Say you are in a bf 109 g10 and you are escorting some fw-190f8's on a ground attack mission. Would you stay with the FW's down low at less than 1000m or would you stay a couple of thousand meters above them so as to have an energy advantage in case they are jumped? In DGEN missions like this the autopilot wants to stay really low. But having played this game for a while and seen how important altitude/energy is, I wonder why you would ever want to come in low. Seems like even the attacking fw's would do better coming in high and diving down to attack. After all FW's aren't the best climbers. You're in a lot of trouble if you get pounced from above when you are at 400m. I see how it is a toss up between avoiding detection and being at an energy advantage, but at least in game, the latter seems a lot more important. Maybe historically the former was more important. Any thoughts? Opinions?

I like to stay as high above teh bombers as I can and still see them and support them.

I'd keep an altitude advantage as well, since the AI will spot you anyways. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif Might as well be ready when they come.

What about historically?

I am doing the Joint Ops Training Course and we have been taught to stay 600m above at a distance of a 1 km behind. Seems to work ok.

Any low level escort mission is irrelevant due to the game`s very bad dot/LOD rendering system.

That is if you`re flying axis because it has been proven that axis LODs are far easier to see from any distance with few exceptions for allied planes like Lavochkin,Jak7/1,P39,P47,P51.

If reds go low escort they frame completely into the background and are invisible from >300m.The scenario is LW sees bomber formation, does not see any red escorts, attacks the bombers and gets bounced by those red escorts that were earlier invisible for them.

Now if LW goes low escort they are clearly visible from 3km and identified.Next thing is they`re bounced by red attackers and have to run or are already downed.

Now if red gains some alt the situation does not change.
If however LW go high alt cover they
1)can`t see their bomber formations
2)can`t see red attackers and sweep them.

German LODs of bombers/transports are also invisible from distance with exception of Ju87.

Hence the only way you will stay safe is to go at least 4000m escort. You will have tough time protecting them and in 70% cases lose BUT you will have
1)speed to B&Z
2)alt to dive and run
3)alt to bail out safely(at least 800m).

In low level missions VVS/RAF(not USAAF) have all the cards because very bad rendering system steals SA from LW cover.

Do as I do.If the game does not let you judge the situation, you stay up high until you see and are able to actually track the target.Only THEN you dive on him and attack.

Most LW pilots when they escort they go low because they want to see.Next thing hey get in trouble and you see 80% of them KIA.

Ground attack cover missions?Just check how invisible are AG20/B25.Luftwaffe either puts themselves in a risking situation by having no alt advantage and see them
or
Luftwaffe goes high alt and sees them just after they attack the targets.

Point? In LW you either stay safe and lose or get killed and maybe win.Pick your thing.

A fine day with perfect flight conditions, sunny,no rain little cloudy.
All we see is tracers down low.

That joke of a visibility system is no longer funny because Oleg knows this since day one in IL2 yet he denies this problem even exists.

Well...we had 3.01 dots once but what can you do when 70% of the flying crowd are low level T&Bers.

In WINTER maps however, Luftwafe rules the skies.

Online when escorting low-level ground pounders I like to stay above and slightly behind. Whilst it's true that it's sometimes impossible to spot the aircraft you're escorting, using TS, the pilot of the ground pounder can keep you informed of his position relative to ground features whilst you both scan the skies for enemy aircraft. I bagged two Bf109's who tried to attack the Tempest that I was escorting the last time I used this tactic!
