Hi
Wondering what is the best WW1 flight sim currently out there. I used to run Red Barron on an Amiga 500 about 17 years ago & loved it. I am looking for something with a very good single player campaign mode.
I used to love zipping around in the Pfalz D111, Fokker DR1 & DV11 & being able to paint them

Hello,

There are 2 games comming out for Xmas. One is by Third Wire and the other is a free addon to CFS3. From what I have read probably neither is as detailed as PF but the CFS3 addon will support the 6DoF extension to TrackIR3 and perhaps the other will too. Anyway there are lots of stills from both games posted on these forums to look at and from the outside they certainly look impressive. I still think that Maddox should do one though even if 6DoF is not supported.
Regards,
SLP

Strange to say, but Red Baron 3d - if you can find a copy.

Check this site for add-on (Full Canvas Jacket) http://www.plgrafix.com/

Note that if you have an ATI or NVIDIA card in your computer the RB3D game will not run as it did with a 3Dfx (Voodoo) card which supported Glide. As far as I know all the grafical issues have never been addressed.
Best regards,

Yea, for single-player campaign RB3 is still the best I've come across. Even more modern games, like PF, don't quite match it, IMO. And as you're looking at WW1 the choice is pretty limited to start with.

I have to say that the best so far is clearly Red Baron 2/3d. I bought it when it was brand new and if i wouldn't have played it i wouldn't play PF either. Single player campaing is just great, especially if you play it as "dead is dead".

I even tried it in internet a couple of times but in those times broadband internet connections were about five times higher than now and i didn't have one.

I still play RBII regularly and i can recommend it for everyone http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

RedBaron2/3d.......by far. If you look for some FlandersInFlames patches by JG1, and Promised land items you'll also have a rather extensive planeset over and above the sim supplied one.

I have an NVIDA FX 5700 LE 256, So what you are saying is the game will not run? does that apply to all models of Red Baron?

RB3D runs perfectly on my machine (ati...), but you have to use a glide-wrapper like glidos. No problem at all after that.

I (still http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif ) don't have Promised Land, but till I get it, the Hell's Angels-patch is good enough for me.

Dear All,
As regard to the game not running.....it does run but lots of black squares where the ground tiles should be.....also the game keeps switching back to direct draw graphics whilst in game.

I've not had the problem. The glide wrapper (both dgvoodoo or glidos) has run just fine for me on my older ATI 9700 Pro and now my X800.

I find that you need an *extremely* fast computer to smoothly run any of the major graphic upgrades for RB3D in emulated glide.

Actually, it was over a year ago that I found that I couldn't get more than 25 fps in RB3d with upgrades. There might be less of a problem nowadays, but you need a good computer.

IIRC, the black squares thing usually happens when you try to emulate too much memory. RB3D wasn't made for more than 8 meg of graphic memory; forcing it to use more can cause corruption for some reason. Setting your glide wrapper to 4 meg of memory will fix the problem, but will be *slow.*

it's kind of off the topic but there's a WW1 mod in the works for BF2 which could provide some fun arcade style dog fighting in WW1 planes
it's in German but there's the link http://www.battlefield1918.de/news/

I liked Rowans flying corps gold, which had an assortment of colors you could apply ingame. It also had some odd glitches, like Dr1s flying wiht half the top wing gone, but most of the time i thought it was pretty good.

however, i cant get it to run on win xp. Ive seen ohters wiht similiar problems, and i dont know if there is a fix or not.

That mod for BF was awesome. I have a strange obsession with WW1 tanks and the ability to drive the A7V was more than I could ever ask for. Oh, and piloting zeppelins dropping bombs on the front lines was pretty dam fun also!

Just about anything from Dynamix is gold.
All the Red Baron series were incredible.
Aces over Pacific
Aces over Europe
Aces of the Deep - of which was considered the best subsim of all time until SH3(which is virtually a remake with better graphics)

I can vouch for SDOE, you can find some more information here:

http://openplanesim.com/index.php

Although you will need to find a copy of the original game Fighter Squadron.

There is also the Targetware Richthofen Skies

You can find more information here:

http://www.richthofens-skies.com/

There is a lot of information on the updates for Red Baron and it pays to spend a bit of time reading through it as I am sure with some patience you will be able to make it work OK on your system.

This site has some good information about most of the well known WW1 Flight sims.

Hope you find something you like!
