View Full Version : Any reccomended mods/additions for PF?

Engine noise is kind of lame, but other than that, things look/sound good. Just wondering if there's any recommended mods/additions (sounds, graphics, planes, objects, etc)?

Am I right in understanding that there may not be much modding/additions to PF (aside from official patches from the makers)?

No mods, at least of the type you are looking for. the entire sim is 'closed' in that regard, mostly for purposes of online play.

Things like external programs that work with the sim are available, they do things like manage skins and so forth

In addition, aircraft skins are available for all aircraft in the sim, some of them are so good it takes the basically very good looking planes and makes them look like the real thing. Graphically, I's suggest worrying about your hardware being able to deliver the goods and let you see the graphics as they should be displayed, rather than worrying about poor graphics in this sim http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

This isn't even the best quality for water, and the pic is compressed:

Some skins look like photos, CanonUK's work:

One of my favorites (all these are uneditted shots)

those aren't even at highest resolution

If you are using onboard sound, an Audigy 2 sound card will make the ingame sounds alot better. If you are using an Audigy 2 sound card already and think the ingame sounds are lame, I guess it is your ears doing the interpeting m8. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Hi, Chuck_Older. Ya, I'm certainly not knocking PF's graphics... Initially, I wasn't impressed (as the water was not being rendered properly... more like just a blue solid), but once I found the proper driver/settings, it's looking very sweet (animated, reflections, sand underwater on shores, etc). I was just curious if there was any mods/additions that further added to it. Being a Grand Prix Legends user, I certainly know the power of user-made mods!

Wow, the harbour pic expecially looks nice! My water looks like that too (sweet....). Haven't seen that kind of harbour detail, though. Where's that located? Is that new graphics (if so, what's been changed), or the standard PF graphics?

Hi, -HH-Quazi... It's really the engine noise that I find disappointing. Sounds very much like IL2 planes... that sort of 'lawnmower' sound. I'm by no means an expert on aircraft motors, but I did find it odd that an IL2 and a corsair seemed to be using the same sound... which (to untrained ears like mine) didn't sound too much like an airplane. Interiors sound fine, but the flyby sounds like the same noise is used for every plane. My PC is using the sound from my ATI motherboard (soundmax digital?). And that's going through a Layla 32 to my quad speakers (I run a midi studio here too). Regardless, it's not the 'quality' of the sound (the bullet hits to the players plane are shockingly 'present'... very nice!), but the sound itself (of the flyby engine noise, specifically). I know I've read at least one other post claiming the engines don't sound like airplane engines... but, as with the graphic mods, I'm simply asking if there's anything out there 'to add to the experience'...

'Hey' to FoolTrottel...

BTW, I totally understand and appreciate the reasoning between not allowing 'non-standardized' modifications/additions for the sake of a unified, smooth online experience... It's just a shame you can't mod things for offline play. I play exclusively offline (...I'd get my butt kicked online in PF...).

The sounds in this game are very so-so. This is not a deal breaker for me by any means, but sampled sound from real aircraft would be nice. A great example of this would be GT Legends, IMO. The race cars sound like... race cars.

As far as the hardware making a big difference, well, I have come and gone from this game since the original IL-2, and played the game through generic onboard sound, a Soundblaster Live!, an Aureal Vortex 2, and now an Audigy 2. It sounds the same on any of them.

(Amonst) The best add-ons for this sim are the Pluswave titles, they incrporate masses of ground objects that usually are left out in the campaign missions.

There are also plenty of user-made missions - look at the mission-builder forum by clicking on the 'home' symbol at the top of the page.

Another GPL fan http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif That harbor is (mostly) on my hard drive. The basic harbor is on the Kuban map, it's in the large bay to the South. However, I have placed a few objects there. It uses strictly objects available in the sim (you can't import or change any objects, either) to put more detail into the scene. It's actually not all that complex a scene, really, I was just showing off some of the lower-setting water effects. There's much, much more detailed stuff that others (and I) have done. One of the best things about the sim is that users can make campaigns and missions using tools in the sim. You can hand-place thousands of objects if you spend the time.

Check out this thread for even cooler stuff made by mission/campaign makers:

Chuck_Older... Nice!! That's the kind of stuff I'm looking for. Sadly, I've found the IL2 series has excellent landscape, but a little sp**** on the detail/objects... they really add to the emersion and gee-wiz factor... plus give you some fun ground attacks.

A shame you can't modify the core map (with additional static objects) so that all missions (including those done in the QMB) will have the new detail included.

I'll definitely take a look.

GPL is great... Finally, a racing sim with a proper feeling of weight and inertia... That frequent wicked feeling of 'yikes, I'm going too fast for this corner!'..... and it really was born again in a big way with the user mods. I was totally impressed with that, and glad to have it back on my system again.

Wilburnator... Ya, I agree with you. Dissappointing engine sounds (actual noise, not the quality of it), but definitely not a show stopper. Even my girlfriend commented from across the room that they sound like lawnmowers. A nice throaty engine sample would be sweet... especially a nice roar for the flyby. Again, I am far from an expert on what they SHOULD sound like, but I did find it odd that bombers and fighters all seem to share that same sound.

On the subject of GPL, just listen to the Ferari... Now THERE'S an example of what a good engine sound can do! If GPL can do it, so many years ago, the IL2 engine should be able to as well...

The sound in this sim benefits from a lot of tweeking.
Use of hardware acceleration and many other settings
have been explored adnauseum. Not much talk lately
as most probably have sorted out the setting for their
box. Maybe do a search in the community help forum.

I know it would be a 'wasteful' use of CPU power, but I would REALLY love for there to be people scattering out of attacked buildings... Just a random graphic thing (don't bother with being able to shoot them, etc). It would make ground attacks really exciting and frantic.

I recall one older flight sim did that (WWI biplane sim)... as well as birds sometimes scattering out of trees (...I am not saying they should do birds in PF... just people). Airbases should trigger random 'runners' after one building is hit.

The people running out of attacked cars is nice...
