View Full Version : SS Bretagne Message From BDU?

I recieved this message and wondered if any one can shed any light on it. No Patrol Square reference was given, and no orders as such. Is it a distress call? How would I find these co-ordinates? I'm (proudly) running GW:

From: Open Frequency
To: U48
SSS! 50.20N 12.45W SS Bretagne

I think it is a distress signal, when ships had been torpedoed they would emit an SSS broadcast indicating that they had been hit by a torpedo. It would be sent out in the clear in the hope any ship nearby could render assistance. Hence your message has NOT been sen to you by BDU, but caught in the open airwaves by your rad op - who was probably monitoring all frequencies as part of his duties.

The rad op's job is to send and recieve all transmissions and keep a log of all TX and RX's even though they are not intended for his boat. After receiving the message the navigator should then have the message to find out where the ship was located by using his own map with the grid squares.

The patrol grid square system employed by U boats would be unknown to anyone else unless those charts fell into enemy hands, the co-ordinates given are Lat and Long figures. I'm not sure where that would be in the Atlantic (I'm assuming it's the Atlantic) but anyone who has a working knowledge of ocean navigation would be able to help.

50 degrees 20 minutes North by 12 degrees 45 minutes West put me in the Czech Republic - route 219 slightly northeast of Nezdek. Maybe the Germans transported the ship there after they captured it? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

It would be here, if I'm posting the image right.

notice the map is 3d, so it's slightly bent, if you get what I mean...

Cool - did you do that off Google Earth? looks familiar.
I wonder why I got he radio message with those co-ordinates, when co-ordinates don't really feature in the game? anyways, I'm not complaining - today is the first day I've has some peace and quiet to really get into GW.

If I'm not mistaken, general shipping uses latitude and longitude coordinates.

traffic between u-boats and BDU, on the other hand, uses grid codes, since the allies have no clue what "Grid XY" means.

that's my reasoning, anyway
