FAITH HOPE AND CHARITY

Two years ago some of the best flight-sim machinima filmmakers out there got together and decided to produce a machinima film together. As we consolidated our talents and began working our project grew bigger and bigger. We believe this movie will be of one of the highest quality, if not most ambitious, machinima works done to date. The movie tops 1 hour in length!

Months of post-production, custom CGI additions, original score, etc etc.

Well, we're nearly there. The blood, sweat, and tears of the last two years are coming to an end. The work is coming to fruition. It's been a long road. Lots of challenges both, technically and personally, and we're still going through them, we're not quite done yet Smile . For those that will be interested we will also be making a full production DVD available as well with commentary tracks, subtitles, special features, etc. We are going to be releasing a movie poster per day until release (you know it must be close then don't you Wink ). The final poster released will also most likely be the DVD cover as well.

We will be announcing the premiere of the actual film within weeks to days.

So without further adieux, here is the first poster in the series (the next ones will be posted here as well)....

http://downloads.meyeuniverse.com/cfp/POSTER10_4.jpg

You can view the website for the movie at www.wingmenproductions.com (http://www.wingmenproductions.com) . We also have some message boards, and while not all areas are open to the public at this time, we will be opening those 'workplace' forums to the general public once the film is released so everyone can see and experience the process we went through to produce the movie, warts and all Smile . We hope that people will read through them and be able to appreciate the work involved and then as well be able to glean information for themselves on how to create a machinima film of their own.

Thanks for your interest and hope to hear/see from you on release day!

On behalf of Wingmen Productions,

MrVH / NTESLA (THX-1138)

I must live in a cave or something. I have no idea what "machinima" is. Never heard of it, and having read the posts in this thread, still don't know what it is!! This has blown over my head. So this is not a "real movie", but some sort of computer animated production?? I am headed to google for now, after confessing my ignorance before all here.

Mortoma - Glad that you found out what Machinima actually is! Our bad thinking everyone know what it is. In general it's a movie using computer games and/or computer 3D animation to create it.

If I remember correctly they did have more than three but they kept canibalising them to make sure they had three airworthy ones at any one time. Furthermore, I think that if you tried to assign production numbers to each of the three you would find that they were not always the same three aircraft ie If "Charity" has been very badly shot up they might have taken all the usable bits off and put them on a spare airframe and called that "Charity" instead.

Before anyone flames me for putting down someones attempts to make a good film by nitpicking the details, that is not what I am doing. I was just answering someones question and as I am doing it it from vague memories I may even have got most of it wrong http://wildroad.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/outtahere.gif

I am looking forward to see the film (and I wont be picking holes in it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ) BTW, personally I think the best poster would be a mix of the two above ie It is good to include Malta in the background but it also needs three glads.

Wingmen Productions is proud to present Faith Hope and Charity, a machinima film two years in the making. This film, inspired by actual events, tells the story of the defense of the island of Malta during WWII.

Malta, part of the British Commonwealth, is actually a small group of islands in the Mediterranean Sea, about half way between Sicily and the northern coast of Africa. On June 12, 1940, the day after Italy declared war on Britain, the Italians began a prolonged campaign of aerial bombardments against Malta.

This film highlights the early phase of that conflict as it follows the lives of three RAF pilots: George Burges, John Waters and Timber Woods. These pilots flew Gloster Sea Gladiator biplanes in the heroic defense of the island against more modern Italian fighters and bombers. In all, about six Gladiators were involved in the fighting--some were cannibalized for parts--but only three could ever be scrambled for a single sortie. The legend that arose from that conflict immortalized three of the Gladiators, nicknamed Faith, Hope and Charity.

It is important to point out that this film is not a documentary. While the story it tells was inspired by actual people and events, we found it necessary to change certain facts for dramatic purposes. Those interested in the full history behind the battle for Malta are invited to read a summary here at our Web site under the History tab. A more complete history can be found at www.wikipedia.org (http://www.wikipedia.org) under "Siege of Malta (1940)"¯. We would encourage you to enjoy the movie first, as the histories will give away important elements of the film's story.

HISTORY OF THIS PROJECT

This film project began on June 16, 2005. A group of about a dozen filmmakers from this forum decided to get together and create a film together using their combined skills and resources. Originally, it was going to be a small project, lasting no more than a few months and producing a film around 15 minutes in length. As Murphy's Law would have it, it took two years to complete the project, almost 20 people were involved in the production, and the film is more than one hour in length. A lot could be written about the production process itself, but I'll save that for another post or let the rest of the Wingmen Productions crew tell the story. Suffice it to say a lot of hard work was invested in this.

Those interested can read the original thread that started this project here:

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/65710358/m/3811088033

Reportedly, George Lucas once said, "A film is finished when you stop working on it."¯ We could have easily continued to work on FH&C for another six months or more, polishing and tweaking. However, there came a point when we realized we needed to wrap things up and release this. We all have things in the film we would have liked to change or polish up more, but you have to draw a line at some point. Today, June 16, marks the two-year anniversary of when we started this journey, and we felt this would be an appropriate point to call FH&C officially "finished."¯

For my part, I would just say that it's been an honor to work with the group of guys who put this together. The entire process has been very educational, almost like a mini film school. We hope FH&C inspires other independent filmmakers to push the limits of what machinima (filmmaking using games as graphics engines) can do.

