View Full Version : Asymmetric gun recoil

I was flying around in the IL-2 Type 3 today, and a flak burst took out my left cannon. While flying along in a steady line, I fired full guns, and I was surprised to see my plane whip its nose to the right. I tried it a few more times, and it wasn't a one-time thing. The recoil of having a 20mm cannon on the right wing fire, but not on the left, was causing a yaw rate equal to full rudder!

I thought it was pretty cool. Nice attention to detail. Has anyone else noticed this? I know firing guns while parked can make you roll backward, but I never knew the effect of firing guns asymmetrically.

Yes, had this happen many times. Damned annoying when you plenty of ammo left but you can't hit a barn door with it!

I wouldn't join any club that would have ME as member!

yeah its bad, i remember in previous versions with the il2 if one cannon was damaged you can hold down the trigger and do a complete 360 and continue flying forward. then you let go of the trigger it whips back -360 flying forward again

I love the game but theres alot of things that bother me about it.

Had one cannon jam on a IIc Hurri. Even with one of 2 on a wing out I still had heavy yaw

either do short bursts or hold it down and correct it.
bit oT but stuka g has no asymetric recoil normaly, it has naff all effect on your aim, bit of a shame cos other planes...
(i mean with 2 cannonsfireing, u dont slew about)

I've had the same thing happen with damage done to one set of guns on a P-40: I had to walk the guns onto the target to compensate. It was gret, love that kind of attention to detail!

I often think the whole world is out to get me, but then I remember that some of the smaller nations are neutral.

Lead, it's similar to the effect of having a small rocket engine on the right side of the wing - the Vya 23mm is not a small gun, and the location of the guns make it such that if you loose one, the other has plenty of torque to swing you around.
