I moved to Nottinham about a month ago, and while idly browsing wikipedia I noticed and article about the East midlands airport. It said that a parking area around the airport had several interesting aircraft parked there, such as a Vulcan, a spitfire replica and a Whirlwind. Anyone ever seen this place, and it it worth going to?

It'll be a Westland Whirlwind helicopter - not the beautious twin-engined work of art we all know and love.

I'd hate for you to get your hopes up. A Vulcan's always worth a look, though, and you can never see too many Spitfires.

I once spent about 20 minutes wandering about under a Vulcan (in NEAM near Sunderland Nissan). It was an awesome sight ... a serious amount of stuff going on in the wheel wells etc ....doesnt bear thinking about the amount of money involved in running one of those 'back in the day' or restoring one today. If they let you inside the thing Id probably still be there...!

If you zoom in on this map you can see them:

Castle Donington was an RAF ww2 base, dont know much about it though. Also nearby there was the Spitfire base at Burnaston (now a Toyota factory), the bomber command OTU base at Church Broughton, another OTU base at Ashbourne (near to me) where a lot of the Arnhem glider pilots trained - a lot still remains of the runway and so on, you can see it here:

If you are interested in other old airfields in the area I can recommend "Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire airfields in the 2nd world war" by Robin J. Brooks.

Lol. It`s funny seeing East midlands as a thread title, considering that`s where I live! East Midlands is probably unheard of around the world...

yup, it's not bad, the Aeropark is actually on the Castle Donington side of the Airport and has a viewing bank that sits you above fence height and gives you an unrestricted view of the main runway.... The whirlwind in question is a Helicopter, no versions of that other item exists today..

For details see

Ok dependant on transport (you can get a bus there), other places of interest next to the Airport is Donington Park Racetrack and the huge racing car collection...

You are actually quite well placed, out towards Newark you have the

keep going further past Newark and you hit something that you will enjoy. where dependant on time of year you will see the Spits Lanc and Dak of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight...

Not promising anything OK, but give it to the summer then remind me and I might be able to sort you a visit and sit in a live Spitfire.... I have done this once before for someone from here, this is a one off ok, so no list of requests please from anyone else..
