View Full Version : Best flyable STOL plane in game.

I wonder what the best FLYABLE short field plane, currently, in he game is?

At first I figured it would be the Cr42/Gladiator/P-11 or something like that. But after some initial testing the way the brakes in game work I am now thinking it is likely some plane with tricycle gear so that you can slam on the brakes and not noseover. Maybe an early P-39.

Perhaps we could have a competition!

My first thought is Ju-87. By far, just hit the divebrakes... need some testing tho. Although tricycles are suitable for slaming the brakes hard.

Carrier ops of course out of competition http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

Right and it has to have wheels - No Me-163b Komet!

I think the TB-3 wins in this category. You can takeoff with almost no speed and if you time the landing right you can stop in no time at all as well...

Yeah an empty TB-3 gets up and down pretty quick! I guess if you lined up a bunch of planes with a known wingspan wingtip to wingtip along the side of a runway you could measure takeoff distance by counting planes - or better yet measure out wingspans, plant some banners at known intervals, and then eliminate the "measuring planes" - I'll have to jump into FMB and set something up!

A Storch takes off in something like 250ft. By far the shortest distance...

TB3 can take off, go into full loop and land before take off strip ends...only J35 might be better one day http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

My mate Bear_Boradin regailed me recently with a story that I think might win this -

B_Bs an avid aerobatic pilot; loves to climb into any old thing and wack about making airshow style manouevres (usually at CAA/FAA unapproved altitudes http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ).

Took a Yak-3 up and was merrily beating up an airfield. Pulling up from a (very) fast and (very) low pass he kicked the little yak (now rocketing heavenwards) into an upward spin - you know, put the stick in one corner and full rudder and see what happens!

Well, usually he falls into a downward spin as gravity wins the battle, applies full oppposite rudder and snaps out!

Except this time it doesnt; the yak drops over into a deadflat spin - he rides it in desperately trying all manner of control inputs to escape this situation till inevitably... he hits the ground.

However, thanks to the top like spin, his rate of descent was so low, that instead of the usual fiery oblivion that the rest of us would experience, the yak drops with a bang, both wings and the empennage fly off and the aircraft settles down with Bear experiencing a slightly reddened screen!

OMG! A vertical landing yak! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

You just know that you'd never replicate it in a hundred years - I tried a couple of times but never managed it!

Wow- usually you can recover from a flatened spin by either fully opening or fully closing the throttle, or cycling the throttle full open to full close a few times; though I guess if you have torque effects switched off this might not help http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif I love flying acro in PF - especially the J8!

Isn't it a bit odd that a flying chicken-shed like the TB-3 could take off at such low speeds? It's strange that the largest, (heaviest?) flyable aircraft is also one of the slowest. It's not exactly powerful either....

Well I've done some testing, and if anyone cares, the plane that I can land shortest is the Stuka, 25% fuel and empty. The TB3 rolls and rolls and rolls so thats not it, at least for me.

I'd have to go with the Gladiator... you can come in with a Very slow speed approach and make a short touch down.
Most of the other aircraft would stall long before hand.
Give it a try on a Carrier. Take off is easy but the landing is a bit more of a challenge without a Tail Hook.

Some of you must have not flown the TB-3. It can take off almost vertically.

Me-163. As soon you put 100% and pull back the thing start to climb. Even with a little or nothing of propultion its designs keep in on the air.
On landing, if you aproach with 2 km away from landing sector, it stop in a short path.

If flyable, the Storch will be the best.
