I took data from http://users.accesscomm.ca/magnusfamily/ww2ger.htm
about LW WWII aces, and looked at the statistics each year for aces lost due to death or capture (a lot of aces were lost due to serious wounds but this site does not seem to register this info). Then for each year I counted the # of aces lost, and the average number of victories for these lost aces:

year avg # victories # lost
45 27.97 147
44 23.32 562
43 28.77 380
42 21.03 248
41 14.22 126
40 8.05 86

As expected, the number of experienced pilots lost increased each year from 40 to 44. The trend of average victories stops increasing after 43. This seems to coincide with the idea that as a military force, LW losses were "sustainable" until mid '43/ early '44.

BTW this only took 15 minutes to do.

1944 seems to be the year that the luftwaffe got the final blow
