Hi Ivan. Thanks for saying hello. We haven't chatted in a long time.

As a follow up to this thread, I have been in touch with 2 radio ham operators about getting a used 80ft tower. One of them said he would get on his "net" and see what he could find for me. The other one, who lives in my area, advised me to wait a couple of months before doing anything as he knows of 2 new towers being built to the south of us.They would have a better line of sight and if a tower was required, it would likely be no more than 40ft.

He also said the new K-band satellite service will be national on July 1 and although it won't help on-line gaming, it will radically change the competitive environment for high speed internet.

I think I will take his advice and wait.

Having lived in dialup no mans land myself BG I'm thrilled for you M8. Going to be a real kicker when you drop in to the -HH- server and your flying with a 120- ping.

Some folks who have never been in a really remote area can't understand a person getting excited about 300 kbs. They have quite obviously never tried to DL one of the bigger patches at 18.3 to maybe 23 on a good day http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Looking forward to you dropping in our TS when you all tricked out and flying smooth. Your going to love it buddy. S'

Man! I thought the grand in upgrades I made were tought to swallow. How do you sneak that one by the bean counter?

Good luck though, because the game and more importantly the community is worth it.

04-21-2005, 08:42 AM
Okay, I have seen BG's mansion in the woods.

It is about 20 bedrooms, massive home theatre room, kitchen larger than my house, every bell and whistle.
Only house that I have seen that is big enough to have an ATM machine in it. Now BG in his former life was a banker who first introduced ATM's to Canada, so I don't know if it is a souvenier, or if he uses it as his own personal machine.
Located on about 100 acres with what, BG, five fishing ponds? (BG is too modest to call them what they really are: lakes)
The guy has a collection of hardware and real-life Tonka Toys that would make Home Depot and Caterpiller envious.

So an 80 foot wireless tower would fit right into the "BG Estates" I think. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Just camouflage it as a Totem Pole so you have an easy explanation to the wife when she asks what it is...

04-21-2005, 10:01 AM
I wanna play at BG's house!!!!!

04-21-2005, 10:03 AM
What a hoot you are JP! Of course he is exaggerating folks ...... just a little.

Made contact with some radio ham operators this morning and one of them has a 45ft tower for sale. Too bad it is only 35ft short. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

And Udidtoo. I can hardy wait to hit something I actually aim at instead of a quarter mile behind it. That's what happens with a 1800 ping.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gifSorry to hear that m8. Sounds like you might want to marry a honey with LOTS OF MONEY. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif But don't give up. Good thing's come to those who waits. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

I have finally been able to locate a used 80ft commercial grade tower at a cheap price. This gives me just enough incentive to go ahead with high speed wireless and that means I don't have to move. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

04-29-2005, 09:40 AM
Great news blairgowrie!

I've got a brother out of cable or DSL range in the swamps of Lousy-ana. I'll email him with your solution. Maybe he can do the same.

I was thinking after reading your original post, that I know golfers who spend at least that much annually on their hobby. Kind of brings it into perspective. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Looking forward to seeing you at HyperLobby.

04-29-2005, 01:29 PM
Thanks DxyFlyr.

Yes, I quite agree with you about comparing it to a golf fees. I have friends who pay $6,000 a year annual membership with a $200 monthly bar minimum and that's only for 7 months golf.

The secret to the wireless solution is to find a cheap tower and hopefully one that is a lot less than 80ft. Mine has to look over the tops of big maple trees between me and the sending tower about 14 miles away.

Just heard in the last few minutes, they will deliver the tower tomorrow. Yipeee!

And yes, I can now get on Hyperlobby without being booted.

04-29-2005, 01:46 PM
On second thought, maybe you should move.

12 months golf here. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

05-04-2005, 11:43 AM
Tower was delivered a couple of days ago. Tomorrow, we will pour the pad and install the first section of tower 2ft into the concrete. It will need a week to set and then the rest of tower will be assembled on the ground and raised by crane.

