"RUSE is easily the best RTS on consoles and I encourage you to give it a shot if you enjoy strategy games"

Taken from a forum:

RUSE is really good....
It is the best RTS on consoles...but there is a key reason why. The game play is slow compared to other RTS games. Battles unfold at a pace that allows the game pad to be useful and not a hinderance. And when I say its slow...that isn't a bad thing.

I have long held that the biggest issue facing RTS games on consoles is that they are ports of PC RTS games that use mouse and keyboard and allow for a fast paced RTS. Consoles by default (not counting Move or Keyboard/mouse support) use gamepads. Gamepads are great devices but lack the precision and speed of mouse and keyboard.

Developers have always tried to fix the issue by doing hot key mapping and menu wheels, etc... Reality is they just needed to slow the pace of unit movement down and allow gamepad users time to make decisions with the gamepad and enjoy it and not feel like they are being run over cause the gamepad is too slow.

RUSE may not be the perfect RTS...but it is the best one on consoles. I think it even bests Halo Wars which is saying alot given I think that was to date the best effort on Consoles. Halo Wars however suffered from the same issues all other RTS games do.

I think its also worth noting that instead of a fog of war that most RTS's use, RUSE doesn't. It has game play elements that let you fool and disquise movements that is brilliant for RTS games. I was so happy not to have to deal with the this huge section of the map is black game mechanic. I always laughed at that too... I mean most of the RTS games deal with Space Marines and high tech warfare and yet somehow nobody had a satalite that could see the whole battlefield?

RUSE...an excellent pick up for the RTS fan.

Couldent agree more !!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Totally agree regarding the slow pace making the console controllers work.

My wife purchased the PS3 version for me (rather than the PC)and at 1st I was a little sceptical - didn't help that reading the FAQ it said 8 players online (for consoles & PC) but on the back cover it said 4 so I was expecting yet another half baked PC C&C conversion.

After playing a number of skirmish games last night I'm really impressed and Eugene should be congratulated developing what is most likely the 1st officially working console RTS game.

I just hope they support it with plenty of skirmish / multiplayer maps or offer a map editor as with C&C games.

Really enjoy this genre. Been playing them since the very 1st (though I'm not that good at it) and RUSE is a great addition.

1st RTS.. guesses?.. here's a pic:

Agree that Move is epic - although to suggest that it's 'slow', when the time scale is clearly ridiculously accelerated is just a sign that RTS games have, over time, devolved into accelerated-time twitch click games, with about as much strategy as Kanye West has class http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif. They're not terrible, but they focus more on 'twitching' than strategy, and if I want twitch I'll play CoD or Resistance 2 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif.

RUSE, on the other hand, is epic - it's a great balance between the 'twitch' audience for many RT'S' games, and actual strategy (although, as for most RT'S' games, it's actually far more tactical (I'm sometimes dissapointed that so-called 'strategy' fans often don't know the difference http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif If you want real RTS, try some of Paradox's offerings http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif), but that's still good with me - RUSE does accelerated-time tactics really, really well - nice work Eugen, love your work http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

PS - great to see Move support as well - it makes the game far more enjoyable to play http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

PPS - I would _so_ pay for more operations/MP maps http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

RUSE is indeed great, but so are Red Alert 3 and EndWar, which also work well on consoles. RUSE suffers more than Red Alert 3 in my opinion when it comes to micro-management in a big pitched battle.

But the titular ruses add a welcome strategic depth that the other games are lacking.

First off, great review, I like how you stomped down on the bad reviews, because what you write about the fps fanboys are kinda true, RUSE needs more time than your average... other game :P

I just wanted to point out that while I haven't tried 2v2 ranked on consoles, it works fine to team up with friends on the PC.

Aye, Endwar and RA3 were good fun and top quality as well, but (and this may just be because of playing it with Move) I find the game more enjoyable to play. While Endwar and RA3 were great, it was often a bit of a struggle with the camera/controls, and Move just makes things that much smoother.
