View Full Version : gun battle with destroyer

have you ever had a gun battle with a destroyer? I had one yesterday. I just got finished attacking a convoy and this one destoryer wouldn't stop looking for me even though the convoy was long gone out of sight. I decided to start shooting at it with my deckgun. I would surface about 3000 meters away from it and go flank speed and fire at it.

After crash diving a couple times and flooding. I finally succeeded in stopping it's engines and then sinking it. All that done with only a loss of about 30% hull integrity.

I've tried it with smaller destroyers/boats once. Once I was heading straight at the target, and before I knew it, it was way too close. The boat rammed me hard, killing all aboard. I usually dont engage on the surface.

Blastomatic or bladrics mate did it once and had vidio to prove it.

I have had a similar experiance. A while ago I was on patrol, simply searching for merchant ships, when I encountered a destroyer in the dead of night! It was running the same direction as me, and the sea was calm, so I could keep up with it. It was about 6000M-7000M away. I was on ahead standard. I had the crew man the deck gun and fire. The destroyer took a few hits to the hull. I on the bridge watching the attack, when I heard a huge "BOOM" and a flash of light. The destroyer overshot me, and it only took a few shots to catch on. The shots were coming VERy close now, I even took a few hits. I decided to crash dive, but the destroyer took me out when I was diving.

I don't advise to attack Destroyers with Deck Guns!

only destroyer I cant seem to kill with gunfire is the VW for some reason, most everthing else can be killed especially if you start firing YOURSELF moving at slow or med speed while firing from as far away as 6k-6.5k at high zoom use one minute of lead to aim with if you are port or starboard of the target, once the destroyer turns into you it makes it much easier to destroy at about 3-4k using HE
HINT: watch the 88 barrel move up and down ,,only fire when the barrel or bow of the sub has moved DOWN, otherwise you will be overshooting the target and get updates on distance to target from the WO EVERY 3 rounds you fire, also the closure will be about 100mtrs for every 3 rounds fired assuming your WO is gun rated, so depress your gun accordingly.
Also keep your bow towards the target, makes it ALOT harder for them to hit you, just use the + key to do so.

On light and med fog days you can usually put 6-10 rounds on a destroyer before he figures out where you are if you start firing as soon as possible once the wo spots him.

If you find yourself in a close quarter gunbattle with a destroyer use AP rounds on the stern using waterline targeting and that will disable its rudders and propulsion giving you a very good chance of destroying its main guns before he can really do you alot of damage instead of fighting it in a highspeed circle.

If the DD starts zigging coming right at you, aim for the stern with HE to disable its rear guns (hopefully you disabled its front firing guns from 3k or so by then)

Hunts, C class and Tribals blow up easy using the 3-4k HE rule. The Flower corvetts and armed trawlers cant seem to hit anything with their main gun untill they are about 2k away so you can pretty much have it your way with them.

Only time I use AP is to disable larger destroyers rudders and engs.

Dont waste ammo on hull shots doesnt seem to do anything for me at least.

Aim for the bridge on long shots, I get the most early kills using that tactic, sometimes in as few as 4-5 hits using HE.

in-game it could be fun and even effective. but it would be suicide in real life. i never attempted it, because i don't try to do things i wouldn't do in real life, thats what makes me enjoy sims http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

So you would join a sub during ww2 if u could http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Tried it once, was bored and wanted to se what would happen... got rammed big time and sunk... there where no survivors...

well you wouldnt think a destroyer or a tiger tank could be destroyed or disabled by 50calibre gunfire either but its been done on more than one occasion in real life...

But obviously a sub vs destroyer in real life on the surface with the sub using its deck gun only would be pretty stupid of the sub commander to try and do.

The stories of Tiger tanks being disabled with 50 calibre are just stories, myths, urban legends http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Heard it all before, like planes walking the bullets to ricochet off the road to hit the underside of the tank,,,, http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

taken 1 vw and 1 armed trawler with the deck gun before.

the trawler was easy.

from the dd i took a direct hit and thought id be gone, but he missed alot as i kept zagging to his zigs.

i scored quite a few he hits but never any concentrated enough.

i swerved out of the way just intime to avoid a ram and switched to the aa and left the deck to the ai.

i proceeded to kill the crew members on deck with the aa while my crew landed shot after shot into it. their big guns couldnt depress that far since we were so close.

i blew up the depth charges with the aa and then it sank.

this was on the ferry trip from whilhelm to brest.

never did it again.

I got locked up broadside with a Hunt I on patrol once and neither of us could fire at the other. I matched his speed and stayed along side shouting insults at the crew when I noticed he was taking damage along the other side and returning fire. Turns out there was another escort_I think it was another Hunt but I can't recall-and these two escorts where pounding the snot out of each other! I was in hysterics watching this truly odd event unfold right before my eyes; so much so I forgot to take snapshots. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif Eventualy the Hunt I was stuck to sunk the other escort and the two of us continued our little dance while I tryied to think of how I was going to get out of this things way without taking to much fire at point blank rage. I ended up putting it back emergency and swinging my deck gun at its aft turrent and blowing it away before she could level down on me. Then I just contiuned chucking shells into her stern until she went down! I mentioned this once before but its been a while since then and I had forgotten about it until I read this thread. Ohh and incase anyone is wondering how I got in that situation in the first place I surfaced right in its path and it tried to ram my boat but only grazed down the starboard side. Those destroyers can be pretty foolish sometimes huh?

Flower corvets are sitting ducks for the deck gun - if you sneak up behind them, they have no rear guns (only mg)in the time it takes them to turn around you can deal them about 2 shots or so, giving you a head start.
Its a fair fight really. The flower pretty much has the same armamment as your U-boat, they are faster, but your Boat is a small and tricky target.

Yesterday evening i intercepted a convoy.

There was a destroyer about 2000 kms away and
was heading to me.
I choose heading 350, took the gun and blasted
him away. I hadn`t any damage.

So this evening i have the time to take out the
whole convoy. (destroyed 2 destroyers with torps)

By the way i play this game realistic.

i find the best time to irritate them with the deckgun is at night or right at dusk. and around 3000 meters or more. theres no way i would attempet it in the day time , but ive smoked a few at night , i always laugh when that first shell impacts and you see all those searchlights come on. and nothing sinks quicker from deckgun fire than the flowers. (well armed trawlers , but they dont count)but for some reason at night , they become all kinda confused at night when you hit 'em a few times. that and i never run at flank speed toward them , i usually keep it right at 1/3 , that way you dont have to keep adjusting the deckgun as much because your distance will sorta remain the same.

I like to sneak up behind escorting Flowers and hitting them from 3k, then throwing the boat in reverse so it keeps the range steadier and puts some distance between you and the DDs you know are coming!

finally killed a VW dd in Gibraltor yesterday, I snuck in underwater and surfaced at the N cove of the channel to refresh the air supply and run in circles to charge the batteries, while doing so a VW had me 4200mtrs off his starbord in lite/med fog so I just pointed my bow at him and got range from WO and proceded to plaster him with HE at the bridge area 3 rounds then 6 rounds on the rear guns and 5-6 on the front deck, he then turned to port and by then I was only 3.2k away with his stern at 00 to me so I just plastered his **** with HE and he finally exploded after about 8 hits. Usually I blow every gun and machined gun off them and they keep chasing me with DCs if I submerge and ram me on the surface or I just leave them disabled and gunless on the surface to be torpedoed at my leisure, not this time though.