I'll post pics at each step of the way.

05-04-2005, 11:55 AM
If this is for Satelite type service, it may do you no good due to delay of signal, so check it out. With this game, no matter how fast the download time, if it is delayed, the game looks at it as a lost packet.

As far as the Bancrupcy thing goes, look at it this way. You could live where I do and get cable IP service for $60.00 a month. You also get to live in an environment where your daughter might get grabbed by a couple of guys, mugged for the $18.00 in her wallet and the cell phone and then they shoot her in the head just for kicks even though she did not resist. She's ok by the way. This happened to be one time that being my child paid off. apparently, she inherited my thick skull and the .32 bullet bounced off and only caused a flesh wound and a concusion. Wanna trade?

05-04-2005, 11:56 AM
By the way, those are great dogs you have there. Very loyal to one person and very smart.

05-04-2005, 04:15 PM
Hi LB,

No,it's line of sight, microwave to a tower 15 miles away. They come and take a GPS and elevation reading, plug it into a software programe and this gives them all the elevations between me and their tower. This tells them if I need a tower and if so what height. There is no latency and it is similar to Udititoo wireless connection except he has what is called a dynamic IP and he can't host. I am told that I will have a static connection. Upload and download speeds are quoted at 1 MB. (I hope to become the resident high speed wireless expert after this adventure).

Sorry to hear about your daughter's tragic experience. Thank goodness she survived the brutal attack. I am sure you felt like eviscerating the b****rd who did it.

I have passed on your kind comments to my two dogs. Yes, they are the smartest dogs I have ever been associated with. They are cross springer spaniels and border collie and although they are brother and sister, they have totally different colour schemes and personalities. We got them from a local pound as very young pups and named them Bonnie and Clyde. They are now 6 years old and are adorable and loyal. They spend all day with me on our 112 acres.

05-04-2005, 04:48 PM
Congrats BG! Glad to see you on your way to your high speed connection. I know you are in great shape m8, but let the riggers do the high hanging on your tower. HEHEHE I'm also glad to hear you will be able to host, unlike Udidtoo. If you can get out of the woods from cutting down trees long enough to take a break one day, jump in the comms server and holler. We haven't spoken in quite sometime. I'd like to listen to your adventures of obtaining a high speed connection. Very cool m8! You may find yourself hitting every thing you aim at, an ace and didn't know it. HEHEHE

05-04-2005, 05:30 PM
Hi Quazi,

Don't worry,I am not going up 90 ft. That is for a younger man with no fear of heights. Although I have a pilot's licence and don't have any fear of heights when I fly, it's totally different when I try to climb from the ground up. I was once with a crew shooting commercials near the Golden Gate Bridge and climbed up a cliff face to get photographs. I'll never forget the call "get a cherry picker to get the client down". I became completly frozen and although they didn't need a cherry picker to get me down I learned a valuable lesson. I don't like heights.

It's turning out to be more expensive than I thought but the end is in sight..........I think.

I thought the concrete would be about $300 but it seems it will be 3 times that. Ah well, it's only money.

I also have the feeling that once I get high speed I still will not be able to shoot straight.

But it is the journey that is important right?

I am enjoying this process.

05-04-2005, 09:21 PM
Actually. I think in the end, you will find you are a much better online pilot than you think you are. Same is true of EMann as well. When Udidtoo got his high speed, I had to stop just lazily increasing my turn rate slowly and watch him shoot just behind me... that all ended with his new connection and he found out in short order that Luckyboy ain't so hard to shoot down after all!

Glad to hear it will be for the good and not one of those semi-uselss deals. If you've got a close neighbor, maybe you can LAN your system to them for a small fee to help defray costs.

05-04-2005, 10:10 PM
All hail BG!

Who else could convince a wife to spend that kind of money just so he could shoot straighter on-line!

Hats off to you BG!

05-05-2005, 01:02 AM
Nice Sea Fury there JP. One of my all times favourites.

