic explosion for as long as possible! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif
Er- no, sorry, just kidding! Really! Joke! JOKE!

It depends on the direction of the wind. The CDs are probably made somewhere in Asia. If there's east wind the sailing boat that Ubi hired to ship the boxes reaches Europe first. West winds will favor America.

Maybe a late November release in the US would benefit from the close Pearl Harbor anniversary? And the following festivities.

I reckon that's a good point, Aeronautico.

From UbiRazz, I guess November was a typo! :

"Hi everyone,

PF should be shipping to US retailers on 26th October and will be officially released on the 30th. Of course, certain retailers will put it on the shelves as soon as they get it...

Hope this clears up any confusion"

Festivities? We observe Pearl Harbor day, not celebrate it as a fun 'ol time. In fact, outside of Hawaii, in my expereince Pearl Harbor Day is almost an unknown event. It's like you said "Remember the Maine!" if you mention to someone it's Pearl Harbor day. I made my friends have a Pearl Harbor Day party once, in which you had to dress up in period costume. I assume that it was decided that since N.A. gamers benefitted from an early release it was the European gamers turn. Just an assumption given all the complaining last time.

Whatever the reason there really is no reason why there should be a staggered release. Piracy is a problem. Also, given the theme of the new game it is very odd that it wasn't released in N.A. (and Asia) first, if there were to be a staggered release.

Hopefully B.O.B. will be released at the same time everywhere.

If Ubisoft and Maddox games have a sense of humour, which I've no doubt they do, the last place it'll be released is Britain.

Companies will never learn i guess.

In 1998 the US got most games over a month before Europe.

What happened? Some stores imported US versions of games. The distributing companies in Europe disliked it and demanded actions agains that.

Guess what the counteractions were:
Nope, not releasing the game on one date worldwide... But updates got a check for system settings. If you had a US version of the game running on a non US Windows it would not run. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

I was meaning Christams.

Yes I'm aware it happens here in Europe as well, but I thought that the Pearl Harbor occurrence would rise interest on the title, so that potential buyers can think of it as a gift in the upcoming festivities.
