I want to torpedo the enemy's carrier! How could there not be a flyable torpedo plane when playing in the coral sea map. Also, does anyone know of a mod\patch\hack that will let me fly any flyable plane in the coral sea map (instead of the obvious carrier based aircraft)? Just once I'd like to try to land a B-25 on the deck of a carrier, or maybe a P-38 or P51, that would rule.

There's no 'crack' for the Coral Sea map in QMB, but you can easily change the flyable aircraft from one of the training single missions by using the Full Mission Builder. Just open the mission in FMB, click on a waypoint for the player's aircraft, and make it something else in the objects menu.

I understand that most of the TBDs that saw combat ended up on the bottom of the Pacific

Yes at the Battle of Midway, Lt. George Gay was one of the only survivors of Torpedo 8 and he was shot down and watched the entire Battle from the water after he went down.

At the Coral Sea the TBD was very effective, they did a text book attack on Shoho coming in from both sides of her. They also had fighter protection and co-ordinated their attck with the Dauntless dive bombers. There were only 6 Japanese fighters defending the Shoho also.In this engagement the only Japanese ship hit was Shoho.
At Midway they went in basically alone and couldn't co-ordinate the attack,no real fighter protection od divebombers attacking the same time they were sitting ducks for the Japanese fighters, but their sacrfice won the battle as the Japanese fighter cover was all below altitude and couldn't defend from the divebombers.

From a Spanish child song:

'Where are the keys, mah-tah-ree-leh-ree-leh-ree-leh?
Where are the keys, mah-tah-ree-leh-ree-leh-ron?
In the deep of the sea, mah-tah-ree-leh-ree-leh-ree-leh!
In the deep of the sea, mah-tah-ree-leh-ree-leh-ron!
Cheem-pom!"
