He`s just emphasising how good the demo must be, obviously not so good that you`d need to do that. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Or is it? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif D\Ling now!

Some hi-res shots from the movie:

Scott from Shockwave on the sounds..sums it up nicely I think:

What`s wrong with my ears? I`ve watched the movie, but I didn`t think the sounds were that much better than IL2. The MG`s shooting sounds were equally weak to me. The sound got better when coming into to land, but nothing to go crazy about... maybe it`s my computer sounds settings, or maybe I had IL2 setup better soundwise so that BOBII doesn`t sound as effective?

Thankfully, sound isn`t everything and I`m still very excited from what I saw. Definitely looking into getting it in a week.

Yes...sound is one place Oleg really underacheived in his sim...you can only experience this sim through sight and sound...maybe a little feel if you have force feedback...but sound really sets the emotional mood or tone of the game.

Lousy music, poor sounds and really bad voice actors dubbing in leave the level of immersion a notch lower than it could be....the best sound i've ever heard was in Janes WWII fighters...this could be better!

Sounds are fantastic. Cockpit is top notch. Clouds look better than PFs. Ground looks worse.

Nice attention to detail.

It does indeed look pretty.

I like the degrees of freedom for the pilot's head, might even be able to see around the seat-back...

The little details like the start procedure do wonders for immersion, although I don't hold much hope for it's flight model vs. IL's. Also no multi-player is pretty much a show stopper for me, there's nothing better than flying with friends.

Guess i`m deaf then, anyway, I like the immersion of the knob-twiddling at start up. After transferring to flying full-real 3 years ago, this just seems the next logical step.

Of course, many won`t like it; I remember someone complained once about having to crank the handle for the gears of the I16.

I`m interested in seeing how the FM`s will be compared to IL2, but I don`t think it`ll be far wrong. When I tried the original many years ago (it seems), I was put off because my Spit kept veering off to the left and crashing. I thought the game was buggy - now I realise I simply never understood that this was how real torque acts on an aircraft in those days.

Good point SeaFire.

Devs need to find a way to get basic aviation knowledge to the Newbie flight simmer, or flight sims will remain Niche Status forever.

Something other than the never read Readme file.

Something besides burying it inside the stuttering lagging PDF file or the tiny manual.

Devs must put basic aviation education up front IN THE GAME -- one click away from the basic game menu, and a click that will attract the Newbie's interest and attention.

Something that says, as Oleg always posts...

Well, someone from Shockwave _did_ say that their FMs are comparable to IL-2's, i.e. not perfect but still OK. Which means that I'm gonna buy this game http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

One of the things that has dissapointed me with the upgrades and patches we've had (good though they are) is that as far as I can see they affect only new planes/flight models; there's been no patches/upgrades to the game it's self; and even worse; the patches have broken somethings that were revolutionary to IL-2; such as the training tracks.

The training tracks were a really good idea; and some kind of flight school is going to be decidely effective the more realism increases in these types of games.

Even Need for Speed includes a driving school chapter; and I'd have thought a basic flight school "campaign" the obvious way to go.

And in a perfect world; having been through flight school; each and every plane type modelled would have at least one single mission as a type conversion; showing where the gauges are; when one changes supercharger settings and so on.

Taking Seafire's point about torque; imagine how frustrating it's going to be for a newbie to transition from a Merlin Spit to a Griffon Spit: They rotate in opposite directions and with out a few clues from the game; the cries of "bug!" would be deafening as every one careers off the runway to the right instead of left....

Yea, BOB lost a sale from me at the time (I took it back to the store).

I think these realistic flight sim-makers really have missed an obvious point that could bring in many new sim-flyers:

Don`t treat us like idiots with unreal arcade fms, and don`t just plonk down a complex FM with nothing(or nearly nothing) for the new user to learn from ...simply explain the reality of historically true FMs with clear and straight forward, easy to access instructions, preferably graphically illustrated. It`s 5 years too late for me, but it would help future new users. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I dont think it looks all that good from what I saw.

