WoE -- Wings Over Europe -- NATO vs Soviet 1960s to 1970s -- is the latest releace in the StrikeFighers series. Its available for download at the developer's website (thirdwire.com).

You should still find older SF and WoV in stores. I found my SF in the bargain bin at Office Something (one of those big office supply stores).

<span class="ev_code_yellow">WARNING</span>: Out of Box, the SF series to me are frustrating -- with cripplingly slow controls and overly conservative visuals. This all can be radically improved by near infinite customization of the sim. If you are hardcore Classical era jets, including far beyond what is available Out-Of-Box, then find this sim, but be prepared to work to mold it into an amazingly enjoyable look into the past. The chance to work up a classical era SAC vs PVO scenario with a stunning array of 3rd Party mods is why I stopped using FB/PF and got into the SF instead.

And here a very good quality aircrafts to download.

Wings Over Vietnam isn't bad. If you're used to Il-2 you might find it a bit iffy, but if you're one of those happy to mod and tweak, you might love it.

WOV improves a LOT with this addon, even just the first part:

If you want a decent Korea sim, try MiG Alley (old, uglyish, but fantastic), or wait for Luthier's effort.

There are a few downsides to the Strike Fighters series. First, you can't start and shut down engines, it's just not a function that was programmed into the game engine (unless that has changed since I bought WoV). I find this a bit of a realism breaker.

Second, getting online with this series can be a real bear. As far as I know, your install must match the installs of everyone else on the server and even then you might have issues, unless this has changed from past experiences. If you intend to play offline only, then this is a non-issue

Third, it's an open concept sim which is great, but the freeware development has really slowed and Yankee Air Pirate is all payware, so it can get to be a really expensive sim. Buy the sim for $10, spend $95 in add-ons. I don't think this is what TK had in mind when developing the series, but that is what it has become.

Pay attention, Il2 can go the same route if the game code is released to a third party.

I often play Wings Over Vietnam. It is a Fun (big emphasis on FUN) game that will make you love IL2 even more. Where IL2 is more serious, WOV is more like fun. THat is not to say it is easy. The inefectiveness of the Aim 9 and Aim 7 is moddelled just as described by the veterans of that war. Go ahead and buy it, Get in the Crusader and kill 6 or 7 Migs then RTB, what a blast! It cures the IL2, "I get my @ss kicked" blues.
You can mod it for FREE and have fun with it. I just added some terrain I love it. I once modded it so I could fly the Migs. It was great FUN. This sim looks good, plays fun, gets me fired up. Its worth the price of admision.
Here is the King of Battle.

When I was looking for Wings Over Vietnam the cheapest version I could find was the Vietnam Attack Pack (http://www.amazon.com/Vietnam-Attack-Pack/dp/B000FCOIRY/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1200869838&sr=8-2) on Amazon.com. You get WOV and another game together for under $10.

I loaded up WOV a few weeks ago and I agree it is fun. The ground objects are nicely modeled. Seeing Patton tanks, etc. in action is a nice change also. However, IL-2's AI routines, FMs, etc. are more sophisticated.

Other than WoV and Strike Fighters, I can't think of many other post-WWII jet sims that aren't rooted in modern warfare. Rowan's "MiG Alley" was one of the few but that sim is from almost ten years ago.

Project Galba (http://www.rrgstudios.com/) based on Oleg's upcoming Storm of War engine seems to the best hope of a 1950s jet sim. The chances of seeing anything new for the IL-2 series (WWII related or otherwise) now seem officially to be nil.

Wings Over Vietnam looks to be my best bet,mig alley will (demo)not run on winxp and i doubt i can find a 1999 game in store.but wov looks and sounds nice as i am a bf1942 modder,i love tweaking.was kind of a let down in il2 but i understand why,a lot less(no) cheating.i really cant wait to lockon fire a aim9 and KABOOM a mig. my bf thinks i'm a freak for liking this stuff.who cares,i like what i like .

thank you guys for the links and all the help

Hey mnsx275,

Is this 'complete Korea mod' a single package or do I have to dig through all the download areas and put one together myself? I couldn't find a link to a total mod.