The film is 633MB, so prepare for a long download.

We are also pleased to announce that FH&C will be available shortly on DVD (both NTSC and PAL versions will be available). The DVD will be the best way to enjoy the film for those who want the best in video and sound quality, as well as special features.

In addition, we have set up a PayPal link for those wishing to make a voluntary contribution to the moviemakers who worked on this for two years. It is strictly voluntary, but any contributions will be very much appreciated.

Feel free to post any comments about the film, but if your post contains information that would give away important parts of the story, please type "WARNING -- SPOILERS"¯ or something similar at the start of your post as a courtesy to those who haven't downloaded it yet.

A final thank you to all of the sites and site administrators who are and will be hosting this film. A complete list of mirror sites is available at the link below.

We hope all our efforts amount to an enjoyable film experience for you the viewer. Enjoy the show! Smile

This was really really good. Whoever made the city and harbour area deserves a medal. It looks absolutely amazing. Is it the map used in bird-brain's Faith, Hope and Charity campaign? I certainly recognise the skins he made. Unfortunately my virus scanner interrupted right at the very end so I still haven't seen the final moments of the film as it screwed up Windows Media Player but I'll defintely watch the end as soon as I can. It was remarkably moving given that it only showed aircraft and buildings. The sketches of the pilots and aircraft were very well done and also added to the emotional impact of some scenes.
The voice acting was pretty good, especially the Scottish guy whose voice I know I have heard somewhere. I liked the sound effects, especially the breathing during the dogfights. Some of the bullet impacts sounded a bit plinky plonky when I thought it would sound more like ripping but it didn't really matter.

The big dogfight scenes, especially those involving the Italian fighters were excellent - you must have had cameras everywhere to capture some of those images. I'm just about to leap in my Gladiator and take on the vicious Italian sods, especially those evil CR-42s. It gladdened the heart to see them going down in flames, the swine!

The storm clouds from IL2 worked well. Am I right in thinking i saw some real clouds as a backdrop in a couple of scenes? At one point, early in the film, there were some amazing cloud shots. They were merged with teh IL2 engine very well.

The images inside the Italian bomber were great - would've been nice to see more of their point of view - especially when the Galdiators came swooping down. The desktop scenes were also well done, I liked the Pacific Fighters disc that was casually strewn on top. These scenes looked a little cartoonish to me but that's a minor point and I'm very impressed with how it was done.

The music fit very well. I'm not a particularly musical person so I don't really notice it much but it seemed very professionally done. I understand it was created for this movie. If so then it is superbly done as it sounds like something you'd hear in a Hollywood movie. That is not meant as an insult by the way!

Overall I really enjoyed it and can only marvel at the amount of effort that went into all aspects of it.

Thanks Flatspin, a really good critique.

The map is bird-brain's, and it's a beauty. When we first asked bird-brain if we could use it we had actually thought about a coordinated release of campaign and movie, but we took a lot longer than expected!

Yes, you probably heard my Scottish accent in a few other movies, but I have to confess not all the grunts were mine. Some were added later by an English impersonator, lol!

Yep, some additional clouds were put in. Many, many special effects were added throughout by the special effects team! Did you spot any other ones?

A huge bonus for this movie was having the score written for it, and we think it is fantastic. If you really like it, MrVH is selling an audio CD.

Well, have fun in your Glad against the Italians. Sure, get into the spirit of fighting the enemy. However, with respect to the Italians, and especially my Italian friends, please rememeber that is a dramatised story in the hollywood style 'good guys versus the bad guys' style.

Hey Joe,
I noticed a lot of little touches but no doubt there were dozens more. I was watching it again just before and it reminded me of some other good points. Here they are in no particular order.
The Maltese flag slipping down and fading into another scene in the opening sequence. Actually that whole sequence itself was very polished, and professional looking.

Of course there was lots of camera shake and blurring, especially in flybys and dives. The images themselves were all filtered or something to give it a softer look and the colours were washed out nicely. Just flying over the map before the effect isn't the same as in the early shots of the movie, mainly due to the vivid colours used for so many ground objects. Shame they do that really. I hope BOB has a more subdued palette.

The night sky and the shooting starts of course. Plus the fire and explosions. I thought some of the fire looked a bit 'thin' and ethereal but again, just a minor quibble. I liked the flashing lights on the fire trucks/ambulances. They added a nice touch of realism.

The scene inside the hangar was very well done and made me wonder why they never incorporated stuff like that into IL2 in the first place. Again, here's hoping BOB will have it.

Well that's all the things that come to mind easily. Congratulations again to the crew who implemented them. Even "simple" things like setting up the missions, getting cameras and planes in the same spot at the same time would have taken hours.

Everyone else, you have to watch it.

