View Full Version : OT - UK Dakota with D Day markings

I was leaving my house near Oxford about midday, and a Dakota with D-Day black and white stripes flew over me, quite low. I've done a quick internet search and all I can find are pleasure lights (had one last year) and the BBMF Dakota, http://www.bbmf.co.uk/othertypes.html, but none of them are marked with black and white stripes.

It's great seeing these planes at air shows, but there's something a bit special about a chance encounter over your house, so I'd like to find out more about this Dakota. I'd be grateful if anyone could tell me where it's based, or provide any information about it.

Its very likely to have been one of the Air Atlantique fleet of DC-3's based at Coventry airport. They have one marked up in D-Day colours to fly people out to France for battlefield tours.

This the tour company http://www.leger.co.uk/tours/fdk/

I keep trying to get the Mrs to let me go with a few mates from work. No success to date. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Thanks Bo_Nidle. I took an Air Atlantique flight on one of their Dakotas last year, but I didn't realise they also had one marked up in D-Day colours.

I've just shown my wife the website, got the same response from her as I imagine you got!

Great pics, but I'm not sure to be honest...the only thing that struck me was the fact that it was a Dakota flying over my house, and it had D-Day markings. I didn't notice other markings, I was also trying to stop my two-year old son from running into the road at the time.

Bo_Nidle's suggestion makes sense as I live between Coventry and Biggin Hill, and the tour company he refers to starts the tour at Coventry, then to Biggin Hill, then to Normandy

Any idea what happened to that one after it left the museum?

hmmm...A Normandy battlefield tour that includes a flight in a Dakota is tempting... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Last year I flew with a German MB Squad mate in the Rapide based at Duxford. Amazing 20 min flight for only 60.00 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Here's a pic from the flight.

The Rapide's one of the prettiest planes I've ever seen. What a treat.

Here's another pic of the flight in the Rapide.Amazing to consider that this aircraft first flew in 1934 and was used by the RAF in the early war years to train Observers/Navigators.

It was also used by British European Airways after WW2.

I should add that the above second pic shows a view of the museum at Duxford. At the far left can be seen the US display hangar. The display includes a B-17, B-24, B-25, B-52, P-51, P-47 and many more.

And sells great coffee.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
