Hi fellas I'm looking for a good online guide or faq on flight sims in general. IL2 Forgotten Battles is the first sim I've played and while I'm really impressed by the graphics and percieved realism, I think a bit out of my depth.

I was expecting a thick(ish) manual out of the box but only got a thin booklet. The in game tutorials are a little too brief for a beginner. Just wondering where would be a good place to start for background info on flight simming. Or should I buy Flight Simulator 2002 for practice before combat sims?

Btw, the Logitech Freedom 2.4 is beautiful piece of gear. Forgotten Battles was partially an excuse to buy a cordless joystick. =)

Observation is a useful skill in FB.

For example, the link to this site is on the front page of the General Discussion Forum, directly underneath 'Chat Room'./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

- Flight Simulator 2002 for practice before combat
- sims?

Only if u are interrested in airliners or cessnas and modern navigation techniques . and simplified air trafic control...things. (I was)

I have it no more! I would have given u my copy..

All u need is in FB and u really dont have to know everything to fly and fight.
ofcoarse,... your engine will last longer if you know wich gauges to monitor on your instrumentpanel. and how to use wep (war emergency power)

check out http://www.mudmovers.com u get lots of answers there! Tactics also.

S!

From memory there is some useful documentation on the second IL2:FB CD.. the manual provided there goes into more detail than the crappy printed one in the box. It's been ages since I've opened it up, so I can't remember exactly whats on it... but have a look, you might find something.

I wont put Mudmovers in there only because it has been mentioned several times already..but between the four sites you should have more than enough info. Enjoy...
Also you might want to look at the link Fan Sites on the IL2 home page. You dont need FS2002. For now fly the IL2, the Hurricane, or the La5 (any varient)till you get a handle on things. Set your flight characteristics (Complex Engine Management, stalls, vulnerability, head shake etc..) to as real as you can get with the exception of ammo..make it unlimited untill you can get the feel for where your bullets are going...and keep your views available.... Use the Minimap and the icons too till you can get the hang of it. Dont feel bad...this sim has a very steep learning curve...but climbing it is a whole lot of fun and once you get up there a ways the fun squares.... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Just have fun....dont pay attention to some of the stuff that really doesnt apply to you yet like the whole full real thing, or use of icons etc... just concentrate on having fun and learning the sim.

Yep thanks. I always play sims on their full physics settings, whether it be planes, cars, or motorbikes. Don't really see the point in missing out on the developers work. I had considered FS2002 as my first flight sim but after some thought I don't think my attention span would be up to it!

Time for some reading then.
