Hi guys

im a n00b to the game never having even touched a sub sim before in my life. after completing the training missions, and reading thru some internet guides, i started a carrear <sp?> i was ordered to Patrol AM19, and on the way i spotted a destroyer, i sunk to periscope depth, and shadowed it untill i was within 800 meters, done all the torpedo stuff, and after deciding that magnetic fuses work much better i fired and prayed. and BINGO it exploded right under its keel sinking it in minutes. the feeling was fantastic, as a resumed course.

thenw ile on patrol i spotted a Large convoy. and proceeded to set to silent running and sneak right ito the middl eof the sinking a T3 tanker with a torpedo.i then started to get pinged and snuk out for a few miles then came in sunk a cargo ship this time.

Questions:

1. should i kill the destroyer protecting the fleet first, will that usally give me free reign to destroy the rest of the convoy?

2. am i selling my self short, should i take out more ships before sneaking out.

3. whats peoples opnions on using the deck gun to take out targets if a destroyer is about.

4. whats the TCD on the tower all about is it better to use that or the one on the periscope?

sorry to be a pest but im addicted now!

Firstly, are you absolutely sure there is only one destroyer? With convoys, there are often two or three. One out front and one on each side. Sometimes the far side of the convoy is actually beyond visibility limits, so you have to be very careful.

If you sink the destroyer first, then it will alert the convoy ships which will start weaving, making targetting tougher.

It also depends on the weather, in good weather, it makes mroe sense as a) you can be more certain of the number of escorts and b) there is a chance to surface and go with the deck gun.

It also depends on the year. Early in the war, there will be fewer escorts anyway, they will be less likely to avoid you and there will be a much smaller chance of air-support being called in. If you are near the British coast, aircraft may only be an hour away, and it will probably take you that long to sink the ships.

Late in the war, the merchant ships may be armed, making it impossible to surface and sink them with your gun anyway.

I personally sneak in, attack two or three ships, then sneak away in the opposite direction to the convoy's line of travel, surface, race ahead at full speed, while reloading and then set up for another attack.

2. am i selling my self short, should i take out more ships before sneaking out.

At this stage, no. You'll need to build up some experience first, so that's fine. Later, you should probably fire a full salvo (that is, all forward and aft torpedo tubes) before sneaking away to reload and reposition.

3. whats peoples opnions on using the deck gun to take out targets if a destroyer is about. Don't! Let me assure you, that the destroyer's rate of fire, number of guns and gun calibre are all far superior to yours. If you get caught on the surface, you'll certainly submerge alright, but you will not be resurfacing!

4. whats the TCD on the tower all about is it better to use that or the one on the periscope? There are TDC (Torpedo Data Computers) scattered about the inside layout of the U-Boat. While you can control some settings via those, it is better to use the direct interfaces "O", "F3" or "F6" (they are the keyboard shortcuts to get to them). I generally use the periscope ("F3") to do most of the work, and then check it on "F6". Sometimes, I will get the speed of the ship independently (for example a radio message about the convoy speed), and so will set that manually on the TDC (F6) and do just the range and Angle-on-Bow (AoB) via the periscope. A lot of this comes down to circumstances and playing style. For more information, read the articles Manual Targetting (http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii/index.php?title=Manual_Targeting) and Automatic Targetting (http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii/index.php?title=Automatic_Targeting).

1. Attact the Merchants first. The first ship sinks they all start zig-zaging.
2. Youre choise.
3.Suicide.
4.No. They both lead you to the same place.
