Try living in the UK.

Then try buying a Cougar, and modding it. Then suffer some technical problems and mod another...

OTOH, $2500 ~ 8.3 hours in a Stearman (which is probably the cheapest WWII warbird you'll find).

I'm sure you've got a lot more hours out of IL2!

Been to the UK before, ungodly expensive over there! Yall have my sympathy! Got to spend a couple of weeks in lovely scenic downtown Manchester. Oddly enough, havent been back to the UK since..... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I actually bought the X52 since it was on sale, and I was trying to prevent myself from spending a godawful stupid amount of money on a joystick (cougar). http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I thought about flying lessons, but most of this stuff was purchased over several years in "oh, its only a hundred bucks, its no big deal" increments. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

As far as time, I probably have at least 8.3 hours in just about every plane in the game, except for the I.A.R series birds and a couple of the late Italian birds (working on that though).

If I had that money I'd probably use it the same way , but so far Il-2+ace+pf has only cost me about $53.00 so I'd rather go fishing or hunting then be stuck inside all day actually.

Same here, take away the dollars (or ) and add a healthy dose of real life (plus some free flights in a true warbird) = very happy thank you http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'd say that as addictions go, IL2 is a very soft one.

Today I spent 25 (~$50) to fly in a gliding competition.

I didn't find any lift, and was down within 15 minutes (I wasn't alone in this BTW). But getting there, rigging the aeroplane, putting it away etc took long enough that I left the house at 0730 and wasn't back until 2000.

I'm doing it again tomorrow. Hopefully the weather (and my flying) will be better...

In another thread, it was pointed out that loved ones don't understand and find it difficult to accept the time this hobby takes. By way of contrast, many of the guys involved in this comp rent caravans and actually live at the airfield.

To use your analogy, IL2 is really more like a soft gateway drug. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

BTW, Real flying is much better than IL2, but I don't advise you to try it, because you will get hooked.

Man, y'all are rookies. Try somewhere in the range of $15,000 over about 10 years plaing Air Warrior.

I think I'm going to explode. I've been kept away from the game all day (haven't even gotten to see my pretty HOTAS until now) due to the worst migraine/eyeache I've ever had. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

Even turning my head slightly conjures up images of just-used used toilets, air sickness bags, and... Oh, oh gawd... Be right back...

The money I've spent is half a drop in a bucket compared to the time I've spent on this sim.

The worst part is that during all my vacation time spent away from reality, I'm still aging. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

The only thing that makes this a 'bad crack habit' for me is that I spend too much time sitting on mine (crack, that is!) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Really cheap addiction. Il-2FB+AEP+PF=$90 or less, chuck in say six other games at $80=$480 +$90=$580, +$70 Joystick (Logitech 3D Pro) + the computer $2000 or just over in my case, equals a grand total of:

$2650. Compared to most of my mates of the same age, who're binge drinkers, my night's entertainment over two years (which is a fair enough estimate for the use of six games, plus FB, and the lifespan of my PC before requiring upgrade) works out at about $25.50 a week, compared to the average night out for a binger is $150 for a "decent" weekend, or more, depending on what you drink, that's 104 weeks for two years partying x $150 = $15,600 for two years of binging compared to the modest $2650 of a gaming habit. Even if you factor out 2/3 of the binging cost and say regular entertainment is a TV or something, with drinking in moderation, that's still $5,200 for two years, and if you're gaming and going to parties in moderation so you add an extra $2,000 that's still cheaper than drinking!

Seems like a cheap addiction to me :P Plus I can go to work and school without a splitting headache every Monday and Tuesday.

Well, the game is very addicting. As an Irony, I've heard of people getting totally blasted high and then flying in a DF server.

FB/AEP/PF: $100

Joystick and computer: $1700

10oz of Mary-Jane: $100

Shooting down 5 consecutive enemy aircraft while being high: Pricless

Well if you're just going to count what you actually paid to play Il-2FB+AEP+PF then mine'd be a lot lower: my sweet rig wasn't bought for this game, the joystick I would have gotten anyway, and so that leaves just the cost of the game really, pounds are about double AU dollars so mine'd be less than $140 total over four years :P

Those of you who're online flyers remember to count the cost of your broadband connection for up to five years... even if you count only 25% of your online time as game time it's still going to add up to a fair whack http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I find the $ costs difficult to evaluate, actually. I spent a small fortune on my computer but I use it for a lot of other things, including other games. So not too sure which 'fraction' of that cost should be attributed to IL-2/FB/AEP/PF.

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned it's been well worth it!

But also, after about 2 years of use, My Cougar has become 'sloppy' and I'm now gonna have to repair/mod the thing. Any tips or links would be appreciated.

Best regards,
panther3485

Did I offend you in an earlier life Tbolt?

Il2/FB needent be an expensive habit.

I think the point is that I would have my computer anyway, I didnt buy it purely to play IL2. Same with my net connection.

If you have to factor that lot in, then I would say it has cost me about 300 for my comp, 77 for game+stick, 20 a month for net.

Well, its a lot!
