One port that drives me nuts is Bergen..as t hey couldn't make it more difficult to navigate out of http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

St. Naizaire. Easy in and out, no need to slow down compression
worst is lorient, which pissed me off cuz i loved IX's but i had to sit there for 15 minutes while lack of time compression kept me from getting out of base

Brest is the best. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif I mean you can crashdive in the port!

Yes, I've heard that before somewhere, "Breast is Best".

You're right about Bergen, though it's in a difficult place to bomb from the air - that was once done by the RAF with great loss of innocent lives. Anyway, it was the Germans in the first place that made Bergen such an important point - Google "Hanseatic League".

Trondheim is almost as difficult to get in and out of, but it would have saved a lot of time for boats heading for the Arctic Convoys.

St Nazaire is a straight run in and out, though it's shallow for a long way into the Bay. I think you can just set full ahead and not bother with plotting a course before you go. I don't seem to have used Lorient much and I've not been into Brest - well, not in the game, that is.

Kiel is difficult because of the islands of Denmark or the Kiel Canal. I can't remember if Cuxhaven or Bremerhaven are part of the game.

What is the Kiel Canal? I think I saw it in a screenshot and went looking for it but never found it. Does it open up later in the game?

I've only used 2 ports so far; Wilhelmshaven & Lorient. I like the subpens @ Lorient, but it is (notoriously) difficult to navigate in & out of. Wilhelmshaven doesn't seem so bad, but again, I've not been able to compare it to anywhere other than Lorient. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

So far, I've only operated for 2nd flotilla.

@Liddabit
Sorry, I can't answer your question. Maybe someone else can.

I don't like Wilhelmshaven due to a very long detour around England to reach the infamous AM-51-53 grids. Same goes for Kiel, times 4.

Brest is good, St.Nazaire wins top points for me. L'orient is not bad, you just need to adjust time compression in land proximity to 64x in .cfg files or Commander.

La Spesia is very good, but I don't really like the Mediterranean too much. Bordeaux is decent.

I love Bergen just for the sole fact that it is near the Arctic convoy routes, and has the XXI boat http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

@ Liddabit, Kiel Kanal is found in GW mods. In tock game you need to go around Denmark. This is why I dont like that port. Btw, I love that song too http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

so far Brest is winning! however, manny other ports are coming up from behind!

heres my pick: http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif1st: S.t Nazaire pros: the port is easy in, easy out. cons: lacks many good U-boats.

brest i don't find too bad cause i FINALLY figured an easy way out. unfortunatly, by the time I get 300,000 renown http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif for the XXI, the war will be over.
by the way, is there a way you chould stop BDu from giving me those AE patrol areas, there driving me bonkers! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

I like St. Nazaire the best for the easy in and out. However, Brest is a close second. If you plot things just right you can get out with time compression.

Lorient is horrible! Sometimes I think my boat won't even fit through some of those tight spaces.

Kiel takes forever to get out and around. Wilhelmshaven is alright. Didn't mind it that much.

Overall, I love St. Nazaire, even if it is shallow.

You need 30,000 renown, not 300,000. I am in December 1940 and I have 27,000 already, including purchase of 7,500 renown IXb boat and upgrades for it. Not too bad at all. Turn up your realism settings.

Get SH3 Commander, and assign your own grids (I like EC and ED ones in the Caribbean http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif It does take forever to get there tho...)

Besides, you can always transfer out of L'Orient if you don't like it. I don't mind it, at 64x time compression it takes about 25-30 seconds real time for me

I went to Lorient for about three patrols, got my IXC and headed back to St. Naizaire. I still get the long patrols, but kept a great boat with easy in and out of the port.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/agreepost.gif You too huh? I love the fact that you can bring your boat and crew with you when you transfer.

My vote goes to 7th Flotilla, St. Nazaire, for aformentioned navigational ease... but only after I've picked up my IXC from Lorient! Long patrols, yes, but I've learned that I can come close to making up the renown with the tonnage I'll sink in the AM grids, and, to me, the shorter patrols are worth any renown loss.

Kiel's a hike, but has the advantage of the VIIB, which means your crew, assuming they survive, have equal experience levels even when you pick up a new boat (since you don't have to add crew if you don't want to). That's my early war choice.

Call me crazy but I went to the 2nd Flotilla, grabbed my trusty IXC, and then transferred to the 13th/29 Flotilla in the Mediterranean. I simply claim "ownage" to the Task Forces that sail in-between Sicily and Africa.

It's just those pesky aircraft reminds me of annoying mosquitoes that try to siphon the life out of you is what I have to contend with!

Edit: I used to enjoy doing this... WHEN MY SH3 w/GWX WAS WORKING!!! (see My Copy of GWX 1.02 = CTD thread) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
