View Full Version : How about a good WW2 tank sim?

Once BoB:SOW is 'in the bag' Oleg should produce a good, proper WW2 tank sim in the same genre as Il2, BoB/BoB2 IMO. There's been nothing released since the original 'Panzer Elite' (last century! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) which in its time was a great sim where the player could jump into the position of any tank crew member (driver, gunner etc). I don't understand why, with the amount of interest there is out there for WW2 sims, land based tank warfare hasn't been exploited. Unless of course something's on the horizon....?!

For the most bang for your buck, you won't find a better tank sim than RED ORCHESTRA, published by Tripwire Interactive. It is, IMHO, the 'IL2' of ground combat sims- better than CoD, DoD, and all others.

RO focuses on the Eastern Front pitting the German forces against the Red Army; it features VERY detailed infantry combat as well as the best tank modeling you'll find anywhere in a mainstream game. You have a huge selection of tanks to choose from: everything from the tiny T-70's and PzKfw III's to the IS2's and Tiger 1's. Infnatry-wise you have just about every major infantry system in the war: Kar-98K to Moisin-Nagant 91/30's to PPsH's and all sorts of Heavy MG's and grenades.

If you haven't seen RO, I urge you to check out their site at www.redorchestragame.com (http://www.redorchestragame.com) - take a look at some fo the screenshots and download their trailers- you will be AMAZED. (And, like me, you'll be drooling for the day when a game can combine both the ILs system and RO system into one massive sim!)

Of course, you may LIKE the abstract tanks in CoD- Your Mileage May Vary, as always!

as well as the best tank modeling

WHAT tank modeling?
That game is a SHOOTER game, nothing else.

If you are looking for a TANK game you are in the wrong place.
Played the demo few times:
- to kill a Tiger with the IS-2 you need to hit it ALWAYS twice. Never once, never three times, doens't matter if you it hull front, side, rear, turret, whatever.
Oh, and on the first hit it starts smoking like a piece of sliced break stuck in a toaster. Second shot kills it. Always.
- Very funny are the buring tanks driving around the battlefiled after being hit and happily fighting on. Nice flames out of engine compartemnet yet tehy drive on and shoot and fight as if their arse wouldn't be on fire.

Silliest tank game I have tried ever.

World War 2 Online (http://www.wwiionline.com) has a very good tank model as far as damage and realism goes. You get get tracked, gun disabled each member can get killed or injured. You can also partner with a friend to make an elite team. Use the main gun or MG. German, British and French tanks are modelled. From the P2C to the Tiger, A13 to the Churchill 7 or the S35 to the Sherman 76 and lots in between!

Lie in wait as part of a defence or attack Blitzkrieg style!

wwiionline is not perfect by any means but if you like as close to realism as you get fighting with other real people... it's a pretty good experience IMHO.

I fantasize about a modernized version of Panzer Commander. Was a great, fun sim, with a fair misn editor and you could make your own small maps. The worse thing about it was the useless brakes. Many types of tanks both east and west, and in North Africa. Crude by today's standards, but it would make a great sim if just modernized a bit. I liked it alot more than Panzer Elite.

I can't understand why the lapse in this genre for so many yrs.