As far as the wife is concerned, she uses our dial up connection for business. After a particularly frustrating day trying to send big files over the net she said to me "I don't care how much it costs, just get it"

That's all I needed.

05-05-2005, 03:02 PM
Here are some of the pictures taken today. My friends and me poured the main pad for the tower, a hole 5 x 5 x 4ft deep

And then three piers for the guy wires. These holes were 2 x 2 x 4ft deep. At the last minute, I decided to get a 40ft conveyor belt which cost an extra $100, but it was well worth it. It was able to reach all the holes and we didn't need to use a wheel barrow. We used 6 meters of cement 3000 strength. The first section of tower was placed in the cement and was plumbed with spirit levels and checked every hour for 3 hours. The rest of the tower will be added in another week.

05-05-2005, 04:03 PM

I live in a city-centre (not a big city though) with all of it's advantages as in having everything nearby... (Like, "Oh man, I forgot the salt/bolt/pot for this job, oh well, I'll just walk out and get me one" and I do walk out of the house and get me one) (Oh, and 'pot' as in the things that are used in joysticks...)

But this looks like yer living in the middle of, well nowhere!

Looks tempting http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif ...

Have Fun!

05-05-2005, 05:11 PM
The impressive part comes next week when we try to hang another 80ft on to the base. I just hope that we got the bottom part of the tower right. If we are out by a quarter of an inch at the bottom, it will be over a foot at the top. And then it will be the leaning tower of Walters Falls.

We do live on 112 acres in the middle of nowhere. I have lived in big cities all my life like London, England and Toronto, Canada and there is nothing like this life. It is complete bliss. Well on second thoughts, I would like to have chinese and pizza delivery.

05-05-2005, 06:59 PM
Man things are looking good BG. If you would have done this last year I was still able then and heights....bah. No one ever got hurt falling. Landing is another matter all together.

We may not have pizza and takeout right next door BG but I bet between you and I we have more stars at night than some of those city fellows new exsisted.

05-05-2005, 08:19 PM
You a smart boy for getting the conveyor. Not only do you not have to hassle with carting it around and cleaning up after, it is also faster and most importantly, it saves on the ole back. even if it isn't your back in question here, it reduces your liabilities, so very, very smart move on your part.

I see the tower, I see the house. Just one question... where's your outhouse?

05-05-2005, 09:58 PM
That is the outhouse...for the guest house.

The outhouse for the main house is much, much bigger and nicer.
You can't see it in the picture, but it is back a bit more in the woods...just past BG's 18 hole golf course and beside his hockey arena.

05-07-2005, 09:37 AM
And here is BG's tower when done...

We call him Canada's Bill Gates

05-07-2005, 09:42 AM
And here all along I thought that was his outhouse!

05-07-2005, 11:24 AM
no, the two smaller buildings to the left are the outhouses...his and hers.

05-13-2005, 11:38 PM
Just bumping this thread back up to the front for BG. He is up and running and said he was going to post more pics. Jensenpark and I hung out with him on TS long enough to find out he needs to configure his router before he can host or join. Hey BG, I just wanted to save you the trouble of searching for it. Congrats m8!

05-13-2005, 11:47 PM
Way hey BG. Just saw your Yahoo messages m8. Thats fantabulous. If you are still having issues just drop in the Cantena and if Tim,me and you all put our heads together we'll still = a halfwit but I bet we can get the kinks out.

