Since Chess is complaining about us taking over his D&D thread I thought I'll just start one for NWN. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Gab and others, don't forget to get the latest patches/updates for the game when you install it. I believe the latest patch is version 1.61. The game does have an automatic update feature on the main menu you can use or you can go to the website and download and install it yourself.

Thanks Ron! I have gone thru the Academy and kicked some serious Boot-eye!!! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/icon_twisted.gif

I'm even pretty happy with the character generator (Okay, I a Half-orc in the game...but a troll at heart!)

When we play the server version, I think I'll try something different...a halfling theif or a Dwarf Fighter...

While I have an idea what race and class I would like to be I'm going to wait and see what the rest of you choose and then pick something that will help round out the party.

What I've got my mind on right now is that Red Dragon Disiple sorcerer I was telling CK about. It's a new race and looks pretty cool. But if others want to be a mage I'll pick something else.

Thanks, Dragon-mage-wizard-ma-bob!

Thank you Gab. I just updated mine to 1.61 Monday. Apparently they had a new come out since then that takes it to 1.62. I wouldn't have caught that if you hadn't of mentioned it. Thanks.

Just FYI, these patches aren't to fix any problems, BioWare has a good track record with releasing games that work. These patches are just tweaks and add-ons that make the game better because BioWare is a company that cares. A lot of the tweaks are at the suggestions of us, the consumers. It's a shame that most game publishers/developers aren't like BioWare.

I gotta tell you, I'm impressed so far. Seems like they have figured out that by impressing the customer by staying on top of the games updates and fixes, they can throw in little ads for other software releases...and that is an arrangement I don't mind.

If you're refering to the 'Shadows of Unrentide' and 'Hordes of the Underdark' games, they are add-on packs for NWN. Everyone is raving about "Hordes of the Underdark' (HotU). One of the guys I was working with at Gateway kept bringing his laptop to work and showing me scenes from it. That's when I first saw a Red Dragon Disciple. He had a female one and she looked tough. She took out five opponents without breaking a sweat. Unfortunately you need to have the HotU expansion pack to get it. Mine should be in today. As long as we all have the same, latest version of the game, I can use the Red Dragon charactor in our game without y'all having HotU. I can't wait to try him out.

Ron, saw both these add-ons tonight. $30 a piece! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif Think I'll see how we do with the first part of the game (Although, someone close to me thought ONE would make a good gift)
Which should I get first?

Word on the street is that Hordes of the Underdark is the better one. Shadows of Undrentide came first though. My choice is to play the games in order. Reasons why: The games progress in diffuculty with your charactor. You carry your charactor from NWN over to SoU then from SoU to HotU. Each game is progressively more difficult and requires your charactor to be of higher levels. You don't have to do this of course. You can create a new charactor from scratch for each game. I just think it's more rewarding to start a charactor from the beginning and watch him/her develop. It feels kinda cheating to create a charactor that's already 10th level, makes me feel like I'm missing something.

Shadow of Undrentide it is then> I feel the same way about earning the character levels. And the fun of developing my character.

I have already encountered one deadly trap that called for my resurrection. Didn't see it coming. Ha! I didn't expect it but I will be more careful in the future. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I've played NWN only halfway thru before I got sidetracked with other games. I'm going to start over and play it thru again but I'm waiting on the expansion games to come in first. Because of the weather we've had the past two days my order has been sitting in the Greensboro, NC UPS hub. The reason I'm waiting is because the expansion games add more content to the original game also (like the Red Dragon Disciple class). Building a charactor now without the expnsions installed may lock me out of some of these extras without having to create a new charactor.

Yea , the second x-pak has all the stuff the first has , I think , and it adds skills and feats plus allows you to go to 40th lvl . The draw back is that you do need a high end computer to run it . { which I lack http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif }

The on-line game plays with quite a different " feel " then the solo game . I have never finished the solo game , although I have started it twice . http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The on-line games run from personal servers . Each have their own DMs and server . Each have their own " house rules ". So it may take a little time finding a game that you all like . { unless one of you run the game } . Each game also allows their owe number of players , so the better games tend to fill up quickly .

Without giving away too much , NWNs is very much a game of skills and feats , and items . Most people appear to play muli-class characters . And you can save your skill points up . { which allows you to put up a class skill without putting many levels into that class .