All I can say is WOW!

What a great story. I am not much of a history buff so I was unfamiliar with this story. Now I know! I continue to learn new and fascinating things from the community and the game we love so much.

What a terrific ending, it gave me goosebumps.

The only thing I can say on the negative side was the graphic quality in some scenes. Mainly the banding on the water and in the sky. This was very noticeable in a few scenes which was disappointing but not a showstopper.

Thank you for all your very hard work gents. Incredible dedication to a very worthy cause. The talent in this community is just awe inspiring. Amazing!

The colour banding was unavoidable because we tried to keep the file size down to an acceptable size for download, hence the bitrate was reduced dramatically.

For those who don't read end credits (who does?), the sketches that appear in the film were all done by James Dietz, an internationally renowned artist who specializes in military and aviation art (www.jamesdietz.com). It was a major turn of good luck that our screenwriter/co-producer Wiley (aka Doolittle81) was a friend of Jim's. The sketches were not only beautifully drawn, they helped tell the story in a way that would have been impossible using even CGI. Thanks again for all you did for this film, Jim. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Neet film.
First, very, very few have the talent let alone the patience to do anything like that at all.
I like the way the voice changed from external to internal- well thought out.
I wont bother to ask how you cheated on some of those camera angles. Excellent. Beyond excellent.
The trucks rolling up, hanger doors closing
The dubbed in sound of parts hitting the water, and bombs- very nice. Wind noise in struts- cool.
The pan from "live" to desktop- nice.
I no doubt see the future of this being a cheap very doable alternative to studios and replacing expensive CGI type films like flyboys etc.
Perhaps making it possible to make authentic movies about specific battles- like that father and son show on PBS about ancient battles.
Now...at the risk of being an armchair quarterback...I didn't care for the "camera trying to focus" look on many of the dogfight shots. It was like that guy from cops was chasing the planes around.
Whens the next one? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

You've seen the movie, now fly the campaign!

Two years ago, Bird_Brain created a Malta campaign that was later used to make the IL-2 movie "Faith, Hope and Charity." Working with Bird_Brain, we had originally planned to release both the film and the campaign at the same time. Unfortunately, the movie came in a little behind schedule (er...about a year and a half later than we imagined when we started). http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Bird_Brain released his campaign over a year ago, but some of you may never have heard about it. Now that the film has been released, you might be interested in flying the campaign. Can you do better than George Burges, John Waters and Timber Woods? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Just a thought, I wondered if any of the team are going to Flying Legends at Duxford; probably a daft idea, but what about the chances of you selling some copies there?

I can testify about this Campaign:it is D___n tough to catch anything in that beautiful little Gladiator! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

I haven't flown the campaign myself, but I've been told by those that have that it's a real challenge to climb fast enough to intercept the bombers and fighters in the Gladiator. Just goes to show what a difficult job the real RAF pilots had!

The DVD is being created right now, so orders at this point are PRE-ORDERS, we just want to make that clear so we don't get death threats in a week. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif We want the DVD to look like a professionally-made DVD in all respects. For a look at the DVD cover and graphic that will go on the DVD itself, check out the updated FH&C thread in the Movie Makers Forum here:

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/65710358/m/2261004765

Among the DVD's special features will be a feature-length commentary track made by the filmmakers and all of James Dietz' sketches that appear in the film (I've seen the high-res images, and they're excellent).

Wow, great job! The effects and sounds are fantastic. The music didn't seem to fit in some places, and the voice seemed a bit off occasionally, but those are just minor things.

Very well polished movie. Good job of telling the story. Great job at making the viewer, well... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

Now to go fly Faith, Hope & Charity! (Again!)

Hats off to all involved with the making of the film. And to Bird_Brain for the campaign also.

Great job!!

Very Happy Thank you very much for the compliments gentlemen! It has been a long road to complete this film but feel proud at the final product. We appreciate that you loved this work and have been emotionally touched with the story. This just makes us want to create more movies with good stories like "FHC" for all of you to watch and enjoy! Now, let me get started again with "The Few" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

My son has just pointed out something I had not noticed myself...the record player at the end is turning anti-clockwise and so is pushing the needle instead of dragging it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif After an epic production like that I guess someone was too exhausted to notice. I did not and unlike my son I do come from the generation before CDs http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Sheesh, how many times do we have to say - it was an intentional mistake to see if you were paying attention.

Your son (of the mp3 era?) should win the prize http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif

I've just finished watching this and felt compelled to write.

Absolutely fan-bloody-tastic! IF this doesn't win some awards at the machinima film festivals then I'll eat my own head.

The music in the credits was mesmerising - particuarly the last piece where the dedication to the pilots appeared - I must profess to having goose bumps and a bit of a lumpy throat.

Once again incredible all of you involved!

Well I have held off watching the downloadable version and stumped up for the DVD straight away ( a sign of my confidence in the creators and contributors ) so I can watch it on the big screen! I have also avoided watching or reading any comments on the subject, but rest assured when I have recieved my copy I will be sure and give my critique.
