Hello all,

I am new to IL2. I have played combat flight sims before (warbirds in mid-90s, MS CFS, etc.) but never that well!

I'd like to start by learning basic flight manouevers. I'm OK at gunnery but need to practice combat flying. So two questions:

1> would you recommend picking one type and flying that for a few months, or fly a few?
2> are there any good tutorials for basic combat techniques?

Thanks in advance http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Check out the 'nugget's guide' in the sticks above you old bean. Do feel free to ask away on any specifics.

Thank you jamesblonde

I think you are wondering how someone like me with poor observation skills will ever survive in the skies?

Red - Take a look at the pdf book at this link:

http://web.comhem.se/~u85627360/ (http://web.comhem.se/%7Eu85627360/)

This is what you need to start learning tactics for offline or online combat later.

Whatever you knew in other sims... carry only the basics over here... Everything is different as far as the flight & damage models... Hit the Nugget's Guide link in my sig... Also the essetials link is a load of sites that are relevent to this sim.

Welcome aboard.

.... Cuda is correct also.. Joint Ops is a good bet... it is also linked in my sig.

If you are looking for a good plane to start with I'd suggest a Hurricane especially the field mod. It has a very forgiving nature easy to fly and that one has 20mm cannon to make shorter work of an opponet in a dogfight.

I would also suggest you try flying as many differnt A/C as possible to find what suits you best, however some aircraft have some traits that make them better for the more expericed pilot. For example, the P-39 was an A/C in real life that was not very popular, because of its lack of a supercharger and funky handling, but the P-400 variant is one of my favorite planes in the game to fly, once you get used to the quirks of various aircraft you can kick butt no matter what you choose.

Welcome to one of the best communities i have ever come across....
What i have found after asking around is the guys here are very helpful, any way they can they will try to guide you.
The a/c i found to be a good starter is the A6M2 or the Hurricane, though after weeks of trying, still cant land the damn things, but hey ho, if at first you dont succeed.....

lol

Watch your rate of descent and use the throttle to control it.

Don't cut back until you want to touch down.

Fly a few diffrent aircraftremeber that the diffrence with IL2 is that it is really close to the real thing as aposed to CFS IL2 really is as real as it gets each aircraft is diffrent the Hurrican is a nice ride and the Spit also the Russen closed cockpit fighters are cool too one thing to remeber when flying is that a few fighers could not do a vertical dive if you are in to fighting like that and you find yourself i one that can't change the campagne and aircraft but all the arcraft are fun.

Good hunting

Welcome from a relative noob! The community here IS great! I too would recommend the hurricane as a first plane, and if you want to force yourself to get good at shooting, the Yak 3 will test you but it's great to fly. I have learnt loads about what must be involved in real flying from this sim and it's really got my interest in flying and war history. Good luck, and watch your six!

Experiment with a few different ones, i still TRY & FAIL with A6M2 & Hurricane after all this time lol, but last night i had a go with the Corsaire (was the shape of the wings) and enjoyed it, but think i would still prefer the Hurricane atm.

There will hopefully be a new target in the skies for ya soon, take it easy please hehe.

Welcome, Redfoxeast. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

You picked a good sim. To give you an idea of the quality of the sim and the community, both have run rapant now for more than seven years. IL-2 has gone from strength to strength throughout the entire period, and has had no equal for the duration, even today.

Endure through the inevitible growing pains of learning how to be competent - let alone good - at this sim, and you will love it!

This is probably one of the few sims ever that has been modded and 2 years after the fact s still a good bet online. That is due primarily to the integrity of the bulk of the community.