And as Gab has found , having a few thief abilities is nice to have . http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

kreeden, so you've played NWN multiplayer before?
I'm really just guessing about how it works based on what I can read in the NWN forums. From what I understand, we can get a party together and play the single player NWN game as a multiplayer, we don't really need a DM. I was going to use my computer as the game server and have everyone log in direct to my computer over the internet (myself included) for a private game. Bypassing Gamespy and other NWN servers. Will this work fine? ANy thing you can tell us? Should Gab and I try acouple of test runs (Gab and myself are the only ones who have the game at the moment I think)?

kreeden

Yea , that works too . http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif But someone has to be the server no matter how you play muli-player .

Yes , I have played through Gamespy . Without the x-paks . Had quite a few crushes though . I need to upgrade my computer and get high speed interenet . http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Now I have never been the server for the game , but the way I understand it , if you are the server , you are considered the DM . You get to set the gme rules . Things like experience learnt , how often characters can rest , if the characters have to eat and level restrictions on items and the like . Of course , I would think there is a default setting for all that . http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It should work fine Ron . Although test runs are always a good idea . http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif And personally I feel that the experience is a little low in the game { about 1/10th I believe }, but you may not want to play with that for awhile . Full experience doesn't work too well either , as your characters go up much too fast .

Once you get use to it , you can play around with it Ron . It is amazing how much lee-way they gave the players in the game . It can be the close thing to table top playing I have ever seen . Have fun . http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Well, maybe this evening (Sunday.)

I'm taking my girlfriend to see "Sweeny Todd" this afternoon, dinner this evening and, as I don't have my kids this weekend, SHE is expecting a romantic weekend.

While you're eating all that cake by yourself (and should you really be doing that?) I'll be playing all three NWN games. :P

Hordes of the Underdark came with a handy little booklet that lets you store all three NWN CDs, Shadows of Undrentide CD, and HotU Cd in. Now instead of having to keep track of each game's disks seperately it's like a boxed set. They are all in the same container. Pretty neat and awful nice of BioWare to do something like this.

Boy, you're a real charmer this week, ain'tcha? :P

And I'll have you know that my physician has, in fact, advised me to include more cake in my diet. At my last check-up he said, "PX, You are so svelt and fabulously beautiful, that you actually qualify as a public health and safety hazzard -- so many men are stunned out of their wits by your glorious beauty that they hyperventilate or fall over faint as soon as they lay eyes on you." (of course, he was wearing dark glasses as he was saying this to protect his eyes from my radiance) "So I will have to prescribe cheesecake every day."

"But doc," I said, "I'm lactose intolerant."

"That's ok," he said, "really, any cake will do."

So there. :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P

Hey, I've skimmed through. Not too many characters suggested yet. I usually like to play a cleric/paladin/weapons master so I can do that. Plus it's fun. I don't play arcane magic users very well. I have played an arcane archer though if y'all would prefer that. It would most likely look something like: Cleric/sorcerer/arcane archer.

Gabe, I'd get HotU before SoU unless you really want the Holy Avenger (Yeah!). You are supposed to start a new character for SoU and take that into HotU, but you don't have to do that. NWN is a stand alone and the character from there is not intended to go into SoU or HotU. Does that make any kind of sense at all?

Do you know how to set up the multiplayer game? Ron and I tried the other night. I'm hoping we can try again this week, maybe Thursday evening (kids and homework most of the week.)

Helva, you mean you can't use the charactor you create in the first game in the two expansions? I was planning on starting over with a human sorcerer and play him thru all three games. Building him up to be a Red Dragon Disciple. I won't be allowed to do that? If not, well that just sucks. Part of the fun is using the same caractor and watching him grow.

Anyway, for our game I don't have to be a sorcerer if someone else was considering to be an arcane mage. As I stated earlier, I'll pick one that'll help round out the party. As far as I know Helva, no ones claimed cleric yet so it's yours. PX has mentioned to me that she would like to be a monk.

Thursday is good to get together and try again.
If there are going to be more than two of us trying this time, we need to come up with a way to communicate with each other while we set it up. Been doing it over the phone. Also having a problem with starting a multiplayer game that can be found and joined by all. Any thoughts?

You can take your character from NWN into HotU, but it will be too powerful. HotU is designed for a character starting between 12 -15th level.

Sounds like we have a nice party shaping up. A RDD, a Monk, a Fighter, a cleric/weapons master and a Druid.

Sunday nights after 8 is a good time for me, actually any night after 8 is good for me, either that or the weekends are open.

