View Full Version : 60 rpg....?

so i started to fly the Spitfire LF V w/out infinite ammo now that i can control the a/c. and must i say, it climbs amazingly well and handles like a dream. not very fast but hey, spitties were never really that fast to begin with. cutting infinite ammo, i believe, will hone my accuracy. against AI's i guess its no problem to get hit them, as i bagged 2 109Fs and 3 Stukas (remember theyre AI's so theyre pretty stupid, but i hit them and i felt proud xD).

Anywho, i ran out of ammo after that last kill, and quick so i decided to test out really how long i could fire. looking up for some info on fire rates, i found that the HS.404 Hispano 20mm cannon fires... about 10 rps. HOLY SMOKES i have 6 seconds of fire xD

any tips on flying w/ 60 rpg? Wow im wishing for an LF Vc now! lol

Easy, don't fire until you're really close. Don't forget to set your convergence shorter, too.

Fire in short, 1/2 second bursts (Those Hispanos usually only need a couple of solid hits to really put the hurt on pretty much any fighter).

If you're that close anyway, those 4 .303's should be able to penetrate the engine block nicely if they converge. I would try and not to use your cannon very much at all. One or two bursts of it per enemy combatant, otherwise you'll run low. Those .303's can put on the hurt if they're used properly.

The Spitfire Vb, for a while, was the only Spitfire in the game. So I got pretty good at using those few cannon rounds. Like everyone else was saying...minimize your firing time. Only shot when you're really close...and only tap the trigger to see if you've got it right. If not...reposition and tap again. If you see hits fire a burst and try and cripple the guy.

Don't do what most pilots do and keep shooting till there's nothing left...mission kills are enough. Especially against the AI because they usually crash it anyways.

Setting you m/g convergence about 50m ahead of the cannons' will help if you use your .303 tracer stream to line up your shot, a bit like a boxer's sending a flurry of jabs before the knock-out blow. Always aim for a vulnerable point that will at best destroy the plane, or at least will reduce it's ability to function well. Your own survival dictates the need to hone the accurate diagonal pass-and-disengage tactic.
Hanging onto your opponent's tail only increases the dangers of your getting dogged by your enemy's wingman or escort.

thanks, guys, i'll be sure to try that out. i'll set my convergence to 180m and MGs to 210m. then i'll try some random 20, 000' escort mission to see if my LF V can handle that altitude lol.

Switch off your targeting computer.

I have been flying online for about a year now, and I still find the 60rpg really short. My fav plane is the Fw190, so you can imagine the difference in time of Firepower when I fly the MkVb.

One kill and I only have about 20rpg left, so if you get into trouble, you are left with only 4 light MG's in no time at all.

DOnt forget the RAF was used to 8xlight MG's before, so even 60rpg of canno ammo per wing was really powerful at the time. Seems funny now.

I will always take a lesser performing SPitfire MkV/Seafire as long as I get 120rpg in the c wing.

One map I love on UKded2 has SPitfire Vc LF 1943 and Seafire III vs Zeros from 1943 and Ki61's.

Most prefer the performance of the LF 1943, but I always take the Seafire purely because of the extra ammo. I find I need the ammo more often than I need the extra climbing ability on that map because you have to B&Z the Zeros in a Spit V anyway.

A6M3's I think the 1943 Zero's are and they are superior to the MkV at close in dogfighting and about the same in terms of speed/climbing.

so if you fly Fw190's, Xiolablu, would you not take a Spitfire IX over the seafire III or Spitifre Mk. Vc? What do pilots like about the LF V over the IX's that make them so popular...? after all, it has no high-alt performance making it virtually useless for bomber escort.

i thought only i liked it lol

Hi SirPapps.

On the server I play on most, Ukdedicated2, they run historical maps, such as CHannel '42 which simulates the appearance of the Fw190 over the English. As its 1942 there is no Spitfire mkIX snd only the MkV. Its very tough for red as the Fw190A4 is far superior, but its a great challenge.

The map I was talking about in the post above is Burma43 which has Zeros/Ki61/Ki43/Betty/D3A1 from 1943 versus Spitfire mkV's/Beaufighters and Seafires from 1943.

So you see that maps simulating encounters between 1941-early43 have no SPitfire IX. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You should get online as soon as possible and try out some of these historical maps. Each side has ground targets to destroy, and to win the map your team must cover your own troops from the enemy and destroy their ground targets. These maps simulate the historical encounters of WW2 very well and there is much teamwoek between bombers and fighters in order to win the maps http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If there is a SPitfire IX or mkVIII then I would always take that over the Spitfire MkV.

Get online with the latest IL2 edition, you will love it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif If you need any help getting started pm me, I will help you.

O sorry i forgot we don't have a Merlin tail, Merlin 61 version of the c-type wing Spitfire IX which entered service in mid-1942.

anyway, thanks so much for helping, all! Okay, thanks for offering Xiolablu. i've recently found a copy of 1946 in a Canadian EB games store in January. i have no clue how they had it before the American release but w/e lol. now i have to wait until people set up servers as i can't find any whenever i go online.
