Just FYI, but Spitfires have a round mirror.

Yeh - all the Spits I've flown have a round mirror - I thought maybe I'd missed out on a model with a rectangular mirror somewhere along the line. The cockpit frame looks decidedly Spitfire, though - if it isn't, I'd be really interested to know what..?
Alternatively, maybe this is some Photoshop or such kind of trickery.
Anyone else ever seen this? Been flying IL2 for 7 years now, and never seen this...

ok, i just tried to make track but there are no head movements showing on track ... but there is while playing (strange). Seams to be that pilots head follows position of flight leader so when you try this don't choose first plane in formation.

I swear it's not a trick .....please someone confirm this. Feeling like just saw a UFO and nobody believes me http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

Ahhh, missed the Mk. V LF with rectangular mirror. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_redface.gif

As for the pilot, the skin looks like it is not quite fitting the 3D model correctly. Almost like the head is too big as he looks around. It would be interesting to see if the default pilot shows in the mirror when he looks up.

As far as I recall, the in-game mirror does show most of what is behind in the detailed mode, so maybe because the pilot skin is not quite placed on the pilot correctly, we're seeing the parts of the skin that are actually sitting in front of the mirror's view.

Just brainstorming a bit here...well, in my case a brain drizzle, but you get the point. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Not a trick or shopped. This has been around since the Spit was introduced. What you are seeing is the animation sequence of head following. If you run in autopilot the head will track the leader or enemy.

Manual control of head movement by mouse or tir or such will not move the head.

P.S. I know the 38L has the same effect.

Wow... I can't believe I never knew about this before (I have been playing since FB as well). But then again I guess I don't spend much time flying around sitting in the cockpit with autopilot on. Still, nice find! I guess it's right up there with the TB-3 pencil as far as the attention to detail goes.

I guess calling it an "eastern egg" was unintentionally appropriate in this case. A little gem added by the developers, working from an eastern nation... ha ha.

So there we have it...
7 years on and still seeing new things crop up for the first time (in my case, anyway)
Well spotted, fly_zo!
I have a few pilot skins which I noticed once, can't remember now, might have been a Spit as well,or a FW190, where the pilot's head actually slightly sticks through the cockpit!
Not at home now, but will post a screenie when I am, showing this. Watch for my post - btw, anyone else seen that before? (pilot head sticking through pit glass - VERY slightly though!)

I never doubted your word fly_zo, I was just stunned I'd never had that occur in my experience---I would have gotten a huge kick out of it. I'm wondering if that effect came with 46? I haven't been using IL-2 much at all since 46.

well i did mess around with autopilot (checkin out my new spit skin) but after continuing my flight head just stuck in that position during rest of the mission. I guess that "glitch" forced me to finally notice the darn thing

I'm quite amazed that it shows.
I would have thought that the mirror view was generated seperately, but it seems like it's taken (and cropped) from a 'static camera' placed in the mirrors position.