I didn't like thee ground textures, thought that the sound was about the same as we have.

I really aprove of all the startup proceedure, and it looks like you have to fight her to keep her straight on takeoff, like that!

I'll try it out, but may not buy it. On the fence so far.

Well... from what I have saw I predict that the BoB will be interesting game. But for more than that is very hard to tell in this moent, after seeing the video.

One shouldn't conclude anything based on a short, low-resolution movie - agreed.

However, the sounds are same/similar as IL-2? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Thought you boys were serious for a moment. One thing I quickly noticed was the difference in engine sound when the cockpit was closed/opened. Unless my version of IL-2 is broken, whenever I open/close the cockpit (on what planes we have that do this) there's no difference - just that "static" noise that I suspect is trying to act for wind.

From what I read early on, never having played the original, it seemed like a good offline campaign experience with a whole lot more strategy which I personally like. But it would be weak for the actually flying.

However, I am certainly encouraged that this aspect will be better than I imagined. The detailed cockpit, and the immersion presented in that short clip was very good. Heck, British voices and a cleaner text presentation to boot!

If anything this clip has me thinking that maybe the Vector Expansion WILL NOT be that critical, at least unlikely to be key for dogfighting. But it would add a little to immersion nonetheless.

Will wait until the gamer reviews come after release, but this looks very promising for offliners. If they later decide to have an addon for online play, well this could be a very interesting series.

LoL, the sounds in IL2 series are mediocre at best, the folks that think the sounds are good need a serious hearing test. I like the IL2 series but it may just have to scoot over especially with the driver issues lately. It was good while it lasted though i'll give it that. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Just curious - does this BOB from Shockwave have a recording feature similar to IL2's .trks and .ntrks?

Mr. Canuck,
According to Rowans original game manual there is a feature called 'replay':

'If you chose replay from the main menu, the replay screen is displayed. On the replay screen you should select the desired footage. A list of previously displayed replay files will be displayed....most of the usual view keys are available using the function keys. No cockpit views are available, because they are not part of the recording.'

The new version of BoB should at least have the above function. You can edit the length of the saved track file at a later time. You can also fast-forward, pause, and rewind during track replay. I don't know what format tracks are saved in.

Also - GUN CAMERA FUNCTION:

'There are several ways to record footage. The simplest way is to set the Gun Camera option in the SimConfig/views screen to 'on'. This will record the mission from start to end; setting the option to 'Trigger' will record when the player shoots or drops a bomb, and then for a limited time after firing has ceased (10 seconds for guns, 1 minute for bombs). The player can also toggle the gun camera on/off using the 'c' key. Both this and the recording 'on' triggger will concentrate the recorded pieces during the same mission together into a single replay file for that mission. It is possible to throw away all current footage and begin (recording) again by pressing 'x''.

So it seems that you can set the game up to record EVERY time you fire your guns, recording only these parts of the mission!! a very nice function if you want to analyse your marksmanship.

That was a good question, Old_Canuck and a surprising answer, major_setback. I never stuck around with BOB to see this stuff (my impetuous dumb youth, I guess). I really like the idea of a realistic `operates when you shoot` guncam.

If these features are in BOBII then I can`t wait (but I will http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif).

The simple fact that it supports 6DOF and a 3D clickable Cockpit is worth the price of admission to me.

Guys I"m probably going to buy it. Mostly to support the different developers in this hobby. It will not replace Il2-FB/PF as my main World war 2 cambat flight Simulator.

The main reason is that its base on only one Battle and World war two was a true global war.

Thanks to Oleg and Paul Lowengrin DCG program now I can fly fight in almost all the Theaters that where involved in the war.

All it needs its few Pacific planes to make it a near perfect World war 2 flight Simumulator.

Thank you Lowengrin and Oleg and your team.