01-20-2008, 08:11 PM
It's a complete mod, with an update

Mod here http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?automodule=downloads&showfile=1494

It looks great (thanks for the links) but it says it is for Strike Fighters. I have WoV. Are the games similar enough that I could apply this over WoV instead?

01-21-2008, 03:46 AM
I installed the first pack and it works in Instant Action mode at least. I don't have a Korea map yet so no campaigns but otherwise a nice little package. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

01-21-2008, 04:23 AM
Strange... The Korean War update added a Korea map and now I can play the campaigns but for some reason the Instant Action feature won't work.

01-21-2008, 05:55 AM
1st question: SF and WOV and WOE are almost exactly alike. Each has a different terrain focus, and slightly different planeset. WoV added carriers, but if you kept SF patched up, you got carrier support there as well.

With those being the only differences, when a mod calls for the copying of desert.cat from sfp1, you can use vietnam.cat form your terrain folder. The CAT file contains infrastructure objects, runways, buildings etc...so yours works just fine.

Question 2: Sounds like you didn't get the terrain functional during the first install

Question 3: You have Korea now, but no instant action? See CAT file shuffle above....

Hope that helps...

01-21-2008, 01:32 PM
Well that kind of makes sense; if after the first patch there was no Korea map then the game was using VietnamSEA map and its CAT file. I looked in the new Korea folder and there is no security catalog folder...do I just copy the VietnamSEA file into it or do I have to rename it also?

I'll try copying it over now...

01-21-2008, 01:41 PM
I can't figure it out. Copying VietnamSea.cat over doesn't fix. Renaming it to Korea doesn't fix. Deleting the Korea terrain folder completely doesn't restore the ability to play Instant Action over default Vietnam. This is confusing because all the update added was the Korea terrain folder and an updated campaign folder.

I love the jet aircraft from the 60s (along with the music and movies of that era) and this has really got my attention. I was wondering, does it support Track IR?

01-21-2008, 06:08 PM
skycat 2:

Follow all installation instructions, then open your korea.ini file in the korea terrain folder, replace CatFile=..\Desert\Desert.cat with CatFile=..\VietnamSEA\VietnamSEA.cat

that oughta fix ya

Warringberg wolf....yup, supports trackIR

01-21-2008, 06:52 PM
Well no luck. Even reinstalling everything in the same order that I did before isn't bringing back either Instant Action or Campaign, and at least last night I had one or the other. Now I have neither.

01-22-2008, 05:46 AM
Skycat: I'll do a completely new Korea install for WoV this evening, and post any deviations from the instructions. Will that help? I know modding can be tricky and frustrating... at least until you are familiar with the process...

P.S. It is Warrington, not Warringberg.

5DOF TrackIR support.

Warrington Wolf, my apologies, dunno how I got that wrong.

Skycat, I had no issues installing the mod to a new, dedicated install of WoV.

The message boards at combat ace.com may be helpful. Best of luck! LEt me know if there's anything I can do to help.

Thanks for looking into this on your end. I think I've got the mod working now but I haven't fully tested the campaign yet but at least Korean War appears as an option now. Here's where I was going astray:

1. "Instant Action" -- I was confusing this with "Single Missions" because I remembered I could choose the aircraft and mission type. This is contradictory to both IL-2's Single Mission option and to the CFS series' Instant Action mode. So, simply choosing Instant Action instead of Single Mission was causing CTDs...

2. "Instant Action" revisited -- Once I figured out the above, I decided to ignore the instructions with the Korean War mod that say to delete all of the stock aircraft first. Now if I launch the Instant Action I'll be in a Phantom over Vietnam instead of looking at an "WoV.exe failed" notice on my desktop. If I select Single Mission I can choose from any of the Vietnam or Korean war planes and either of the maps. (I recommend keeping a separate WoV install, especially if you have Yankee Air Pirate, because the Korean mod makes changes to the squadrons list, mission templates and loading interface).

I don't know why the Korean War campaign wasn't appearing as an option after my previous attempts to install. I have it now though. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
