Make sure it's the 'Pacific Fighters' one (the one with the Japanese plane on the cover).
This is the latest major version, and all patches are installed over this. The patches are just minor fixes and add extra planes. The game is just as good without them, not like SH3 where we needed patches to get the game running properly.

Yep, I was testing a map for on-line play, and thought that this scene was cool enough for a quickie.

Nice clip Van, i thought you were going to sink the battleship http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif It was a suprise ending for me.

Makes me want to install forgotten battles again. So many games, so little time http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

At first glance I did not see van Jast as the author of this thread. My eyes lit on the line, JU88 attacks... and so I thought it was the forum member JU-88 pulling off another wild one, a gunnery duel with a BB.

Again, as always, nice work Freddie. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I'd dropped all the bombs up river on a troop column and thought it would be 'nice' to see how close I could get to the BShip. If I had bombs it would not have made a difference as when I'd just passed the hangers my screen went black (Pilot killed) and from there the plane was a drogue.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is IL2? That clip was cool as hell. Been playing WWII combat sims since the heady days of ... oh man, I can't even remember the name of it. Pacific Fighters? All I remember was that I played it on a 486DX in the college computer lab back in 1990... carried my pilot on a 3 1/2 inch hard plastic floppy.

Ah, the good ol' days.

BTW and OT

@ Vanjast

What happened to your signature.

I can only see a black box with guidlines regarding the height and width.
Since I know each computer takes the graphics from it`s own tmp folder it just might be that our beloved Ubi stuff made some changes and....
well can you see mine?

Ah, the good ol' days.

I played Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe back in the 386/486 days. Got rid of it in a garage sale and it was the second biggest regret of my life. [First was breaking up with my first girlfriend many moons ago]

I think the game you are thinking about was Aces of the Pacific. I've still got a copy here in my software museum.

"Aces of the Pacific"

Maybe that's it. Used to play US fighters, a Dauntless dive bomber, and the Avenger torpedo bomber (which kinda sucked). Fought off Zekes, Kates, and Vals.

I can remember that you'd get medals, and the only way to get the Congressional Medal of Honor was to kill all 9 (or was it 12?) approaching Japanese who were trying to attack your convoy. I remember finally doing it, and looking around for someone to high-five... but the computer lab was empty.

I played "Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe" and it was great. Loved those rockets! So primative, but so fun. You had to aim by eye back then.

Which was the British/German-based game where you'd campaign for either the Axis or Allied side (maybe it was SWotL)? The campaign went well or badly depending upon how you did during bombing runs of factories, airfields, etc...etc...?

SWotL extrapolated your performance to the rest of the war effort. If you, as the American, completed a successful raid, all the other raids did well. One way I ensured this was to escort a group of B-17's and after clearing all opposition I would dive for strafing runs. This worked well on targets such as railyards and airbases. You could also play as the German, so that your successful defence translated into success for the whole of the Reich. One thing I would do early on was switch my factories to producing FW-190's instead of 109's and then jets and jet engines when they were available.

Earlier, in the days of my Commodore Amiga 500 I was fond of playing Their Finest Hour. It was similar to SWotL, in that personal success or failure was also extrapolated onto the whole campaign. You could fly fighters for the RAF or fighter or bombers for the Luftwaffe. Around that time I also played Battlehawks 1942, Japanese-American naval aviation combat. Oddly enough even though the graphics were primitive by today's standards, these games were highly enjoyable.

Yes yes yes!!! It was Aces of the Pacific. I just looked it up, and you're right - that was the game. God I loved that game. Best combat sim of its time.

Aces over Europe was it's successor. Loved that one too.

I've got the whole "Aces" series in a box under my desk. It also includes Aces of the Deep, which was the best sub sim for years until the SH series came along.

Remember Silent Service II ?

It was my first PC sub game after playing Red Storm Rising and UP Periscope on the C-64 and Torpedo Run on the C-16 (my first subgame). http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Had that one, and another one by Epyx, IIRC, Submarine Simulator. Very blocky graphics, but still a heck of a lot of fun.

DYNAMIX were to boyos of the 'Aces' series.

Does anybody still have that 'Wolfpack' sub game, where you could play surface ships or subs?

PM me http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

All good games. Silent Service on the C64... man. Hadn't thought of that in a while.

Hey, way back when the only PC's were IBM's and a color monitor meant cyan/pink, there was a cool sub sim whose graphics were nothing but lines and dots. Longer lines represented bigger ships, dots represented torpedoes. Anyone remember it?

vanjast
02-13-2006, 02:17 PM
Hells Yes!!
You were assigned a grid (out of 12 or 16) to patrol. the map contained 2 or 3 islands, and a convoy of ships (4 - 6 in total) made route trails that you could use to attack. When you hit a ship the it just exploded with a series of lines.
there were times you had to rescue a downed pilot off an island or drop a spy.

Graphics weren't great but the game had all the mission action. which is a bit lacking in SH3.

"When you hit a ship the it just exploded with a series of lines"

Hahahaha!!! Yeah, I'd forgotten about that part. I remember spending HOURS stalking a carrier one night, and my mom thought I was crazy staring at a bunch of lines and dots.

But then, hey - back then that was graphics. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

"Dear! I'm worried about our son vozzek6969, he's staring at these lines all day and when they go in all directions, he jumps for joy."

I played a Silent Service game on the Amiga. I don't recall if it was the first or not - it was circa 1986. I won an SS tournament at a game con in Los Angeles... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
