View Full Version : Having a hard time finding the "personality" of A/C in '46.

What am I missing? In my highly subjective opinion, I am not finding much of a difference in the way planes fly in this sim. Besides the obvious stuff like turn circle and top speed at varying altitudes.

I-16 has a nasty spin, p51 is hard to turn and not stall out at low speed is all I can think of off the top of my head. With 200+ flyable aircraft. Do the 109s and early 38s even have compression problems in IL2? Again, what am I missing? I want to like Il2 more, the community, graphics, and sheer amount of flyable A/C are great. I dunno, maybe in reality most planes really *do* fly the same. Just gameplay wise it gets boring fast compared to the other sim I play.

Please do not take offense if you are a die-hard IL2 fan. This is a serious question and I wonder what I am not picking up on. Thanks.

Every plane in this will "fly" relatively the same way, but they all have something different to offer in terms of caracteristics. For example, the P-39 has a spin that requires 10 000 feet to recover from, the Ta-183 is a cow when it comes to acceleration, the Tempest likes high power, low RPM settings, the Beaufighter torques like there's no tomorrow, the FW190 loves high speed, the P-51 loves altitude, etc...

Every plane in this sim has something different to play with.

Thanks Skunk, that's the kind of info I was looking for. I had forgetten about that scary P-39 stall. Interesting about the Tempest as well.

Carguy, the other sim I really like is called "Aces High II". No need to get defensive, this a legitamate question I and some others have with IL2.

I played aces high for years, since 2001. I just stopped paying for it last year, but I
still have a current copy.
In aces high the game does everything for you. If you run the engine hard for a while it will cut the boost for you. It pulls the flaps back in if you go too fast with any plane,trims the plane for you, does most of the bombsight calibration for you. Got the idea?

Here if you don't know and watch how you run the engine you'll cook it rather quick. You can blow your engine in so many ways in this game. and in every plane for a different reason. You'll over rev it in 109 if you play with the manual prop pitch and you don't know how. in other 109's you can blow it on the ground if you engage the water methanol boost at over 100% throttle. You can blow the engine on the 109E-7Z if you engage the GM1 boost at lower then 6500m. Of course, you can over heat it, can get your prop pitch shot up, your throttle cables shotup and so on.
Just for kicks do this:
go through the same short aerobatic flight in few planes. Start on the ground so you have to take off as well. do some stall tests too.
Try this planes one after the other:

-FW-190A8
-I185
-Gladiator
-P-80
-IAR-81C
-P-47D
-Mig3
-Ta152C
-C200
-Spitfire Mk.viii
-mig9
-Tempest
-ki27
after trying this you'll realize how different this things are from one another.
One may be slow and overweight, the next may be like a pocket rocket, then another ugly plane with strange stall and lot of torque, then a speed demon that can't turn or climb, and so on.
They all take off different, fly different, kill different and die different.

Another good reply, thanks Jaws. Yeah, I think I remember your CPID from AH1 -- I used to fly as Ely/Elysian. I'll try the acrobatic stuff out with those planes.

This is more of a gameplay question than some critique of the flight model or something. It is mostly subjective too, of course. For some reason I feel like I am flying almost the same plane over and over in IL2. I wanted the differences highlighted, which you guys are doing nicely.

In gameplay AH is way better then this thing because of the massive multiplayer thing. You just can't beat that 100 bomber mission to HQ or the GV wars in tank town. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Here you can get the variety you are looking for by joining the right servers, or getting involved in online wars.

I love to mix them up to get the variety. Yeah, Historia and that UK2 are fun for sure. I just can't shake that weird FM feeling that they are all more or less the same.

I can't imagine an impression of "alike-ness" in the enormous number of aircraft in this sim. Perhaps if you only use late-war fighters, but feeling similarity with the I-16 and J8, for example---impossible. TB-3 with a Bf 109? Me 163 with anything? Are all your settings on maximum difficulty? Is your stick in order?

i think guy is just trolling, thats all; came in and gone... no one can be that stupid and dont see or feel difference in the fm of different airplanes in il2.

I can agree that a lot of planes fly similar.

Lately I have been noticing a slight difference in the personalities of my two favorite planes, the N1k2 and the J2M5. The more I use them the more I see them differently.

Get to know your planes, then you will get to know personality.

Good grief. The difference between the highly maneuverable "super Zero" George and the less maneuverable Jack should have been blatantly obvious.

Other than manueverability, the Jack is all around better than the George. Except for high-speed dives.

Edit: on second thought. I can agree, they are different in stats. But they have similar personalities, until now.

Personality =/= Stats.