Hmmm as for playing multiplayer, my Sweet Faboo and I did it a few times on our LAN here and I remember it being a pain in the tukus each time we tried it. I think it helps if the DM machine is set up first. I'll try to remember to ask my Sweet Faboo what he remembers about it tonight and post any tips he may give me. :)

Helva, we're just going to be playing the NWN single-player game as multiplayer. Not everyone has the expansion packs. I'm just going to let the others decide if they like the first game well enough to also purchase the expansion packs. I've already corrupted PX by turning her into a Gamer and blowing whole paychecks on buying games. Don't need anyone else to get addicted and have it on my conscience. :)
What all that means is the there won't be any prestige classes in the game. So you won't get to be a weapons master and I can't be a RDD. Of course, if the others really like NWN and do go get the expansion packs. But that's a 'wait and see'.

Gab and I played for a couple of hours on someone elses server. One problem I had was Gab and I kept getting seperated. My attention would be on something for a few seconds and Gab would wander off. I would then wander around on my own till I bumped into him again. We'll need to make an effort to keep an eye on each other so no one gets lost.

Yeah, it was fun. better than single player, but then it's always better when you have a friend along. Now if only PX would get 'game'.

Guess what I have? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Here's the thing, though. No random rolls for creating characters? You don't get such good stats this way -- the stats I rolled for all my guys in ToEE were much better. So, what does a monk need -- good strength, dexterity and wisdom? Anything I should really focus on here? I'm inclined to spend a couple of points on other stuff so I don't take penalties, or is that not a good use of my points? Does this game let you gain ability points?

Use the recommend button. This will configure your charactor's stats to fit their class and take advantage of any race bonus'. You can always customise your stats but the recommend feature does a good job of configuring your charactor optimally. I used it. The game does use D&D rules, so as you level up you get more stats to add and configure. I've been playing for the past couple of hours. If you want, we can find an empty server tomorrow (or even tonight) and play around a little.

Oh, no prestiege classes? Oh well, I forget all the feats I need for Weapons Master half the time anyway. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I just broke down and updated to 1.62 so I'm compatible.

When and where are we getting together for this? Are we starting as first level characters?

If you check your map your allies should show up as colored pins so you should be able to find eachother unless someone goes through a doorway whilst you are otherwise distracted.

One thing I remember from when my Sweet Faboo and I played was that it always took a moment or two for both of us to show up when going through doorways or the like.

The OC for NWN is great too. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I've had a lot of fun with it.

A little warning Princess , the Monk is kind fun to play , but it about the weakess class in the game , IMHO . They don't really come into their own untill high levels , if then .

But that is my only my personal opinion . http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Some enjoy playing them . Hope that you do too .

I played a monk once. It was fun once I got to the higher levels, but that can be true of any class so don't let that deter you. Monks are tough at the high levels and you never have to worry about dropping your weapon. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif The most important thing is to have fun. If you like your character than you will enjoy the game. Besides, you will have the rest of us to help you too. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif And we will have you to help us.

You guys -- help me! I am so bad at this game http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif! Ron and I messed around with it for a couple of hours today and I kept getting killed all over the place http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif. I don't want to be useless. I could use a few pointers. I like the idea of being a monk, but I like the idea of not getting killed all the time better http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

kreeden, Helva, I have already told PX everything the two of you just did about playing a monk. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

PX kept getting killed today because when I said "Run!" she would run towards the mob of bad guys, not away. She runs like a girl too. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif Seriously though, she did fine. it's just a new and differnt game that she has to get used to the controls of. That's all.
Helva, it may be ok to use higher level prestige and epic classes in our game. I'm still learning about it's multiplayer features. We still have not been able to create our own game. We've been using someone else's servers so far. The problem there is that we fall victum to other people disrupting our game and killing us. Gab and I had that problem Thuesday night as well as PX and I today. These player killers are always high level charactors that we don't stand a chance with. It's very annoying.

In the single-player game I'm playing, my charactor just reached tenth level of the Red Dragon Disciple prestige class and sprouted wings. Can't fly but looks very cool. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

What do you need for a server? I thought anyone wiht the OC could serve as host. If you like you could always load your RDD to protect the other players while they get used to the format and interface. I would be happy to load up my Cleric/Fighter/Weapons Master. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif If space is the issue maybe I could host, I've got a lot of unused space on my HD here at home.

Oh and about that Monk. At the lower levels I'd keep some good healing potions loaded up in my quick bar. High Dex is going to be critical and a high Con wouldn't hurt either. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Helva, we can each start a host game (server), and it will show up on the Gamespy server listings. But everytime the other player tries to connect to the game it says server times out. We can create a server, see the server, make the initial connection to server, but always times out. I can even start a stand alone server game, then start up NWN normally and go find my server game in the internet listings but it won't let me connect, times out. It's my own game on my computer and I can't connect. I believe it's because all of us who have tried so far are behind routers. We're missing a step somewhere that will allow the others to find our game beind the router. I going to look into that angle today.