05-14-2005, 09:45 AM
After some anxious anticipation, the day came to add the rest of the tower. The guys from FX Communications arrived at 10am and got to work right away. After watching them for a couple of minutes it was obvious they knew their stuff. Poor crane operator got himself lost on the country roads but finally showed up. He also turned out to be first class and the tower went up on the second attempt at a lift. He didn't quite have enough height and had to lay the tower back down and add another 18ft of boom. After he left, the guys from FX completed the install. The wire carrying the signal comes into the electrical room in the basement and connects to a router. We are using 2 PC's a desktop and a laptop and we bought wireless cards for them. The router send a wireless signal direct to the PC's so there was no need to fish wires. Some minor glitches but by 6pm, I finally got high speed on my desktop. WOW! What a difference. Not sure yet what the upload speed is but the down is 1.2mbps.
Internet connection is fine but can't host or join FB. I can receive e-mails on Outlaw Express but can't send. I spoke to my IP provider Bell Sympatico and they walked me through all the options for resolution but no success. They are sure it's my firewall on the router. Quazi's also thinks that is my host/join problem. I called FX and got the password for the router and have gained access to the firewall. I will hold of Quazi and Udiditoo this morning and see if they can help me set it up via TS.

Now that I am enjoying at least some of the benefits of high speed, I have to say that I have no regrets about doing it. It was a little more money than I planned for. I thought concrete was going to cost about $300 but it turned out to be 3 times that. Then I had to buy wire and big O (conduit to run the wire through) and a whole bunch of other little expenses. FX is coming back on Monday to do some minor tweaks. Good people who know what they are doing.

If anyone has any questions I will be pleased to answer them.

Tower is laid out and bolted together. 3 Guy wires are attached.

The crane starts to tip so I have to bring in my backhoe and apply down pressure with the front bucket.

Tower is now bolted to the base successfully.

Connecting one of the guy wires.

Some of the locals come out to watch the fun.

Picture of me climbing the tower to point the antenna. (I wish it were me!).

Pointing the antenna towards the "mother" tower 20kms away. Signal will go 15 kms and the addition of an amplifier adds another 10kms to range

The small box on the left is an amplifier and the other is a bridge.

05-14-2005, 11:18 AM
You really shouldn't worry about the possibility of falling... it's that sudden stop at the end that you need to watch out fer!

Growing up in the middle of nothin' makes it so I may be able to give you some transmission tower hints and help troubleshooting.

05-14-2005, 01:38 PM
I hope it Works!

I heard from someone when it gets hit by lighting you get lighting fast speed but I did not seen this with my own eyes.. Never seen or spoke to him anymore. Weird.

Impressive stuff and allot of work, hope you all happy with it when it works.

05-14-2005, 01:45 PM
I am pleased to announce that I just heard from BG that the system is now working on all fronts and that he was able to connect to HL!

Pinged in at 82.

BG is the only here I know who's ping matches his age. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

And I'm sure he is going to claim it matches my IQ.

Well done on this project, BG! You are great flying with on dial up - will only be better on high speed.

05-24-2005, 06:02 PM
It took a while but here are the results.

05-24-2005, 06:43 PM
That's lookin' mighty fine Blair. And, you were really smooth last night. The only problem now is I can't go to the pub and toss down a pint while you're loading the missions! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

05-24-2005, 06:45 PM
Thanks for your comments Beebop. It has been a long haul but I think we are finally there.

05-24-2005, 06:48 PM
Out of respect for all that you've gone through to get online, I guess we shouldn't shoot you down.

I will never claim to be the world's finest pilot. Just look the other way when I fly by and you will have my heartfelt thanks.

05-24-2005, 07:33 PM
So we finally get to see the real Blair, not the one that happened 400 milliseconds ago...

05-25-2005, 10:23 AM
BG. Wow mate, that's commitment. Now you're sure your not trying to compensate for something.......? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

05-25-2005, 03:06 PM
Great news Jim... thanks for the photos of the progress http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

05-25-2005, 06:28 PM
I will tell you.

It's a lot easier to do a reformat with high speed access.

05-25-2005, 06:41 PM
Yup, I can just hear BG now:

"you call that a wireless tower? Now THIS is a wireless tower".

And Lucky Boy will be by soon to claim the tower is part of the conspiracy to get rid of him.

05-25-2005, 06:44 PM
Who is Luckyboy?

05-25-2005, 06:51 PM
An apt response...

everything else working?
