View Full Version : Just figured out how to make '46 run better

I haven't had any performance issues with the new addon. It installed great, and runs just like 405 did. I've just been messing with my Nvidia profile and suddenly realised that the old pathway to the FB exe is no longer applicable because the game dosen't live there anymore. So I reset the pathway to the 46 folder and tried it out. Everything is waaay smoother, with much improved framerates. I was even able to boost my screen res and AA filtering for no loss of performance! If you haven't done it already, give it a go. It might be the performance boost you were looking for http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

You know when you right click on the desktop and select Properties/Settings/Advanced and then navigate to your Nvidia controls? (can't be more specific right now, I'm on the Mac at work and going from memory). The Nvidia Performance and Settings menu in there lets you tick the boxes and adjust the features of the card that you are using. The profiles refer to NV's ability to automaticly load different graphics setings according to which .exe is activated (in this case FB/PF/46). You can create customised profiles for every game you've got, and they will be automaticlly selected when you play. There is a FB/PF profile there by default, but it's fairly generic and the pathway is to the old Il-2 folder.

There is a guide at airwarfare.com on Nvidia settings that worked great for me. When I get home, I'll post a direct link and give some less incomprehensible instructions. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Working good now but could be better.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Phew! What a day (home now).

Heres what worked for me:

Right click on desktop and select Properties menu.

Click the Settings tab & click the Advanced button down the bottom.

Click the tab that lists your vid card (6800GT in my case). http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

This is your Nvid controls. Go to the section called Performance & Quality Settings. In the Application Profiles box, select il2fb.exe and Il2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles from the Application and Active Profiles boxes respectively.

Now click the Modify Profile... button and select "Modify" from the two choices.

In the next box, select browse, and navigate to the Il-2 Sturmovik 1946 game folder and click on the il2fb exe icon and press Open.

(Back now in the Modify Profile window) Click OK.

Now you can tweak the Nvidia settings...

Make sure the View: Advanced Settings is selected. From the available selections, tick the boxes and set them up as per below:

X Antialiasing settings 2xQ/4x (whichever is best for you)

X Anisotropic filtering - OFF

X Image settings - Quality

Color profile (leave blank)

X Vertical sync - ON

X Force mipmaps - Trilinear

X Conformant texture clamp - ON

X Extension limit - OFF

X Hardware Acceleration - Single display mode

X Trilinear optimisation - ON

X Anisotropic mip filter optimisation - ON

X Anisotropic sample optimisation - ON

Transparency antialiasing - OFF (don't tick the box)

X Triple buffering - ON

X Negative LOD bias - CLAMP

Now click OK and the new settings should be saved and activate when you start '46.

Finally, go to the setup tab in your '46 folder.

Click on the Settings tab and select Custom.

Set Texture mipmap filter to Anisotropic.
Set Texture compression to None.
Unselect Dither
Select Use Vertex Arrays
Unselect Polygon Stipple

Under Extensions:

Tick: Mutitexture, Combine, Secondary color, Vertex Array Extension and Texture Compress ARB.

Leve the others un-ticked.

Select OK to close and save.

This is what I did and found my performance greatly improved over identical settings in 4.05m. If anyone has any improvments to this, it'd be great if they can share them http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif.

Now for some dinner... I'm starving http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Which driver do you use? I can't find 'il2fb.exe' in the menu, only 'pf.exe' and 'il2.exe', thats just all. Using Forceware 93.81 here and also a 6800GT.

Any hint?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I'm on 93.71. Although I don't suppose it matters what the profile is named, as long as it has the settings, and points to the '46 Il2fb exe. You can create a new profile too I think, and just name it Il2-46 or somesuch. Good luck http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I tried to follow your advice, but I don't seem to have the "modify" option after clicking on "modify profile" (only "save as").

Apparently, I have ForceWare 83.90 (GF 7600). Maybe it's time to upgrade drivers...

S!

Do these settings apply to all Nvidia graphic cards or just the 6600-6800 ?

I have a 8800GTX with 97.44 drivers.

There is no "il2fb.exe" listed in the custom profiles, only "IL2", "IL2 Forgotten Battles + AEP",
and "Pacific Fighters". No IL2 1946 is listed either.

OK Feathered IV, I made all of the changes previous to the above quoted portion of your post, and I am forever in debt to you for the increased performance and detail. However...
When you start talking about my "46 Folder", and the "Setup Tab" I'm completely lost. I really want to click on my "Settings Tab" and select "Custom" but I am lost. Please break that portion down for me in the "IL2 for Dummies" version so that I can make the aformentioned changes to the custom settings of which you speak.

Thanks, and I really mean that,

Hans

No worries Hans. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You know how you click on the My Computer, then C:/, then Program Files, Ubisoft and then the 1946 folder? In there is an icon called Setup. That should be the place where you can make the final changes. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Disregard my earlier reply.

I got it working now, but actually I prefer having the above config as standard config for all my games now.
It does not only improve framerate with IL-2, but with every game so far with a little loss of detail, but not much.
