Dynamic Dots http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif The new dots get smaller with range. With "rcu" file dotrange settings, the player can change how fast the dots grow small and turn into old single pixel dots and then go away. Work with dotrange setting to get realistic dot behavior.

Oleg, for many years I have looked at real sky and see real airplanes, now in FB/FP I see same thing. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif I use low res 1024x768 and medium res 1152x864 and new dots are great in both.

Some points not talked about at ubi.com....

Aircraft down low against ground are harder to see than high aircraft. Aircraft dots over ocean is in between--harder to see than high dots, easier to see than low dots. This makes sense as ocean has less detail than land to confuse eye. In either case, dots against land or sea, you can still easily lose the new dots if you don't pay attention--just like real life.

Thanks Oleg, we always hope to see these Dots in sim. I am offline simmer, and I always hoped to use FB with no text icon labels! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Now we can!!! This is the most important issue in FB/FP flight sim now.

The most important thing is NO TEXT ICONS NEEDED. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif This may be a problem for some onwhine internet dogfighter ACE who are "comfortable" with Red/Blue text icons to get high score. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I completely agree with Lex. I love playing with no icons in offline campaigns. This is the best improvement in the game yet. It feels scarily real now. As Lex says - this is awsum!

How do you ajust dot range? and will it work for off line? thxs http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

YES! I feel some sense of fear at seeing the dots, menacing, threatening in the distance. -- well, depending on the overall situation and mission purpose. As bomber pilot you see those dots and its a totally new frightening feel. Written text pasted on the sky does not give me the same feeling of Menace or Danger.

Yes it works offwhine. And it works great!

My "FB" computer is down so I can't access it to copy and paste the relevant control file ("rcu" file in basic game folder) and exact instructions to use it--its for onwhine chat but works offwhine too. However, I tried looking in the Pacific Fighters manual. On page 50 is instructions for onwhine play--it works for offwhine trust me, although it may be slightly different procedure. I wish my computer was up or I'd help more. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Well, you don't have to type in all THAT mess into the chat console--its like old DOS commands for those who remember that.

If I recall this correctly, if not I am setting you up for Frustration...Tully? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif In "rcu" file you can put...
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>
@alias q mp_dotrange COLOR 2 DOT 10 RANGE 3 TYPE 1 NAME 1
<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
I normally don't use seperate commands for FRIEND or FOE, just one command for all planes on either side. So I just ignore the FRIEND/FOE in my "rcu" file.

The numbers are distance in kilometers that the associated data appears next to the aircraft, except DOT which is the maximum farthest range at which dots are provided for the aircraft.

The "q" (or "z" or whatver keystroke you wish) is all you need to type in at the start of each game run. To enter chat mode, press Shift+Tab, press "q" and then press ENTER--just like olde Microsoft DOS operating system. You can see the icon commands take effect as the game is paused in chat mode. Press Shift+Tab again to exit chat mode and return to the game. Basically, @alias maps "q" to all that mess in the manual.

(slaps forhead) copyed and pasted for future reference http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif sorry I'm a little slow http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif just a accrued to me this is for icons

S~ Lexx, good post.

Unless I'm missing something that has been added to the mp_dotrange command, it seems to work the same as always, meaning that the only thing we can control about the new dots is the maximum possible range they will be visible, not necessarily when they will begin to fade and look more like the old dots.

I haven't seen any way to make them change the distance they begin to fade while still allowing them to be visible out to normal 15km range or so. Have you seen something new where perhaps they will remain visible at longer ranges but be less blocky at closer ranges?

DOT takes care of...dots.

The DOT number is different from the others. No text appears, what appears at the given range is...the dot. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Of course, because now the dots are so blatantly obvious that nobody could possibly miss them. They are, for all intents and purposes, icons themselves.

They should be a server side option.

LEXX_Luthor, a couple of links that might help you here. (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=50910533&m=4601027342&r=6091067342#6091067342)

Unless something's changed with the new dots, dots fade in over about 750m starting at the DOT distance. The default distance is 11km. I think somewhere in the 7.5 - 9 km region would suit some of the online crowd, but offline is completely up to the individual.

Thanks Zen, didn't see your post earlier.

Czech out the dots (as if nobody already has http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) they get smaller with distance. My short experiment before my FB computer crashed for good had the dots getting smaller--I think faster depending on dotrange settings. All I know is the big dots turned into small single pixel dots then vanished with greater distance. Off to work now. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I didn't realize that the dots were slaved to the dotrange settings! thanks for pointing that out. This makes the new dots perfect (i.e. customizable) Awesome!

Maybe you should find a server run by someone who knows how to use the RCU file? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

You can set those dots to only become visible at short range, and then you get the old dots out beyond that.. So... What's the problem?

btw...to see distant aircraft dots only, and NO TEXT ICONS, set all other ranges except DOT range to appear at .01 kilometer. Its been said that the numbers don't work when set to Zero, and the minimum range is .01km or 10 meters. Not bad.

If I did this right, my "FB" computer still down and can't access my "rcu" file to see what it looks like. Also, don't forget you can cycle through 3 types of icons -- forgot the Default keyboard press for this, "N" if I recall.

Actually the minimum range is 0.005 (5 metres). Anything under about 0.015 (15 metres) will hide the icons anyway, as by that range the are almost entirely within the 3D model of the aircraft they're attached to.

Tully or anyone, stupid question, if I turn icons "off" (as I have anyway) but play with these settings, will the dots still be changed (ie. visible at shorter or longer ranges)? In other words, do icons have to be on to adjust dot settings?
P.S. Tully, love the new Corsair pic, Finally got rid of the old one eh? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Yes, I think (http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif) icons must be ON to make use of the DOT range setting that controls dot behavior. Not sure, and can't experiment until I get my "FB" computer up running again. Of course with the text icons set to disply at 5 meters distance (.005 kilometers) you won't ever see any text icons until you crash into the other airplane. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

For me ground target dots are very unrealistic and i would prefer these before patch. Planes dot are more acceptable and could be stay for me in game.
