View Full Version : How do I eliminate the huge black bars from top to bottom?

Absolutely terrific game! Just played the single player. I am stunned from the graphics of it.
But I am getting black bars from top to bottom when I play the game on 1920x1200 resolution.
Here's a screenshot I took on my Xfire just now.
http://screenshot.xfire.com/s/97080162-4.jpg
The graphics are absolutely stunning, no doubt about that. I am maxing everything out on high.
But it is just those black cut outs from top to bottom that makes the view look slim.

This same issue happens in Assassins Creed 1 and 2. However, in AC the black bars are slimmer. But in Splinter Cell Conviction those black bars are very thick. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I know they tried to create the essence of a real film.
But if there is a way to make this full screen without having those black bars. This would be much better, especially on my 24 inch monitor.

I use a HDTV/LCD HDMI 22" 1920x1080p with 16.9 aspect ratio set in the games menu and it fits the whole screen, no black bars.

I also use a 19" LCD DVI 1680x1050 with 16.10 aspect ratio set in game menu and there are black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

Is it something to do with XBOX360 16.9 aspect ratio games?.

Hmm, I am confused.
This is something that happens with AC2 and Splinter Cell Conviction and a few other Ubisoft games. It seems like all the latest Ubisoft games have black bars from top to bottom.

I don't have this problem with Crysis, Bad Company 2, PES 2010, GRID, COD4/MW2, etc.
90% of all my other PC games view full screen without those blackbars.

I play my games only on PC, don't own a console.
My monitor isn't an issue since most people have these black bars. http://www.xfire.com/games/tcs...popular_screenshots/ (http://www.xfire.com/games/tcscc/Splinter_Cell_Conviction/popular_screenshots/)
Here's some screenshots that other users took, mostly all of them have black bars, however they do vary in sizes, some are thicker than others.

If there's a solution to fix this, that'll be great!!!

thats not why you have black bars though. its cause your aspect ratio or your res, and you can scroll though the resolutions
just saying cause i barely found that out

It's the aspect ratio. If the 'Auto' setting causes the black bars, then it's choosing 16:9 for some reason. 1920x1200 = 16:10, so set it to 16:10 and you should be fine.

If that still doesn't fix it, it's probably a driver problem. Update to the latest video card drivers. Check the monitor driver in Windows as well, just in case it's chosen the wrong monitor profile.

WOW, thanks guys. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
Yes the aspect ratio was the problem.
By the way, Sevael, 16:9 ratio was the solution.

Mine was set in 4:3 aspect ratio. Even 16:10 caused black bars but slimmer ones.

Until I tried to set 16:9 and the black bars disappeared as shown in this screenshot. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
No more black bars, screenshot http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif (http://screenshot.xfire.com/s/97145687-4.jpg)

I guess this varies from monitor to monitor..

I am very happy now. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

The game only supports a 16:9 aspect ratio (probably because it's a direct port from the XBOX360 version).

If you have a 16:10 monitor and you select a 16:9 aspect in the game menus, the game will fit the whole screen but the graphics will be slightly distorted (everything will be stretched vertically).

Wrong. it supports 4:3, 16:9, and 16:10, however they gave us bars on widescreens at 16:10 and small screens at 4:3 probably because they didnt finish.

big difference to some, little difference to others.

That's really strange. The screenshot you posted is actually a 1920x1080 view, but stretched vertically to fill 1200 pixels. 1920x1080 is a 16:9 resolution, so that's why you didn't have black bars when setting to 16:9.

As to why your screen is displaying a stretched image and setting 1920x1200 @ 16:10 gives you black bars, I have no idea. It's probably something with the video card drivers. Or Windows thinks you have a different monitor.

Oh well, as long as you don't mind a slightly stretched picture, you're good to go. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

This is correct. I just checked and noticed that I do indeed have black bars at 1920x1200 @ 16:10. I never noticed them before.

This explains the OP's results. 16:9 will fill the screen, but the picture is slightly stretched vertically.

The game is made for a 16:9 aspect only. The video setting is called "Monitor Aspect" because it is used to tell the game the aspect of your monitor (as strange as it sounds, this information cannot be retrieved automatically by a game or other software, it can only be guessed from the desktop resolution).

If you have a 16:9 monitor, the game will fit the whole screen without black bars and without stretching. A 16:10 screen has more space vertically on the screen, so black bars are necessary to avoid stretching.

Then I suppose there's nothing wrong with my monitor, if you are experiencing the same issue on 16:10 aspect ratio.
I am surprised that you didn't notice it before, in my opinion this is very noticeable, lol. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

I mean, yeah I do see it is stretched to full screen. But I don't see any image quality being distorted. For me the quality seems the same as putting 16:10, but simply full screen stretched.

So I guess it is a 1920x1200 resolution filled in full screen. But I honestly don't see any worser picture quality than before. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

This seems to happen mostly with Ubisoft games.
I am playing Bad Company 2 and Crysis, mostly all of the games appear full screen.

I guess it is the way Ubisoft designed the game. Simply designed a game with a 1920x1200 resolution that is stretched to full screen.

But initially this game isn't designed to be full screen it seems like it is designed to have the black bars in the first place. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

If you look at most of the other games they display full screen in the first place.

Like mentioned above, it's likely due to the fact that this was originally a console game, which are designed for 16:9 and 1920x1080.

I don't find the black bars very noticeable, but I certainly notice the stretching. I'm sticking with 16:10. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

this blows. makes me really not want to play it. especially as the game came free with my new GPU to show it off - which i have to do in letterbox or stretched mode. I dont think so Ubi...glad i didnt pay for the game.
