View Full Version : Some questions before i buy Battle over Europe

I'm thinking about buying the Battle over Europe add-on, but first some questions:

Since i'm an offline DGen campaign fan, i ofcourse wonder if the planes.dat and classes.dat files(if such exist for the BoE campaigns)can be altered so that i can choose from more planes/missiontypes than i can "out of the box". I also wonder if i can change the planetype in the middle of a campaign by tampering with the status.dat file in the "missions/campaign/xxx/pilotandcampaignname"folder like i can with my current setup(4.00m).

I also wonder if "post BoE" planes can be made flyable in the BoE DGen campaigns. And of course about 4.00m compatibility.

If someone has BoE and runs it with 4.00m i'd be glad if someone could do some testing to get above questions answered unless it's currently known. It would be interesting to know if can fly perhaps an A-20,B-25,P-38L or perhaps even a P-38L Late for the U.S campaigns or maybe a He-111 or Ju-87 in the Ardennes.

I'll be running on:
2,8Ghz Pentium 4 processor
512MB RAM
256MB ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card

Answers to the questions and further comments on BoE would be most welcome.

I got BOE and have enjoyed it very much. Best add-on for what I like to fly. The BOE add-on adds a planesXXX.dat file for the Ardennes and its structure is just like the others, so you should have no problem adding planes to it.

Does it add classesXXX.dat files?
Does it add planesXXX.dat files to all the campaigns or just Ardennes?

The planesXXX.dat file corresponds to the region. The BOE adds a planesXXX.dat file with the region Normandy and Ardennes.

You'll have to educate me on the classesXXX.dat file. I've never tampered with them. But - I don't see a Brit class file, at all, in the DGen folder.

In the classesXXX.dat files you can remove the default "role" of a planetype with your own role. If .dat files don't exist they can be created. Many classesXXX.dat files that can be used are not installed by default in the games, so they must be created.

This is how you change the "role" of a plane;
Open(eventually after creating)the proper classesXXX.dat file(XXX should be same as XXX in planesXXX.dat)and add one or more lines;
First you add the internal name of the plane whose role you want to change, then you add one of the following;

FIGHTER = escort, intercept, recon missions
LIGHT = same as fighter, "soft" ground targets like trains can be attacked.
TANK = soft targets + tanks, not antiship or anti bridge.
JABO = scramble, recon and all ground attack missions
ALL = all missions, fighter and ground attack
GROUND = only ground targets, suitable for bombers or ILs

For instance, my classesRuS.dat (Russian Stumrovik career)looks like this;

P_47D10 JABO
P_47D22 JABO
P_47D27 JABO
YAK_9B JABO
I_185M82A JABO
LAGG_3IT TANK
YAK_9T TANK
YAK_9K TANK
YAK_9UT TANK
IL_2Type3M TANK

The fact that "the planesXXX.dat file corresponds to the region" makes me somewhat confused. In FB+AEP+PF i have a planesXXX.dat file for every flyable career where first the internal name of the campaign is written in brackets[ ]. Then under each campaignname are the internal names of the planes flyable in that campaign. For instance, my planesUSP.dat file looks like this;

[Hawaii]
P_40SUKAISVOLOCHB
[NewGuinea]
P_40E
P_40M
P_39D1
P_39D2
P_39N
B_25J1
A_20G
[Japan1]
B_25J1
A_20G
P_51D20NA
P_38L
P_38LLate
P_47D27
P_63C

So, if and when you have the time, could you please fill me in a bit more detailed about how BoE handles the issue.

Planes have default roles built in, so unless you need to modify the default role of an aircraft for a career, a classxx.dat is unecessary.

HA, ha. Actually what I said and what you said are the same thing.

... each planesXXX.dat file corresponds with which planes are available for that region (or campaign) designated in that particular file like - planesRA1.dat file has these planes available for the RAF in Singapore and New Guinea for the Singapore 1942 campaign.

[Singapore2]
HurricaneMkIIb
F2A_B339
[NewGuinea]
BEAU21
P_40E
P_39D1

Actually, you've got it.

Buy BOE and you won't be disappointed. When you get it, there is an update for it on their website, as well. There is also a bunch of great skins included with it.

Cheers,
Rick

Seems good.
I assume it's compatible with 4.00m patch?
Just one final check before i make the final decision. Unless you already know, i'd be very grateful if you could test if the BoE DGen campaigns work with(flyable ofcourse, written here with their "internal names");

A_20G
B_25J1
BEAU21
P_38L
P_38LLate (New with 4.0)
P_51CM (RAF MustangIII,New with 4.0)
BF_110G2
JU_87D5
JU_87G1
HE_111H6

Thanks in advance and thanks for all the info so far.

Yo Tomas_W,

O.K. Hadn't got the time tonight to try'em all but the Mustang III, Spitfire 5c, one of the Stukas, the He 111 all work in campaign when added to BOE added files.

NOTE: There are specific bomber campaigns already in the BOE add-on. Keep in mine, when you add the He 111 to the planesDEx.dat there is a planesXXX.dat file for fighters and a seperate one for bombers. It's very flexible and it can be done. Don't add the He 111 in the fighter file because then you'll get fighter type missions. You'll have to see the files to figure it all out, but the file structure IS unchanged from the original DGen. It's simply expanded.

ps: I'll tell you how much I've enjoyed this add-on. You can fly every Spit there is in Normandy and Ardennes. I'm still doing it and enjoying it greatly. Same with German fighters although I fly 98% Allied so I can't tell you a whole lot about the Axis side.

@ Tomas_W your getting sleepy
@ look into my eyes (.)(.) get out your credit card ond order it @ you won't regret it @ http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

You don't happen to work for Just Flight? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

Maybe you've got some shares in the company? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Well, i've bought it now, so now i'll just sit around and wait for a couple of weeks, or maybe use Time Skip. Thanks again for all the info.

Just kidding with you. But it is a good add-on. I've been hoping there will be more of this quality. Maybe with the new maps and planes someone will do an add-on so we can use them in campaign. Seems like I read somewhere were someone is making an add-on for the Murmansk and Kurland maps. I would love to see North African and Northern Australia campaigns but I'm probably dreaming. At least until some future Oleg Maddox sims plus we need a map for Northern Australia.

Just to wet your appitite you might find my review of BOE here interesting

http://www.airwarfare.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=26&sid...2e5e4af270c4c934b2a1 (http://www.airwarfare.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=26&sid=b2af89bb348a2e5e4af270c4c934b2a1)

I enjoy it and I have a spitfire campaign on the go just now. The Last Days is also very good.

For general support and questions post to starshoy on the simhq forums. He is continuing to support BOE and has added an update for v 4.0 see here

By the way. I saw reference to RAF campaings available in some patch in your review but not much was mentioned about them. Could you elaborate on them. Dates, places and default aircraft?

Do you know how long(in missions)by default the campaigns are?
