what do you guys think of the p38 in the game.it performs much better than i thought it would as far as turn rate. It seems to be able to take alot of damege and still fly very well even more so than the p47 to me any way. in fact i cant see why the u.s didnt use it more so than it did in europe. it seem like a much better fighter vs fighter than the p47 and if thay would have added a littel more power later in the war would have been just as good as the stang.

The P-38 was very expensive to manufacture and maintain.
Pilots froze their butts off in the P-38 in Europe. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif
To name a couple of reasons.

anyone tried 109Z vs P-38 offline... now thats a tough fight... but could the 109Z really be as effective as it feels... but that 109Z is really really cool, epsecially for bomber killing, it really shows up the old 262 in some ways

Most posters consider the FM pretty accurate. Speed is critical; the "J" has a bad case of compressibility; and dive-brakes on the "L" make it a pretty good turning a/c.

It's all covered in detail in the thread below:

p38 had more power available. just like the jugs you could push the p38 engines alot harder to get more power than is shown in game. A LOT MORE POWER

Lots of posts about the lightning...I'll say this...

I was being chased by a La-7 down low and while I didn't out run him...I kept him at bay long enough to get to my base...I was flying a P-38J. I've also kept even pace with Ki's on the deck so I feel like its got plenty of power...I have a hard time w/ B&Z cause of compressibility and the dive breaks are a little hard to maneuver at high speeds while still staying on target. I like the forward visibility out of the cockpit though...maybe best in the game

Icons were limited so I don't know how far the La came up on me for sure, but I know if I'd been flying a Jug or a mustang I would've been dead meat.

Ps another post claims ammo count is 250rpg instead of the 500 rpg on the .50cals...

I'm posting this even though its on another thread cause I think its real important Oleg sees it and I don't know how else to call it to his attention

Anyone hear whether the gun vibration/dispersion will be fixed?

I ran into 109Zs in a P-38(J?) during a coop mission earlier today. I wasn't expecting the Z model - not paying attention to the briefing I guess. I was quite suprised by the Z's performance, to say the least. It was much more nimble than I expected. I didn't get a lot of observations in as I lost half of my port fuselage right after completing a rocket run on some 110s. And I only got one of the 110s.

I can declare the P-38 to be a Lot Of Fun Online, and give the 109Z recognition as a nasty surprise.

i have noticed the p38 runs out of bullits rather fast. also how do you use dive brakes. the 109z just like the stang with the same type of shape just looks silly to me.not saying that wouldnt be a resone not to fly it just that it looks like simese twins lol.

Map the dive brake to your joystick and for me the trick is to use it sparingly and snap it on and off quickly...don't leave it on.

It will cause you to stall and spin at slow speeds. I find the combat flaps to be best for medium and slow speed manuevering still.

Dive breaks are good for quick landings in hostile environments and it makes the lightning a nifty dive bomber too.

yes.

BF110: 5000kg+ with 2x1450HP wingspan: 16.28m
P38: 7000kg+ with 2x1450HP wingspan: 17.16m

speed:
P38 win far

manubility:
P38 win far too.

It seems American's tac win.

But in BF109Z,
8000kg+ with 2x1475HP, wingspan: 13.27m

his speed, his climbrate, his manubility
is far far beyond the P38s and BF110s.
maybe Ghost plane...

I thought Coops were supposed to be somewhat realistic. Why is the 109Z in one? I can see using it in an open free for all furball server, but not a Coop?

"BF110: 5000kg+ with 2x1450HP wingspan: 16.28m
P38: 7000kg+ with 2x1450HP wingspan: 17.16m"

P38 takeoff weight is listed just under 7000kg.

But 110 "Empty Weight" is 5700kg (saying 5000+ is rather misleading). I'm sure that "empty weight" is VERY different from "takeoff weight". It doesn't include fuel, does it? Or even ammo? Maybe not even guns or crewmembers?

A google search turned up a "gross take off weight" of 7300kg for the 110G-2. A google search of the P-38 found a "gross weight" of 7227kg for the P-38F.

A small percentage of coops have always been "just for fun" or "what if's". The hosts are usually good enough to say so before launch, if people are watching the lobby chat.

I fly the J alot. The thing that strikes me is that the 38 seems to be the best of the American "big 3" (38, 47 and 51)at the typical low altitude df I see on the servers. It dives well, is pretty fast and can sort of turn well.

It really hangs on it's prop. The fun thing is - it does even better up high!. Unfortunately, I don't see a lot of high fights going on.
